He said yesterday that he'd been unable to reach the required score on the SAT. "I'd been working on it and I'd been getting closer to it," he said, "but it didn't work out."

Instead of enrolling at College Park, he's headed to Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Va., where former Mount St. Joseph star and current Terrapin Keon Lattimore studied before going to Maryland.

Alaeze will be at Hargrave for one semester before going to a four-year college, "wherever it may be, but probably [at Maryland]."

With Shawne Merriman gone, Alaeze had the chance to help replace the No. 12 overall pick in this spring's NFL draft and play immediately this season. But he is less shaken by the prospect of waiting to start his college career than he was when he first got the news.

"At first, I was upset," he said. "But after that, I wasn't too concerned, because I was still going to go to school."

Alaeze to play
Melvin Alaeze, who originally signed with Maryland, is expected to get playing time tomorrow for Illinois in the team's game at Rutgers.
The former Randallstown defensive end wound up in Champaign in early August, barely six months since he had signed with the Terps and roughly six weeks after drug charges and SAT struggles derailed any hopes of playing in College Park.

After Maryland rescinded its scholarship offer to Alaeze on June 21, the 6-foot-3, 280-pound All-Metro player enrolled at Illinois, where former Maryland assistant coach Mike Locksley is offensive coordinator on Ron Zook's staff.

Alaeze was cleared Aug. 31 by the NCAA Clearinghouse to participate in the Illini's opener against Eastern Illinois, but he did not play.

"I know this is a second chance," Alaeze told the State Journal-Register of Springfield. "Illinois gave me an opportunity to show that I'm a better person. I won't let anyone down."

He was sentenced yesterday after pleading guilty in May to first-degree assault in Baltimore County Circuit Court in connection with a December incident in which a man was allegedly robbed and shot three times. Under state law, he must serve at least four years behind bars before he can be released.

^^^^ Good Post...It is sad seeing kids throw away these rare god given (or evolution) talents. I wish it was easy to get kids see how special and blessed they are to be in this moment and the huge opportunities being handed to them.

Former football star asks to drop plea, go to trial

A former Randallstown football star who was sentenced to eight years in prison after pleading guilty in 2007 to first-degree assault was back in court Thursday, saying he had been duped into making the plea by a "deficient" defense attorney ? Kevin B. Kamenetz, now a Baltimore County Council member who is running for county executive.

Wearing leg shackles and a pinstriped suit, Melvin Alaeze, 23, once the nation's top defensive lineman recruit, sat quietly as his new attorney asked Baltimore County Circuit Judge Ruth A. Jakubowski to vacate his plea and grant him a trial.

"It was a plea agreement he did not enter knowingly," said Andrew N. Ucheomumu, who also suggested that Alaeze's ability to make a decision had been impaired by lack of access to his "psychotic medication" while in jail.

The judge heard testimony from Alaeze's mother, a registered nurse, before breaking for lunch. The hearing was to have resumed in the afternoon with testimony from Kamenetz, but word came that Jakubowski had become ill during the break and the hearing was postponed until Oct. 4.
