WR Chris Fields (official thread)

Watch for Nebraska to mimic Illinois' efforts in Ohio with Pellini. Not only is he from Y-town and probably desperate to make an impact.... but also coming from LSU, another school that hands out offers like candy....

Today, Tressel will be at Harvey to visit with junior receiver Chris Fields. Fields is one of the top juniors in the state and could be offered a scholarship with the Buckeyes in the near future.
Last week, Fields was offered a scholarship to play football at the University of Illinois. Fields said Illini coach Ron Zook was a visitor at Harvey on Tuesday, and Penn State assistant coach Jay Paterno also was at Harvey this week.

The Zooker's strategy seems to be offering the Ohio Kids their Junior years, trying to get an advantage by being the first to offer. (Turner, Fellows, Fields, Marcus Hall et. al)

On a side note, TSUN's DC is from Painseville I think. Wonder if they'll try to use that angle to make a connection with Chris

That "angle" won't work. Painesville Harvey and Painesville Riverside are "worlds" apart albeit only about 2 miles from one another.

I've known TSUN's DC Scott Shafer since he was 14 years old. I coached baseball with him and coached his younger brother. His dad, Ron Shafer was our High School Coach and one of the coolest people you'd ever want to meet. And, although he downplays it, Scott was raised a Buckeye fan.

With all that nonsense being said, It's still the firm feelling here in the 'Ville" that an offer is all it will take. Maybe that "offer" happened today, but I think Coach is looking hard at the entire picture before it goes out. Couple that with the fact that Chris' Coach Devlin Culliver is A Youngstown guy and I think that adds up to Coach Tressel having this kid if he wants him. Of course, I have no "official" sources, but bank on it that once the grades are all in order, that Chris will be a Buckeye. Speculation of course, but I feel pretty solid on this one.

Peace.

Touted recruit lures coaches (and spotlight) to Harvey

These are heady times at Harvey High.
Not since Painesville legend John Mummey went on to play at Ohio State in the early 1960s has such a stir been caused. Illinois football coach Ron Zook and Penn State assistant coach Jay Paterno visited Harvey on Tuesday, and Ohio State coach Jim Tressel came in first thing Wednesday morning.
All three -- and many others -- are after Chris Fields (6-1, 180), who is the top-ranked junior wide receiver in Ohio and the 81st-ranked player in the nation over all, according to ri vals.com. None was permitted by NCAA rules to talk to Fields, but each made his presence known while in the building.

Hope this kid gets the scholarship offer. Having an actual elite receiver with speed can be big, like Terry Glenn big. No knock to Ginn or Robo, but I feel Santonio and Gonzo were the best combination of speed and the tools to be a all american at WR. Hopefully we can get him the ball enough to put up the stats Glenn got.

Another location factor that may help is that Mentor and Painesville are not far from each other and we all know who grew up in Mentor.:)
