WR Jalin Marshall (Edmonton Elks)

I love Jalin and all he has done for the program...but what the hell? He stood the most to gain by far, as he is still raw at the position and refining his game (which would include route running, coverage recognition, blocking, etc) would have increased his draft stock significantly, in addition to him likely being the focal point in our offense. I would honestly be pretty surprised if he was drafted. Of course I hope it works out for him but I do not understand this one at all.

Young man following his heart.

I am finding more and more that as I get older I relate a lot less to young people so I chalk it up to their learning path and just go on with my own. Kind of the 3 Year plan someone posted on here previously. Then I just say Go Bucks!!!

I'd say that Jalin is not close to Philly Brown and still has a lot of work to do. I don't think this was the best decision for him.
Fans like to think the only decision to be made is how high in the draft they'd go. That's not the case. It's easy to say this is a bad decision because you're working under the assumption that he could come back, not get injured, definitely improve his playing ability, and definitely improve where he gets drafted. It's very possible Jalin thinks he wouldn't get drafted much higher next year....so why wait?

Personally, I look at Devier Posey and his struggle for playing time in the NFL. I don't think Jalin is as good as Posey was in college. But playing another year doesn't guarantee he'd improve to the point where scouts elevate him up the draft. What does the WR crop look like this year vs next? What does he think Tim Beck's presence on the staff means for him being able to showcase his talent? Maybe we lose something like 5 games next year after all this turnover and his play gets overshadowed by our poor record. Maybe he just doesn't like doing the school + football + microscope thing.

Fully agreed! Too many fans assume coming back= draft stock increase. Not factoring in an injury, or that stats may decrease. Football players have limited snaps anyway, I rather him leave and make his money, then come back and possibly get injured not get a dime and end up back in Middletown with little but college memories and aches. Have aches in a bug house with money in your account. Kids play to get to Sundays, not Saturdays. And even if he didn't get his degree, I don't believe OSU is going anywhere, he can always come back... Nothing wrong with the 3 year plan, and it certainly will help with recruiting when multiple Buckeyes are selected.

Most of those are good points, but the risk of injury breaks both ways. Let's say he gets injured next year regardless.
NFL: cut... even more of an uphill battle to make a roster the next year
Ohio State: still picked up as a late draft pick

NFL: cut... even more of an uphill battle to make a roster the next year; and with a 6 figure check in rehab
Ohio State: possibly picked up as a late draft pick, and lucky to get a degree and possible insurance check

Jalin has taken some shots over the years. If he has his degree. Maybe he wants to try to get paid while he can and end on a good note. I want to see him in scarlet and grey next year too but I don't blame anyone for leaving early if they have a degree .

FWIW, degree should be by the time he leaves, which is by the draft time -ish. Not a hundred percent he finished this last semester. I asked that question but don't have an answer as of yet if he's completely done. Don't want anything I might have mentioned to misguide folks.
