tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Question for the members of the BPRT. I was wondering if one of you guys could explain why over the years we have had problems recruiting premier DTs. I know that maybe we get maybe one really good guy every year but if that guy leaves early or gets hurt that really hurts our defense. I guess everyone can make fun of Saban all they want but the one thing that he can do is recruit quality DTs.

I also wonder what you guys think about the MSU debacle and how much it will hurt recruiting if any. I have read what Urban has said but I guess I would just like to hear your take. Thanks:bow:

DTs are the rarest commodity in recruiting.
DTs are an even rare commodity up north.
DT is the realm of grown freaking men, and not somewhere you want to deploy a freshman, meaning it usually takes years for a recruit to be effective.
The South is full of jucos and the SEC thrives on this. Bama and others frequently bring in grown men who went to jucos to get their stuff together off the football field.

That said, OSU needs to recruit better. It's okay to miss on national recruits like Beckner but they shouldn't have lost battles for guys like Cage (the older one). Fortunately DT recruiting seems to be trending upwards in 2016 and beyond.

As for the fallout against MSU, recruits aren't as fickle as fans. OSU will be fine. The probable removal from the CFP will keep them from being the premiere dynasty in college football but they'll still be right up there. Frankly, I think this effects MSU much more than OSU, as it proves for the millionth time that they aren't going away (despite constant declarations of their death, largely by UM fans). I think MSU will continue to solidify itself as a strong power and continue to become a more legitimate threat in midwest recruiting battles. They were already doing this in the last year or so and this outcome will only continue that trend.

Well, heck. Didn't someone at the Ohio State U. cryogenics lab take some DNA from Big Daddy Wilkenson (sp) and clone him? By now, he should have grown into DT size, so unthaw and put him in scarlet & gray. Otherwise, tOSU D will be a doughtnut team (nothing in the middle). Seriously, agree with what everyone is saying, except MSU, UM, even Penn St and Illinois seems to have someone that eats blockers....sounds like I'm saying our DTs are dogmeat, which I am not. Simply not elite compared to tOSU's corners, DEs, etc. Go Bucks. Pound the Wolverweenies. All in.

My question is with our recent misses on big fellas, why not use our cache on the JUCO circuit to further expand our chances. It couldn't hurt, I know a school like East Mississippi C.C. has bigs galore. Just a thought.

Its just very very hard to pull those kids from the south like @jwinslow stated.

I think Urban hasn't lacked for trying to get elite DTs, but many prefer to stay close to home in the south. And some we've just whiffed on. But another thing to think about, is what type of DT do you go after to fit your system. Saban prefers big space eaters, that yes will stop the run, but will tend to get winded as games progress and can find themselves in hard situations looking for air in close games, and that's what we saw in the Sugar Bowl last year. Urban and LJsr seem to be pursuing either big guys that can get lean and remain athletic(usually former wrestlers: Schutt, Hill, Bennett) or former HS DEs(or other positions)that can put on weight and also play inside(Washington, Cornell, Thompson, Sprinkle, Hubbard). The type of guys that play OSU brand of DT need to rush gaps and make plays in the backfield, not hold position at the line all that well. Our D line is set to counter spread teams that are taking over CFB, and keep the pressure on teams when were playing with the lead and forcing them to throw which fits into the trap of our stellar DBs and athletic LBs. Both sets have pros and con's, and this is how I have seen the DTs the past few years. Time will tell what happens to the DT position as guys like Munger, Hill, Landers, etc have to be thrust into action as Schutt, Hale and Washington move on. Its funny how when Tress was here people complained about the lack of athleticism on the D line and marveled at how the Meyer led Gators made Troy Smith a sitting duck, and we saw the same defense led by Meyer do the same to Alabama and Oregon last year. But the kryptonite to this D line will continue to be a team that can impose its will and control clock. And that's exactly what MSU did well enough on Saturday.

old timers always said most of the NCAA rule book was written for Bear Bryant. Now Saban gets his rule.

Must be a Bama thing
Not just old timers have said that. In the biography named: Bear, he describes how sketchy his recruiting practices were. The ol Bear was even under sanctions at aTm.

Remember when MI used to beat us every year and we would be 10 and 0 or 9 and 1...and they would get the top one or two kids in Ohio...a la Woodson and others...well that sucked. This game, beyond everything else, is the start of a new era. Lets make sure that foot is firmly pressing on that Wolverine neck. Its going to be tough. That stadium is going to feel line 100,000 are standing on your shoulders. Play sound and find a way. You have to really want this one.
