Shumaker gets Division I attention
Delphos St. John's senior-to-be fullback Matt Shumaker will be a “watched man” this next football season. Shumaker, who rushed for 2,100 yards last season as a junior and more than 1,500 yards as a sophomore (in only seven games due to a knee injury), is drawing early interest from several Division I schools -- including Ohio State, Iowa, Nebraska, Boston College, Indiana, Wisconsin and Michigan -- who have all been in contact. He lists his top four as Ohio State, Iowa, Nebraska, and Wisconsin. Shumaker stands 6-2, weighs 230 and lists his 40-meter time at 4.7. He ran a 4.6 before having knee surgery in 2002, but has consistently clocked at the 4.6-4.7 level since then. Shumaker went to Michigan’s camp last year and plans to camp at Iowa and Ohio State this year for a day at each. At this time, he said isn't sure about other camps. Most recently, Shumaker was one of several Buckeye prospects to attend Ohio State's “junior day” at the Woody Hayes Center two weekends ago. “It went pretty well,” he said. “There were about 40 other kids. The coaches addressed us and we toured the facility. We ate lunch and then watched the OSU basketball game being played at the Schott' (Schottenstein Center) later that day. It was my first visit anywhere." Shumaker got to meet OSU Head Coach Jim Tressel at “junior day” and also talked with assistant coaches Bill Conley and Joe Daniels. Shumaker noted that will return to Ohio State for spring practices and the annual spring game and will likely be a fullback prospect this year. “I play fullback and linebacker,” he said, adding that he has more experience -- and feels more comfortable -- on offense. “I haven't played much defense since my sophomore year, although I played defense in certain situations last season." Shumaker started on the varsity football team as a freshman at St. John’s and showed capabilities at linebacker even then. Despite being moved from tailback to fullback, Matt has put up very impressive offensive numbers. “I was originally a tailback,” he said. “I played both positions last year but was a tailback for the first seven games." Shumaker noted that he started playing fullback almost exclusively and was getting about 15 carries a game. The Blue Jay has been busy recently with basketball, but is a solid weight room performer. He has been named St. John’s “Mr. Fitness” in the past for his work ethic in the weight room and his overall training in the off-season. His best bench press was 330 pounds last summer and he also produced a 425-pound squat. With so many schools wanting his services -- and contacting him almost on a weekly basis -- it appears at this point that, while he would like to get his decision out of the way, Shumaker is going to wait and see how things develop. “I'd like to get it over with but it depends on what offers are on the table,” he said, adding: “I'm just going to kind of let it happen. If the right offer's on the table, I'll take it." But what if the St. John's offensive standout gets two or three offers that are great offers? What factors will he use to decide? “Three things: academics, a good football program with a good tradition and a good fit with the coaches and players,” he said. Well, one thing is for sure, whoever gets Shumaker's services will not only be getting a great football player, but also a good-natured young man.

This kid is a fucking animal with a big time heart.and character. I have seen him play quite few times over the last couple of years. The battles he had had with MAC rival St. Henry are classic examples of everything that is great w/HS football. Tressel could do alot worse than give this kid a shot just for his attitude. He has just amde a commecial for Saint John's School that is pretty funny as well. (I'm pretty sure it him anyways)

Fullback Matt Shumaker of Delphos (Oh.) St. John's was one of the many participants at Nike Camp in Columbus, and he came away with a good showing as he measured 6-0 1/2, 229 pounds, ran a 4.63, posted a 30.4 vertical, and ran a 4.21 shuttle.

"I kind of surprised myself down there, but I shouldn't have. I was working hard to make a good showing," he said.

What's been going on recruiting-wise for Matt?

"Not much really," he said. "I went to Notre Dame for junior day.

"I had not really heard from them, then they ask me to come over for the spring game and junior day. I was really impressed with what I saw."

So far, the schools that have been in to see Shumaker are Purdue, Bowling Green, Toledo, Ohio U., Miami (OH), and Army.

"Most of them are recruiting me as a fullback but some want me as a linebacker," he said.

Where will he be camping this summer?

