MASSILLON ?

There were a lot of individuals excited when Urban Meyer was named the new head football coach at Ohio State. Few may have been more excited than Buckeye freshman Devin Smith.

Smith, the former Massillon standout, saw plenty of action in his first season in Columbus this past fall. However, as a wide receiver in what was statistically one of the worst passing offenses in Division I, there were plenty of moments of frustration as well as Ohio State struggled with consistent passing success.

More than a few people expect that to be different once Meyer gets settled in and establishes the spread offense he made so successful at Bowling Green, Utah and Florida, where he won a pair of national championships. One of those people is Smith.

?Everyone?s excited,? Smith said while in Massillon this week. ?They?re excited, because he has an explosive offense. He throws the ball a lot. We?re going to balance the offense out a lot next year. We?re all excited for that.?

Meyer was officially named Ohio State?s coach Nov. 28. Prior to his introductory press conference, he spoke with the players and immediately tried to set the tone for his expectations out of the Buckeyes.

Smith was taken in by the words his new head coach had to say. And more than a few resonated with him immediately.

?The one thing that stood out for me the most is that he said he?s going to give it his all every single day to us,? Smith said. ?He wants us to give it back. I think right there, that little quote he said, really stood out to me. I think everyone is going to take advantage of that opportunity with him coaching, and we?re going to give it our all to him.?

I think Devin is in for a big year next year.

He should've definitely played more than he did this past season (Although he did end up as our leading receiver regardless), and I think he's definitely primed to show out this spring and fall to cement his place near the top of the depth chart.

I think everyone will start at 0 next year so spring and fall practices will mean more than they have in years..Urban is not married to any of the returness save Braxton, so production not reputation is going to be the buzz word.

the freshman who tied for the OSU lead with 14 catches..:shake:

Him and every other possible player that has a chance at catching a ball next year have got to be foaming at the mouth.

A year ago as Ohio State?s offense struggled to find an identity, Devin Smith was making a mark. That?s the good news for the Massillon graduate.

The bad?

New head coach Urban Meyer isn?t all that impressed with the mark Smith made in 2011.

Smith and Corey Brown tied for the team lead with 14 receptions last year. That isn?t a lot of catches to lead the team.

Meyer believes 14 receptions is a good game, not a great year. He has been vocal this spring about finding playmakers at receiver and has publicly chided his receivers for more production.

?With him being an ex-receivers coach, he?s tougher on us,? Smith said. ?He wants us to be good. Receivers are a big part of this offense. He?s pushing us to be the best.?

Smith caught 14 passes for 294 yards and scored four touchdowns. Tight end Jake Stoneburner also had 14 catches, half of those for touchdowns.

Meyer?s offense is more about tempo than anything else. It will be fast-break football, which is welcomed by Smith.

?This is a lot faster,? Smith said. ?Last year?s offense, it was fast at times, but it was a slow tempo. This is a fast-tempo offense, and everyone is making adjustments and getting acclimated to the whole system.

?The up-tempo will catch a lot of defenses off guard. They won?t be able to substitute as much as we?ll be able to make plays.

Under almost any other circumstances, a player who finished as his team's leading receiver would be ineligible for this list. But Ohio State's offense in 2011 defied precedent: Plagued by key suspensions and eventually stuck with a true freshman quarterback aiming at a bunch of freshman and sophomore targets, the Buckeyes spent most of the season just trying to get the passing game off the runway. Smith wound up at the top of the stat sheet mainly by default; he was one of only two receivers who saw the field in all 13 games, despite coming off the bench in every one of them. His dramatic turn in the midseason win over Wisconsin notwithstanding, Smith's output (14 receptions for 294 yards) marked the lowest team-leading totals in the nation this side of Army.

Chalk it up to growing pains. By the end of the year, fellow freshman Braxton Miller was only beginning to discover his arm; by the end of spring practice, Smith was first in lineto ensure it will be put to good use.
