Cleveland Heights High School senior Bruce Hampton II was offered football scholarships by Stanford, Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Bowling Green and Toledo.
However, his reasons for orally committing to Indiana University are precise.
"I wanted to play in the Big Ten, and the opportunity to play my freshman year at Indiana is good," said Hampton, a 5-10, 180-pound cornerback-wide receiver.
"The deciding factor was academics. Stanford is great for academics, but Indiana has an excellent school of business and that's what I'm going to major in."
Hampton, who will play cornerback, runs the 40-meter dash in 4.5 seconds and his outstanding man-for-man style of coverage accounted for 15 solo tackles, eight assists, 11 bro ken-up passes and three interceptions this fall.
Hampton has a 3.78 grade average, includ ing a 4.1 grade point average in advanced- placement courses.
"It was a tough decision, but I'm glad it's over," the University Heights resident said. "I'm still getting calls from schools that recruited me. It's only a verbal commitment, and those schools feel they can change my mind.
"But I've made up my mind. I'm going to Indiana."