"I'm trying to work out something with Iowa," he said. "I'll definitely be going to the Purdue, Notre Dame, Bowling Green, and Ohio State."

"I'm pretty versatile and I'm mostly a power runner. I can also put on a few moves too. I'm also a good blocker. I need to work on my speed and agility. I want better footwork and cutting ability."

He enjoyed tOSU camp and mentioned that Doc Tress told him they offer FB's late (which could explain why they are also waiting on Clapp). No suprise but tOSU is the favorite.

I just got back from a wedding in Delphos, and some guys up there told me that Tressel is still very interested in Matt Shumaker. They are definitely recruiting him for defense, so the coaches at St. John's are plann9ng to make sure he gets plenty of action on that side of the ball this fall.

College hopes put on hold — for now —for Shumaker
by Jim Metcalfe
DELPHOS — College football is definitely on the mind of St. John’s senior fullback/tailback Matt Shumaker.

As of now, though, those plans are on hold as he prepares to lead his Blue Jays against Bellevue tonight at Stadium Park.

“Most of the coaches I talked to told me that the fullback position is the last one they give scholarships for, so I need to be patient. I can’t worry about that right now,” he began. “I haven’t talked to any coaches recently — I did
at the five or so camps I went to this summer — and I guess the calls will start coming again Sept. 1. A lot of them want films from our first two games this year; I guess they want to wait and see what I do.”

Shumaker, who boasts a 4.6 40-yard dash and a 345-pound bench press (done at the annual Mr. Fitness competition at St. John’s), figures he has things he can work on in the meantime.

“I can always improve my strength and footwork. Those were some of the things the camp coaches told me,” he continued. “I know I need to work on my speed and you can always get stronger. I benched 225 pounds 15 times at the Ohio State camp, which is pretty good.”

According to Street and Smith magazine’s High School Edition, the Blue Jay senior is ranked in the second 100 players to watch throughout the Midwest region.

Shumaker noted that he will be playing some linebacker as well as splitting time between fullback and tailback.

“I think that’s where I’ll begin the season but I guess the plan is to play me more on defense, too. Actually, right now, I think fullback is the best spot for me at the next level; it’s where I seem to be getting the most looks,” he said. “I really don’t have any individual goals; I want to help the team win and win a lot, and that begins against Bellevue. All we can do is prove ourselves one week at a time.”

If he had his druthers, he would get an offer from Ohio State.

The Buckeyes are my favorite team. However, I haven’t received any offers from anyone,” he went on. “I plan on going to see their opener next weekend versus Cincinnati and also see a Miami of Ohio game.”

Notre Dame, Stanford and other Mid-American Conference schools are also on his list at the moment but that could change, he said.

His left knee injury toward the end of his sophomore campaign seems like a distant memory at this point.

“I don’t think that has made a difference in the recruiting. Coaches ask about it but don’t seem concerned,” he stated. “Coming back last year was more mental. I guess I was afraid subconsciously about hurting it again and ran tentatively at times. Slowly, it dawned on me that my knee was OK and then I started running better and better.

“In fact, it seems that all the work I’ve done has made it twice as strong.”

Playing basketball last winter has also helped .

“I could tell in the spring; I was in better shape, I was a lot faster and my agility was improved,” he added. “Coaches have told me that they like multi-sport athletes.”

St. John’s coach Todd Schulte echoed Shumaker’s team-first philosophy.

“His goal is for the team to do well first and then go from there. He really is all about team success and not individual glory,” Schulte stated. “As a coach, you don’t try to make sure he gets this many yards or that many carries; we don’t look to showcase him. He has to get his carries and hopefully his yards for us to win but you just call the plays and he performs.

“Really, I hope he stays healthy and we have success as a team. That’s what my goal is.”

This kid has some pretty good numbers on both offense and defense and he will be a good one. There have been alot of rumblings about the runningback situation and I remembered early on that Doc Tressel was interested in Matt. Has there been any talk between the coaches and Matt?

I know the FB's won't be considered til after this saturdays AA game but one can never have too many valuable FB's to open up holes for Ohio State. Makes a huge difference IMO.
