'05 PA LB Andre Mathis (Tennessee signee)

You can add Anthony Felder (Seattle O'Dea; 6'3", 225, 4.5) to your LB wish list. Of the five (Mathis, McCoy, Moffett, Felder, and Cushing), OSU would be lucky to get just one; the rest of the LB class would likely be comprised of Fred Lenix (possible safety or RB), Alex Daniels (ditto), and/or Brandon Long (possible TE).

Cleve - I agree that OSU has a very good chance at Mathis; he's probably the only PA player that the Bucks sign this year, although QB Bill Stull and DB Jayson White would probably sign if offered.

i really think we need two high callibur talents here. Now they dont have to be 5* recruits, i dont care if one is a 2* guy, just as long as we get two guys that can come in and play. Our incredible 02' class will be seniors next season, and there is no garuntee AJ Hawk, Anthony Schlegal or Bobby Carpenter will be here. Fortunately LB is a position few leave early for, but even if they stay we will have 3 senior LB's next season. Since 2002, of the LB's we have signed only Freeman isnt a project, although Lukens is exciting to me personally and Terry seems to be a sleeper. Signing two bonafide studs this year would really solidify the LB corp for the next few seasons. Still wish we got Bryant last season

I'll put money down right now that Hawk and Carpenter will be here for the 2005 season. The only way a LB declares early for the draft is if they have an absolute monster junior year. I believe Hawk will be a 1st-team AA, but I don't he'll have the season to warrant leaving. Carpenter will also be very good, but with Hawk and Schlgel/D'Andrea playing, attention will be diverted away from enough to where he'll be lucky to make 1st-team all-conference. Now, I don't know Schlegel well enough to guess about his persona, but out of the three he'd be the most likely to bail early seeing as he's already bailed on the AFA for bigger and better things. Besides, we'll have Kerr in the LB corps still, so we're set for a while.

Mili,

I agree with you and I don't understand why a lot of people believe that Hawk will be gone after this year; muchless Carpenter. One thing to consider is how OSU does this year. If OSU loses a game or two I will bet anything that ALL Juniors wil return to play for the NC in 2005.

An excerpt from the most recent Rivals article (7/8/04):

“I really didn’t think it would be like this,” he said of recruiting. “I thought that maybe, if I was lucky, I’d have a chance to go to Pitt. But I never thought that I’d have a chance to play in the Big Ten or the SEC. It’s all been real cool so far.”
The quote of the year so far; I wonder if Doke and BigJohnStud saw that one!

I would have to agree with you bigtimebuck, we do need a pair or more servicable LB's in this class. I have stated the exact same opinion on a few other threads. I feel that getting one of the above listed studs becomes a priority for this class. Also, there are actually 4 senior LB's next year; Hawk, Carpenter, Schlegel, and D'Andrea. Need to provide depth behind these four studs. We do have a good start, but need to build and do it this year.

I am a little worried about our LB depth once Hawk/Schlegel/Carpenter leave

I did a little research to compare the scUM LB depth to tOSU's just for comparinson.

OSU has 5 LBs that are going to be frosh or SO, while UM has 8. UM also had Chris McLaurin commited for this year. OSU's 5 include walkon Trever Robinson and Kerr who has had some rumors floating around. I'm not including Bradon Smith, who is a probable move to DL. I did include Hoobler though.
OSU really only has Freeman, Kerr, Lukens, and Hoobler.

We need 2 solid LBs this year. If we dont get any, in 2006 we will have only those four and robinson plus whatever recruits we get next year. So OSU would NEED at least 2 of this years high school JRs would be recieving significant playing time at tOSU. Frosh can contribute, but you can not count on them too. So we need 2 solid LBs/

Michigan also is runing a 3-4 defense now. I think Terry is gonna end up as a LB and we could see a saftey move down to LB as well...possibly Patterson?? That being said, they will probably take 2 this year.

The latest edition of the Sporting News/SchoolSports High School Football guide is out and there is high praise for several players and teams that may be familiar to fans in the area.

The magazine ranks the top 100 players in five separate regions and ranks the top 50 teams in the nation.

Erie Cathedral Prep linebacker Andre Mathis is rated the 20th-best prospect in the East region, which includes players from Maine to Georgia
