All very good points. Given your hypothesis (Kaleb leaving after '19), I think you're right that a 4/5 (Hugley, Dainga, Loveday, etc) would be more important. But, I still believe we have a comparative weakness at the 2.
It seems as though Johnson and Sueing are being considered as either/or options at the wing. Johnson is regarded as a shooting guard (2) by all of the rating services, and Sueing is seen as a small forward (3), and possibly even a 4. So, it appears to me that the question is: whether to take a...
The '18 class (this year's freshmen) could be generally classified as Holtmann taking the best players available in a very shortened recruiting cycle. It would be like starting '20 recruiting in June/July of this year. Most of the top players had already established relationships with coaches...
In Amir Williams case, it seems unfathomable to me that in four years, they couldn't teach him to not bring the ball down below his waist to gather himself after an offensive rebound or inside pass. At worst, they could have taken him out of the game every time he did it. Or, they could have...
I've seen a couple of HS games in the last 2 months. In those games, Mitchell and Giddens were the 3rd or 4th best players on their teams. In fact, Mitchell has dropped out of the top 100. There was a comment on another thread mentioning how Harris got schooled by junior in a game the person...
I think Matta, as any good coach, can have a stubborn streak. It appears that this is the case with using the zone - he made the decision to go that route (with probably some very valid reasons), and doesn't want to admit it was the wrong decision.
It still amazes me that Amir Williams continues to bring the ball down to his waist or lower before he goes up for a shot. A perfect example of this was late in the half, when he got the offensive rebound at the zenith of his jump (among three Purdue players), and instead of just going right...
I've mentioned this before. But, it seems that Craft and Scott spent a lot of time on the court together last night. One non-shooting point guard at a time is plenty. It seems like this is a form of "Tressel ball" - "playing not to lose" - "prevent defense".
Couldn't agree more. It's bad enough to have a point guard that doesn't score - but two at the same time? I have a feeling Matta is being stubborn in this regard (to his own detriment).
I believe he was referring to the 20% graduation rate. I'm not sure if this number is accurate, but it's a different measure than you may be thinking of.
Palm & RPI
Palm has worked with the RPI since the early 90's and has since been considered the RPI expert. I've always considered it to be a very simplistic and flawed measurement, particularly with far more sophisticated systems out there (i.e. Sagarin, Pomeroy, Massey, etc.).
His mistake...
Williams hands
Just curious. Who is the big man coach?
I'm just a fan, but I have noticed several times that when Amir catches a pass or gets a rebound, he brings the ball down to his waist - and then, an opponent, often a guard, will knock the ball out of his hands. It seems to me that...
Rebounding
They just don't seem to be interested in it. Nobody seems to crash the boards. Is this a coaching issue, or just lack of hustle? White wants every rebound. Nobody on Ohio State seems to have that mindset. They only seem to get rebounds when the ball comes right to them.
Bad call on Turner
Did you notice that the ref that called the foul on Turner was at the same angle as the original camera shot - no way he could see it. The replay showed Turner had all ball.
Zone defense
It seems to me that their zone defense is working fairly well in the half court. UNC scored far fewer points than their average. The only time it has had problems was in the 2nd half of the TAM game (when TAM got a lot of confidence and made everything). The downside of employing a...
