'05 OH ATH Alex Daniels (Minnesota signee, transfer to Cincinnati)

Lord Jeff or Bucknutty

There is an update on Rivals about him. What I get from the headline is that OSU has offered him a schollie as an OLB and Okie offered him as a SS. He has been quoted as saying he wants to play safety in college. This may be the reason he is considering Okie this much.

You pretty much nailed it. The article also mentioned Tucker wanted him to do some drills with the DB's but Fickell wouldn't let him. Daniels mentioned he's a lot more comfortable at safety. Should be interesting to see what he says after he visits Norman.

"If we lose an exceptional prospect because a couple of assistant coaches bicker over where he should try out, then I'm not gonna be a happy camper."

I agree, why not say, we think you project to an OLB and will likely end up there whereever you go, but if you can prove yourself at SS then we will play you at your prefered position. I think there will be a lot better chance at playing OLB in the next few years then SS, especially if we get AMW. Don't lie to the kid, but we went through a similar situation with Sian a couple years ago, eventually he caved, but it worked out for him (somewhat) and he has stayed on the D-line which is what he wanted.

I am not super high on Alex, but looking at him he sure looks like a LB, people have made the shaun taylor reference, but he is built nothing like shuan taylor. ADW is more like Taylor, which is probably why he may stay at SS even if he gains weight. I hope they both end up at tOSU.

This is very disturbing that two coaches would do something that stupid. I hope we get him but right now it looks like a 50/50 chance. This would be a significant blow to our recruiting if he were to chose Okie. Hopefully he isn't gonna be that impressed with Okie but i'm sure they will give him the red carpet.

Wasn't Taylor something like 6'3" and 225 with 4.5 speed? Daniels is 6'3", 220, with 4.5 speed, i.e., the exact same except 5 pounds lighter (which he easily can gain in the weight room, or even a big meal at Burger King). AMW is also 6'3" with 4.5 speed, but at 185 pounds is 40 pounds lighter than Taylor (and 35 pounds lighter than Daniels). It's quite obvious to me that between Daniels and AMW, right now Daniels is a lot closer to having a Sean Taylor physique.

I think Daniels weighed in at 230 and ran a 4.4 at camp....Id call that impressive.

I think the numbers are where the comparisons are coming from, but I am talking about build. Check out that picture again, I cannot name many safties with shoulders as wide as Daniels. Taylor was long and lean, I know they are both listed as 6'3 but I am guessing Taylor was taller than Daniels, maybe Taylor had more muscle in his legs or maybe he was just more dense. The widest DB I can remember was C Grant and Daniels is definitely wider than him. I am in the same boat as you, let get him to tOSU, I am just saying he looks like a LB to me.

That kid is a freakin LB...

Oklahoma is lying to him. He may be a safety now, but he hasn't played his first game as a high school senior and he's already 220+. After two years in the weight room and the inevitable maturation that he'll go through, he'll be 240-250. He's a LB with freakish skills. That's his future. It's a bright one and he should embrace it.

Nice post, NoVA. Welcome to Buckeye Planet.

Prescott Burgess wanted to play safety as well. Where's he on the depth chart at scUM?

Someone should also tell Daniels how much money linebackers make and how much safeties make in the NFL. Do you want Ray Lewis money or Brian Dawkins money? Seems like a no brainer.

Thanks, this site is kickass.

These kids have to start realizing that some (most?) coaches will tell them anything to get them to sign a LOI.

You're correct about the LB's making more money. Although special players like Sean Taylor will warrant a high draft position and large initial payday in the league. The problem is Daniels is Sean Taylor's size RIGHT NOW. He has to anticipate that he'll be significantly bigger by the time he's ready for the NFL. There are some kids that look like they are 25 years old when they get to college (Maurice Clarett comes to mind) and they may not get much bigger. But Daniels looks like he could possibly grow into a DE. Hell, wasn't Will Smith his size when he was recruited?
