WR Evan Spencer (BIG Champion, National Champion)

man, do we have some playmakers at receiver all of a sudden or what?

to me, evan spencer is the most natural WR of the bunch and seemed to be Millers favorite deep ball target on a few drives...if the throws wouldn't have been ducks, he could have had close to 100 yards on a few catches...he is the guy to watch...at the end of the season, evan spencer will be the teams leading receiver...he was about a foot away from a touchdown on this jump ball

Can't remember which game it was, but early last season, Evan had an amazing one handed grab down the sideline. I'm not sure if he'll be the leading receiver this season, but I do believe that this group of WRs will get lots of chances to be playmakers. They might not be superstars but I like the potential of these guys. :osu:

It really is eerily similar to Florida's offense under Meyer. They never had a great receiver but they were great role players. Harvin was a hybrid and they had some good tight ends.

The only difference is we don't have the Harvin player yet and our running backs are better, imo. We shall see how it all pans out but the young guys are definitely stepping up.

Family ties run deep for OSU's Spencer
Posted: Tuesday, October 30, 2012
By Jim Naveau

COLUMBUS ? Evan Spencer has been around Ohio State football longer than his teammates, almost as long as he has been alive.

His dad, Tim, was a star running back for the Buckeyes in the early 1980s, then was an OSU assistant coach from 1994-2003. His parents met at Ohio State. His first appearance in an OSU football media guide was as a 1-year-old, sitting on his mom?s lap in a family photo.

Spencer, a sophomore wide receiver, matched his personal season-high with three catches in Ohio State?s 35-23 win over Penn State last Saturday and had two catches against Purdue.

Before that, he had not had a catch in four games after pulling in five in the first three games.

?I?ve been around the Buckeyes my whole life. Probably my best memory is the national championship, being able to be out on the field with my dad, my mom, my brother,? Spencer said. ?To this day, I still get chills thinking about it.?

Tim Spencer, who played five years in the NFL, has been a Chicago Bears assistant coach since 2004.

?I try to talk to him every day, especially after games,? Evan Spencer said. ?After he gives me his criticism on my games, I?ll watch the Bears games and give him criticism on what they did wrong. So it?s a two-way street.

?It means so much, it helps me so much on a day-to-day basis, whenever I?m going through something, calling him and having him be there for me and help me through stuff. And my mom, as well,? he said.

Spring Spotlight: Evan Spencer
Q&A with the junior WR

8254546.jpeg

April 10, 2013

Name: Evan Spencer
Class: Junior
Hometown: Vernon Hills, Ill.
High School: Vernon Hills
Position: WR

2012 Recap: Saw action in 12 games, averaging 11.3 yards per catch. Among Buckeye receivers, Spencer was fourth on the team with 12 catches for 136 yards.

2013 Outlook: Spencer will look to be more of an offensive weapon for the Buckeyes in their high-powered spread offense that aims to be one of the most dominant and explosive systems in the country.

Q: How would you compare this year?s spring practices to last year?
A: Last year, we thought we were playing fast and doing the right things. It?s a lot better this year that we have a year under our belt with the new offense and coming off a great season. Everyone is just flying around. We aren?t holding back this year now that we have everything down pat and we are all out there just going 100 miles an hour.

Q: How did the momentum of last year translate into your offseason routine?
A: It goes back to the work ethic throughout the offseason. [The receivers] want to prove that we can and will be a dominant force. Fundamentally and mentally, we have improved tremendously. Now that we are familiar with our assignments, we see so much better and are so much quicker. It?s all confidence once you?ve been with each other that long and with the success of last season, it?s hard not to have confidence in our skills.

Q: What did you focus on personally during this offseason?
A: I really focused on fundamentals, whether that be looking the ball in or running routes or making sure the DB can?t get his hands on me ? everything combined you need to do as a receiver to give yourself an edge over the defender to make plays.

Q: How do you see your role developing in this offense that has been praised for its depth and experience?
A: The more the better. We are striving to be the most dominant receiver group in the country. Point blank. Period. The more people we can add to create more depth and be more explosive and make more plays, I?m all for it. If you?re out there making plays, they?re going to reward you and let you play.

  • Coaches and teammates have raved about Evan Spencer’s improvement from last season, and the receiver is expected to play a major role in the offense this season. Spencer is the son of former Ohio State standout running back Tim Spencer, who ran for 3,553 yards and scored 36 touchdowns in his career, and later became a coach for the Buckeyes and in the NFL.

Q: Describe the level of anticipation you have for this season.

A: Personally, it’s tremendous. It’s awesome to have the preseason ranking we do, and it’s good to know that a lot of people expect a lot out of us. It’s pushing us and driving us to be better football players and better people.

Q: What has it been like to be Tim Spencer’s son? I’m sure there’s a lot of pride, but also it comes with expectations.

A: I kind of accepted that coming out of high school. Once I started getting recruited a lot, I knew people would ask me about it since my dad had such a good career here. I just took it as a competitive challenge. However many touchdowns he had, I was going to try to beat him. That’s my competitive side. You’re at a school you love. Let’s try to one-up him.
