'05 CA S/RB Shawn Oatis (UCLA signee)

I think you are right about Mike Stoops. Nobody plays defense on the west coast. If he bring a defense like what he had at Oklahoma, watch out. They will give USC fits. Look at what they did to FSU. A great defense will keep you any game, "defense wins championships" not offense.

Oatis still plans on making an official visit to South Bend and Columbus in October. Arizona will likely get an official as well and he really enjoyed the unofficial visit he took there. Oatis likes the tradition at Ohio State, the fact we won the NC a couple years ago and the fact Mike Doss was a 3 time AA at the position Oatis will likely play in college.

Arizona and tOSU are recruiting him the hardest.

The factors in his final decision include:
- education
- team record the last few years
- stability of program- not alot of coaches leaving
- early playing time (IMO-this is the only one that could hurt us)

Distance will not be a problem

JT, Stoops (AZ) and the Oregon St. coach stand out for him.

He is still going to tOSU on Oct. 22nd.

Oatis blurb from Irish Today

California S Shawn Oatis

Did Notre Dame's performance against BYU hurt them in their effort to land Oatis?

"I think it does," Oatis said. "Notre Dame has such tough alumni. You want to go to a program where you know the coach is going to be there. Coach Willingham will hopefully get a few more years, but if they don't win, he won't stick around for when I would be there. You look at those things and have to ask, 'Will this coaching staff be there in four years?' I have to take that into consideration."

Oatis also talks about when he'll make his official visit to Notre Dame, which other schools he'll trip to, what improvements he's made as a defensive back and much, much more.

Smart kid. Looks like more and more like we're going to go head to head with Arizona for Oatis. If Stoops wasn't there I would expect this to be a slam dunk for us. It will be interesting to see where we are on his list after he visits. I believe he's already been to Arizona this summer.

He still has his ND and tOSU visits planned for October and is working on adding official vists to Arizona and Oregon. Shawn may also add a fifth vist to either OU, UCLA or Oregon St.. He claims not to have a favorite.

He watched part of the NCST game on TV and said "it was a solid performance" and "Ohio State looked prepared".
