'05 Ohio LB Lance Phillips

Phillips first playing time, other than special teams, was starting the 2nd half of the first game his freshman year at DE. The coaches moved him to LB the next week. He's played DT and LB all the way up to high school.

He doesn't care where he's playing, as long as it gets him on the field. Recently sent a tape to Mr. Long of sophomore season when he was sometimes moved ino the backfield in a "stacked I" position. Mr. Long was unaware Phillips played offense ( mainly guard) and requested tape of him in the backfield.

The speed and level of competition questions will remain. However, Phillips has played his best against the larger schools and bigger games and he took 0.15 off his 40 working with a new high school coach for 2 months. Both the Nike and OSU Sr. Camp times were on the same surface. I imagine working with a college strenght and conditioning coach in an individualized program, daily, might show greater benefits.

Thanks for the update, whs. I was really impressed after watching Phillips' video. He's a hitter and seems to have the football instincts you just can't teach and he definitely plays faster than his 40 time indicates. Just seems to me if the only knock is speed moving down to the D-line would ease that worry and it doesn't seem out of the question considering he's 6'2" and 238 as a high school junior.

whs56- Duane just wrote on nice article (linked below) on Lance and Matt Schumaker. It made mention to the fact that Lance is willing to play FB. That is the kind of versatility that might land him an offer with the Bucks.

Thanks for keeping us posted.

Many seem to favor Brandon Long as most favorable in state LB. At OSU Sr. Day he tested well; but, doesn't open hips as well as Phillips getting in coverage and Coaches kept instructing to stay low. Also a NE Ohio contributor noted on BN, Long seemingly doesn't always play up to ability, getting 5 tackles/game. I am obviously biased; but, Phillips stays low and plays balls to the wall, both ways. Had 133 tackles, sitting over 2 halves due to score, with 35 tackles for loss. Long does play stiffer competition and has more straight away speed. Phillips posted a 4.12 shuttle on one of his two runs at Marshall Camp. Who knows? Will be irrelevant if the Bucks get the elite OOS prospects. Whatever the outcome, it's been a fun ride and both will be playing in the '05 season.

Is Lance still being recruited by OSU? He sure looks like he could take the punishment in a Big ten football game and also he looks like he could dish out some as well on a good lead block at FB. I looks like he runs somewhere between a 4.61 & 4.79 -40(as posted before), and that isn't a bad time if he can lead block. Plus from what I have heard he would love to be a Buckeye !!!

I'm actually good friends with Lance. Last time I heard that it was possible for him to be a FB. Although he hasn't seen any playing time at that position, I'm quite positive he would do whatever it took to be a buckeye. He's a great guy and very intelligent. He always tells me "I'm nothing special I just play hard"...I seen him make a one handed pick earlier this year off a guys shoulder pad...He's a good kid..I wish him the best.

I'm just echoing what's already been said, but in a case like this it's worth repeating. Sounds exactly like the type of player I love to see us sign.

I whole heartedly second that about Lance. Everything I have read about him has been positive. Plus too boot he'd love to be a Buckeye. How can you beat that? Its been evident with recent OSU FB play, that OSU needs a hardy, strong, hard working FB to stand up to the weekly pounding that the OSU's schedule and Big Ten dishes out. I think Lance is one heck of a strong kid with alot of football smarts. Any kid who has 133 tackles has to have a good knowledge of the game no matter what the competition is. Given that footbal smarts, he'd make a very good and much needed addition as a Fullback. It also seems like he'll play anywhere just to get on the field. Recently he has run a 4.61- 4.79 -forty. I mean how fast do you have to be to put a hurtin on a LB coming threw the hole? What OSU needs is a tough, strong kid to plow threw those holes and if you look at Lance .. WHEW he sure looks the part. I hope he is in a Scarlet and grey uniform soon !!

I still think this kid would be a good quality recruit as a DE and/or FB. Being a versatile players is such a plus with this recruit too. He'll play anywhere if given the opportunity to play for OSU. He also has a great nose for the ball and is a blue collar, hard working player who loves the Buckeyes. You cannot beat that in a potential player.
OSU is in much need for some hard hitting FB's and he fits the bill.
Also OSU seems to be in need of beefing up the Defensive line. He is strong as an ox. All points to a good recruit who will work hard for OSU if given the chance.
