tOSU Recruiting Discussion

11W Article on Scout releasing their top 300.

edit: Might it be possible to rename this thread as the 2017 tOSU Recruiting Discussion to be consistent with the other recruiting class' discussions please? I remembered there was a 2017 thread, but had a really tough time finding this thread due to it's inconsistent naming.

2017 is to wide receivers as 2016 is to defensive ends. It is almost unfair the amount of talent Ohio State is going to haul in. Some other schools are going to get some elite players that Ohio State will have to turn away.
You should definitely include DB's along with WR's. CB/S with high OSU interest include Holmes, Pryor, Wade, Okudah, Ford, LeCounte, Gibbs and Wilson, with Wade and Williamson already on board. WR/ATH with interest are Grimes, Peoples-Jones, Thomas, Greene, Johnson, Harris, Ajian (no offer), with Judson already on board. Would like to see if OSU can get some interest from Bruce again although he's been committed to Miami for awhile we have a lot of influence around Bruce. Bruce is electric. I see grimes and jones as definite takes and one of thomas, Greene or Bruce for the last spot of 4 recievers. Don't know if we'll take 4 but maybe in a situation where it's too hard to turn the 4th guy away. Skill position is looking pretty good right now, we have some serious momentum.

Also Keyshawn Jr. is a very real possibility...I always forget him for some reason. I see Grimes as being in sooner rather than later. So with Grimes and Judson, I would assume two open spots after them and it will be very interesting to see who is in. Greene definitely wants in and I'm not sure if the staff is slow playing that to see what the rest are doing. Either way, it is going to be a killer WR class...quite likely the best we have had on paper.

Obviously there is a long way to go before the 2017 Class is finalized but I decided to take a crack at this. The number of commits comes out to 22 but it seems like every year OSU finishes with a higher amount, so we will see. I think there will be two running backs in this class and Sermon is a good one and seems very interested in OSU. While it would not shock me to see more than 3 receivers taken, I feel these three are the most likely. There is always at least one tight end in Meyer's classes and Dotson is the one they have offered so far. I believe that one more O-lineman will be taken and Hudson is the most likely, even though he has yet to receive an offer. D-line is a crap-shoot besides Cage at this point in time. I doubt that the coaching staff only takes one linebacker two classes in a row and will move Pryor over and continue to recruit Marchol out of Colorado. This DB class is unreal and there are countless names that the staff can choose from, and it seems that all of them are heavy leans to Ohio State.

Overall, I think this is a very realistic looking class, and maybe even underselling what it might become. If this is indeed how the class finishes out (it wont) according to 247sports Composite Ratings it would finish with 10 players in the top 100, 19 in the top 300, a average star rating of 4.00 and a composite rating of .9416. And remember, this is the toned down version of predictions for this class. The future is indeed bright...

I do not know that much about these guys but one thing that I think is that if Johnson Jr. wants in the 2017 class Meyer will find some way to fit him in and it might be because he is Johnson Jr. and maybe not.

I find the difference between Paris Ford and Lamont Wade interesting. One seems like a "choke you over a game of checkers" guy and the other does not.

“I don’t go out and recruit a certain player,” Meyer says. “I recruit the best player, and competitive nature, his desire to win, is without question the most important thing. I used to be into, ‘Is he a three-quarter [throwing motion]? Does he have four fingers on the laces or five?’ I don’t care anymore.

“Will he choke you to win a checker game? If he does that, I’ll take him.”

It just goes to show that some guys, no matter how talented, just aren't meant for Urban Meyer's style at OSU... and I don't think that's a bad thing at all.

From the 11W article:

Nevermind that literally anything can happen in recruiting these days....
Also never mind that over 30% of all signees bust out completely due to injury, academics, transfers, criminality, conduct detrimental to the team, etc., and another 20% do little or nothing during their time at Ohio State. So there's a 50% chance that the kid you're competing against will take himself out of the equation due to his own misconduct, lack of talent, or plain bad luck.

Kids who don't want to compete won't have to compete - they'll get passed over early and often. Regardless of where they end up.

IMO part of Meyer's special magic is his ability to select/develop kids with a greater than 50% chance of contributing.

But the point stands nonetheless.

At the same time, the only QB from 2014 that strikes me as having that attitude is Braxton Miller -- who technically wasn't an Urban recruit (though safe to assume Urban would've recruited him).
I can't see JT, Cardale, or Collier choking anyone over checkers. JT is calm and poised, Cardale would be cracking jokes, and not sure how I'd peg Collier... but can't see choking.

Yeah, Cardale only beats patients in childrens hospitals at NCAA Football 98-35.

Oh they'll all compete and put their foot on the pedal** ... I just don't get that "become violent over a board game" vibe from any of them except Braxton. I don't even get it from Meyer... after a big loss he eats pizza alone on the golf cart, and that's a perfectly rational response AFAIC (I mean, it's not like he's eating grass off the field).
I'm guessing Vrabel was the one that put a hole in the whiteboard.

**I can't really comment on Collier yet I guess?

I think you're taking that example a little too literally. I don't think Meyer actually expects his players to get violent over board games... I think it's more along the lines of a guy who never hesitates to compete at his highest level regardless of the circumstances.

My wording was kind of literal, but I don't think Braxton would actually choke somebody over checkers... or that Urban was looking for a FSU player.
Braxton does have that "get angry" vibe when he competes, and that's what I take from the quote. Controlled aggression.
I guess I'm saying there's different approaches to competition and they can all be effective. Urban doesn't want any Hoke BBQ recruits ... but he'll recruit a kid like JT that competes in a cool-headed fashion. Cardale also wasn't technically a Urban recruit (though he did honor promises from previous regime), but I think Urban would recruit a kid that takes his approach as well. Especially after seeing, and being surprised by, Cardale's diligent prep and work in the last 3 games.
