WR/RB Lamaar "Flash" Thomas (transfer to New Mexico)

Lobos land four-star recruit from OSU

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Second-year Head Coach Mike Locksley has landed his first four-star recruit in his tenure with the Lobos.

Ohio State transfer Lamaar Thomas has verbally committed to New Mexico and will start classes at the university on Tuesday, as first reported by the Red Menace.

UNM's Spring Semester begins on Tuesday.

The receiver, nicknamed "Flash" for his speed, will have to sit out a year before he can compete per NCAA rules.

Thomas was the Buckeyes top kick returner last year. He may be used in the same capacity with the Lobos.

(KRQE) - Well the Lobos at least have a year to figure this one out as four-star transfer Lamaar Thomas will have to sit for a season per NCAA rules.

It's obvious he was either undervalued or not given a fair shake at Ohio State from his underwhelming numbers on the offensive side of the ball. He finished his career there with five catches, one run and zero trips to the end zone.

But it's kind of alarming to see that his kick return average is a tick short of 21 yards. Especially if you consider that Kasey Carrier's kick return average was 23.3 yards per attempt with a long of 49. Flash's long was only 33.

For those reasons, I don't foresee a huge impact on special teams. I think his real niche could be as a dual threat out of the backfield.

At 5-foot-11, he's not going to scare you all that much as a traditional receiver. But the guy has tremendous speed and could terrify defenses as run pass option out of the shotgun.

Former Buckeye runs while waiting
By Ryan Tomari | DAILY LOBO

About a month ago, Lamaar Thomas was on a football field in Pasadena, Calif., playing in the 2010 Rose Bowl on New Year?s Day.

Thomas? former school, Ohio State, had just defeated Oregon, 26-17.

Lamaar Thomas whirls down the track at the Albuquerque Convention Center on Saturday. Thomas, who transferred from Ohio State to play UNM football, is currently competing in track and field during the mandatory NCAA waiting period.

For the Buckeyes, it was their first victory in the Rose Bowl since 1997.

But for Thomas, the celebration was cut short.

The sophomore wide receiver left Columbus, Ohio, and has found a new home with the UNM football team.

Thomas ? who won?t put on a football helmet for UNM until 2011 because of NCAA transfer rules ? is able to compete with the UNM track and field team.

Even though he has yet to make his Lobo football debut, Thomas made a glossy debut on Saturday at the Albuquerque Convention Center during the New Mexico Classic.

And he certainly made the most of it.

Thomas ran a time of 6.94 in the 60-meter prelims, which was his first race as a Lobo, and he finished sixth in the finals with a mark of 6.89.

The 6.89 mark in the finals has already stamped Thomas in the Lobo track and field history book. His time in the 60-meter finals was good enough to cement his spot as the fifth best time among all UNM performers.

?I didn?t really get a chance to run track at Ohio State,? he said. ?I ran outdoor for maybe two weeks. I loved track in high school and it?s just something that I really wanted to get back into. Now I have the opportunity to do (that), and I enjoy getting back into the track group every day like I used to do.?

Thomas commits to UNM
Lobo football must wait for 'Flash'
Track team gets speed now
Updated: Tuesday, 06 Apr 2010

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - The New Mexico Lobos have a wide receiver in spring camp that won't be able to help them this upcoming season.

But the Lobos hope Ohio State transfer Lamaar Thomas will pay big dividends in 2011.

In 2009, Thomas was Ohio State's top kick returner with an average of 20.9 yards per attempt. His best was 33 yards.

But the six-foot, 185-pound Thomas wanted to do more than just return kicks. So he decided to transfer to New Mexico, where the Lobos plan on using his pass catching skills as well.

Because he transferred, Thomas can practice with the Lobos but can't play in 2010. Thomas is taking use his waiting to play as a positive.

"I get in and get to learn the offense, and then next year I can just get ready for the season and not worry about learning plays," Thomas said. "Getting into the open field it's hard to take me down with my speed. Just being able to cut gives me some real advantages with this offense."

?I Wasn?t Thinking,? Thomas Says of Tweet
By Rick Wright / Journal Columnist
Tuesday, 12 October 2010

When a football team is losing, everybody's a critic -- even Lamaar Thomas, the Lobos' prize transfer wide receiver from Ohio State.

Saturday, during the Lobos' 16-14 loss at New Mexico State, the UNM coaching staff inserted true freshman quarterback Stump Godfrey into the lineup. Godfrey had been expected to sit out the season as a redshirt.

Thomas, who also is redshirting this season, questioned the move on Twitter during the game.

"Can't believe they put Stomp in the game. Y waste the redshirt????" Thomas tweeted.

"I guess I wasn't thinking," Thomas said after Tuesday's UNM practice. "... Coach (Mike) Locksley pulled me aside before practice, and ... I'll start watching the things I say on Twitter and Facebook and any other public social networks."

Locksley said he has no plans to ban his players from using Twitter, as other coaches have done. "I hate to have rules that you can't enforce," he said. Of Thomas' comment regarding Godfrey, Locksley said he had reinforced with Thomas that "coaches coach and players play."

Eight minutes after his first comment, Thomas tweeted, "Go Stump!!!"
