tOSU Recruiting Discussion

So, to someone who doesn't follow recruiting as closely, what gives? 3 years of top recruiting classes, and we are stuck with DL recruits that can't make it in their unit + guys Urban doesn't offer?

Why?

Warriner is a heckuva coach it seems, so what's the deal?

He is a heckuva coach. Problem is, from various accounts I've read, that he's not the best recruiter. Just doesn't seem to click with guys as much as other position coaches on the OSU staff.

They've recruited well everywhere except OL. So much depth on the D-line that guys are finding it easier to see the field on offense.

No doubt OL recruiting has been lacking.....

2012 - Decker (+), Dodson (-), O'Connor (gone), Elflein (TBD), Boren (TBD). I'll give them a pass, as they were just trying to fill a class in a short amount of time.
2013 - Lisle (TBD), Gardner (gone)
2014 - J Jones (TBD), M Jones (TBD), Knox (TBD), Taylor (TBD), Trout (TBD)
2015 - Feder & Schmidt

The verdict is still out on Elflein & Boren, IMO. Neither has been all that impressive thus far, but with limited action, I'll hold off on judgement. Dodson has been a big let down....kid seemed to have all the tools coming out of high school, but just hasn't put it together. I have high hopes for Lisle, Jamarco, Knox & Trout and if Marcelys can put it all together, that would be a big plus.

Feder is a project IMO right now. Obviously the frame is there, but limited Oline experience. I honestly haven't seen much of Schmidt yet to have an opinion on him. Landing Burrell & Richmond (supposed to commit soon & still take visits. I don't expect it to be OSU when he commits originally) would be huge. I hope they also keep the heat on Isaiah Prince.

Good post.

I hate to say it, but agree on Dodson. Problem is, I never even hear his name mentioned by the staff, by reporters when practice is open, etc. Nothing.

One issue with Boren is that, as hard as it is to believe, he's two games into his junior year already, and he hasn't played a whole lot. He's one of those guys who, unfortunately for his college career, is too good to be redshirted but not quite good enough to get meaningful playing time and experience in his first two years. Then you blink, and he's halfway through his junior year and he's struggling a bit, in part due to lack of experience.

That is an interesting point on Boren. I also find it interesting in light of Meyer's recent recruiting comments where he stated that they would "recruit right past" some kids if they didn't excel pretty quickly. I don't doubt the veracity of Meyer's statements but we simply haven't been able to do this on the offensive line. Not sure why...

2013 is really what killed us. I think last year's class will be comparable to the guys we just graduated once they get some experience, it will just take time. I'm curious about Lisle though, he was pushing Baldwin at RT and then kinda disappeared it seems.

Agree 100% regarding 2013. Don't see how you can ever get away with only taking 2 OL....especially with the project that Gardner was.

Believe I read somewhere that Lisle is injured, but don't quote me on that.

I think everyone was very concerned after 2013 wrapped up for many reasons regarding the OL...Lisle was a great pickup but I honestly never saw Gardner being a contributor here. Bummer on Lisle, I was hoping we could try him out at one of the guard spots. If anyone can get blood out of a turnip, it is Warriner but he can only do so much with the cards he's been dealt. It will be interesting to see if Knox or one of the Jones' get a look.

Agree, but I wish we were hearing more about him being more proactive about dealing the cards. Take that with a grain of salt though obviously, because I certainly have no clue what he does or does not do on the recruiting trail. I just don't hear much about Ed Warriner "the amazing recruiter".

It would be nice to see the staff follow up the nice 2014 OL class with another good haul in 2015. I certainly don't think it's outside the realm of possibility yet.

Did anyone notice in his presser regarding the loss impacting recruiting when Urb said something along the lines of "maybe they saw some opportunity" with a slight grin? Have to think he was talking to Burrell there.
