Marcus is a big hitter who is built like Michael Doss, but probably a step slower. Marcus will attend OSU's camp. Although Ohio is loaded with DB prospects this year (O'Neal, Myers-White, Lenix, Daniels, Harrison, Davis, Hampton, etc.), a kid like Marcus could open some eyes with a strong camp showing.

Rams running back ready to take leading role
Thursday, September 02, 2004
Tim Rogers
Plain Dealer Reporter
For the last three years, Akron Garfield's Marcus Council relied on older teammates to show him the way.

Now it is time for Council to lead.

"In my first three years here, most of my teammates were older than me," said Council, who will lead the Rams into Green Street Stadium on Friday for a showdown with St. Vincent-St. Mary. "I listened to them and learned from them. Now that I'm a senior, I can tell a lot of the younger guys are looking to me."

Council, a 5- 11, 200-pound safety and run ning back, is Garfield's most important player. Coach Bob Sax said Council, a rare four-year starter at Garfield, leads by example with his on-the-field performance.

"The hard part for me is learning to be a vocal leader," said Council, who rushed for 468 yards in limited duty last season, but led the team with 33 tackles and three interceptions.

Sax is not concerned.

"He is such a mature kid," he said of Council, who has drawn interest from several Mid-American Conference and Big Ten schools. "He is a great kid, a 3.5 student. You can tell that he has the respect of the school's administrators and staff, and that he's looked up to by the younger kids."

The main reason for the admiration is that Council plays the game the way it should be played. He practices the way a serious player practices.

"He's old school, for sure," Sax said. "He a no-nonsense kind of kid."

When he was 4 years old, Council lost his father, Walter, to a heart attack. For so many years it was just Marcus and his mother, Bobbie Sheffield, who has remarried.

"She is my best friend," said Council, who has a picture of his father tattooed on his left arm. "Losing my father was hard. I remember a lot about him. He used to take me all around and tell people that I was going to go to Garfield, and that I was going to be a football player."

He not only has become a football player, but he has become a special football player. He has become the kind of player you want leading your team.
