tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Agreed. The elite guy finds a way to win that one.

All joking aside, as a guy who came up on OSU football in the 80's and got a face full of late Earl then full frontal Cooper, the JT to Urban transition feels like stealing.
Think about us old timers who had to endure "The Greatest Upset of All Time" in 1969...

EDIT: Sorry...forgot I was in the recruiting forum. Thanks to the mod who edited my faux pas...

Not according to rivals. They really don't like our cruits
I'm sure ESPN feels even less impressed by the Buckeyes...

And the sole 3-star just happens to be the #1 prospect in the country at his position.

The fact that we could have upwards of seven 5-stars and a mind-boggling 16 in the top 100 is simply :slappy:
So true! It's unfathomable to think on paper how amazing this class can be. And how this could possibly start something pretty epic for OSU football(more so than what Urban has currently done)

Actually ESPN has our class rated well above everyone else, even bama who has one more commit. They also have the guys leaning toward us really high. They are similar to the scout and 247 rankings. Rivals just doesn't like our guys much, and doesn't like the guys leaning towards us now.

On the flip side, while we congratulate ourselves, Saban's right behind us.
IMHO, Saban has had the best recruits hands down for the last 5-6 years. Great coach, but when he wins national titles he does it by having better players. The years he didn't win it, he still had more better players than every team he played, and lost enough not to win it. He was an onside kick away from losing to Clemson, who recruits 2-4 top 100 players a year, when most of the Bama starters were top 100 players in HS. I can't imagine what would happen if a better coach (Whom I could think of 6-7, urban and Dabo included) with the same level of recruits as Sabah played him.... Saban would get rocked. Urban had one great class of sophomores playing against 4 straight no 1 recruiting classes and he won a game that we had comfortable lead in most of the second half. No, I don't worry about Saban. At this point he still has higher ranked recruits and I would feel fine playing them week 1. OMG if urban actually gets one or two better or equal classes I don't think they game would be close.

I agree. But also want to add an intangible aspect that seems to be a difference in Saban and Urban. The Bama players seem a little more entitled than OSU's players. Both have rabid fan bases, urban and his coaches keep the kids as humble as they can(last year was a difficult one to do that), where as Bams seems to embrace their stardom and expect NFL success and riches. I dare to say that the rookies that OSU just put in the NFL will have solid careers, as opposed to the large number if busts coming out of Tuscaloosa. Heck, look at the number of Buckeyes in the Super Bowl!

Agreed! I was talking to 2 kids who are Buckeye fans and both are in their early 20s, and they didn't get when I talked to them about worrying about The Game every year. To them, The Game was a big rivalry, but they're used to constantly winning it. I had to explain to them the frustrations of the Cooper years

Insert snarky comment about entitled millennials here.....

I agree that Saban has a little bit of John Cooper in him, in that he has to have massive talent advantage to win.

Disagree that he's had that for the past 5-6 years. I don't think there is any doubt OSU had the better talent in '14 and '15 (should they have met).

The Buckeyes Have Become Quarterback U

BarrettCatchSnap.jpg

Ohio State has never been a program that produces great quarterbacks. Throughout college football history, the Buckeyes were known offensively for the team’s rushing attack and rarely for the downfield throw.

Over the course of OSU’s 126-year history, there have certainly been exceptions to that rule. Mike Tomczak, Rex Kern, Art Schlichter, Bobby Hoying, and Joe Germaine all come to mind as Scarlet and Gray quarterbacks of the past, but there is no consistent chronology of great Buckeye signal callers.

Despite his reputation, Jim Tressel attempted to change this perception. Tressel went after some of the best quarterback recruits in the country, but often failed to bring them to Columbus. The Vest did end up molding Craig Krenzel into a national champion and Troy Smith into a Heisman Trophy winner while also landing the commitment of Terrelle Pryor, but most of Tressel’s teams were built on good defense and a strong running game.

When Urban Meyer took over as Ohio State’s head coach before the 2012 season, things changed. Meyer’s offense was geared towards the quarterback, and he had already coached a No. 1-overall pick in the NFL Draft (Alex Smith) and a Heisman winner and record setter (Tim Tebow).

Meyer inherited Braxton Miller – a Tressel recruit – and helped turn him into a dangerous weapon behind center before two shoulder injuries forced a position change. He won a national championship on the arm of a third-string quarterback, who some believed would never see the field at Ohio State.

Four years into Meyer’s tenure with the Buckeyes – and two NFL selections of his former OSU quarterbacks later – and the Scarlet and Gray have quickly become a quarterback school.

Danny Clark, the 15th-ranked pro-style quarterback in the 2017 class, has been committed to the Buckeyes since December of 2013 and has not wavered. Clark is another prototype player, standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 223 pounds out of Archbishop Hoban.

Add the recent commit of Tate Martell out of Las Vegas – the No.1 dual threat quarterback in the country – and OSU has two of the top signal callers in the class of 2017 on their way to Columbus next summer.

Well, I certainly arose from the desert to some exciting news. Great time to be a Buckeye.
