Drew Rosenhaus: Brian Hartline wants to return to Miami Dolphins, but serious negotiations haven?t started yet

Four-year receiver Brian Hartline, an impending free agent, has maintained since the end of the regular season that he hopes to be back in a Dolphins uniform next year with a long-term contract extension.

But despite a recent report that the Dolphins are working hard to lock up Hartline and fellow Drew Rosenhaus client Chris Clemons before free agency begins on March 12, Rosenhaus said Thursday on his weekly appearance on 560-AM that Hartline and the Dolphins aren?t really that close on an extension right now, though there is ?a mutual interest in both sides.?

Rosenhaus explained that much of the groundwork for contract extensions and free agency is done next week at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, and that serious negotiating usually doesn?t take place now, with four weeks still to go until free agency begins.

?Of course, everybody ? Brian, the Dolphins ? everyone would like to get a deal done before free agency, and that the end of the day that is still a possibility,? Rosenhaus said on The Joe Rose Show. ?But I can honestly say that this is the time of the year where this is the quiet before the storm in terms of negotiations. I believe that teams wait until much closer to the start of free agency before they negotiate in earnest.?

On Hartline, the sides continue to talk. Agent Drew Rosenhaus is nothing if not persistent. Hartline wants to remain in Miami and believes he has a chemistry with quarterback Ryan Tannehill. But he also wants $6 million per season.

Obviously, the Dolphins have so far resisted this price point. Both sides at this point believe something can get done before the start of free agency.

It is possible the Dolphins might decide pay $8 million for another, more accomplished wide receiver such as Greg Jennings is better than paying $6 million to Hartline. The Dolphins are almost certain to chase Mike Wallace as their top free agency target, as well.

Call me crazy, but I just don't see Hartline as worth $6 million yet. I loved his production on an awful Dolphins team, but 1 year does not make the contract. He's a good WR but I don't see him as a #1 which I think caps his value between $4-6 million. Until (or unless) he develops a knack for reaching the endzone, I think he is in only in the middle of that range in value.

Plus, I'd love for him to get out of Miami and onto an actual team.

His contract should be incentive laden to even come close to 6mil. He has great potential and he's super reliable but he doesnt stretch the defense enough to demand #1 type money. If the Dolphins sign Jared Cook as a TE who can stretch the defense then Hartline will definitely improve his stock this year.

The Miami Dolphins are close to finalizing a deal with one of their own top free agents.

A source told FOXSports.com that Brian Hartline and the Dolphins are nearing agreement on a contract that would keep the wide receiver from hitting the free-agent market. The multiyear deal would average between $6 million and $6.5 million a season, the source said.

Hartline?s agent Drew Rosenhaus was unavailable for immediate comment.

A 2009 fourth-round draft pick from Ohio State, Hartline is coming off his best NFL season. He had 74 catches for 1,083 yards and one touchdown in 2012.

If the deal cannot be finalized, the 26-year-old Hartline would be attractive in a free-agent class lacking depth at wide receiver behind Pittsburgh?s Mike Wallace and Green Bay?s Greg Jennings. Hartline, though, is believed to want to stay with the Dolphins.

At roughly $38 million under the salary cap, the receiver-starved Dolphins could sign Hartline and still make a run at Wallace or Jennings when the free-agent signing period begins March 12.

Rosenhaus can begin negotiating with other teams Saturday if a deal with the Dolphins isn?t completed by Friday night.

When Brian Hartline left Ohio State with a year of eligibility left, some thought the GlenOak High School graduate was making a mistake.

Hartline was confident he was ready to play the NFL game.

That was 2008, and Hartline had played just three seasons at Ohio State because he redshirted as a freshman in 2005.

But Hartline was on pace to graduate with a degree in 2009, and he did ? three months after being selected by Miami in the fourth round of the NFL Draft.

Hartline?s production dropped off at Ohio State in his final season, but that was more circumstances than anything. He averaged 13.3 yards a catch as a redshirt sophomore when he caught 52 passes for 694 yards. In his final season, though, he caught just 21 passes for 479 yards and a 22.8 per-catch average.

That?s because Brian Robiskie became the favored target.

But Hartline played every game as a rookie. The Dolphins continued to find the right mix. They may have found it last season with Hartline and rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill.

Hartline capitalized on his career year when Miami signed him to a five-year extension worth about $31 million, according to his agent Drew Rosenhaus. The new contract includes $12.5 million guaranteed.

Miami had until Tuesday to re-sign Hartline or he would have become an unrestricted free agent. He caught a team-high 74 passes for 1,083 yards last season.

It is a good deal for both the team and Hartline. It shows Hartline respect. It also keeps chemistry in the huddle that was clearly developed between Hartline and Tannehill last year.

It shows that Hartline knew what many others didn?t know about him coming out of college. He had the confidence in himself to know he could make the move. The fact that he graduated the same year as being drafted shows he was mature enough to handle the move.

WHY IT WAS RIGHT

Hartline will have made more than $20 million in the NFL, and possibly closer to $40, if he maxes out this contract. That?s a lot more money than his communications degree would have made him over a lifetime. He would have to make $120,000 a year for 167 years to exceed $20 million in the ?real world.?
