Good article about some of the talent in Broward and Palm Beach

When Northeast held its spring game against Cooper City, Hurricanes' coach Adam Ratkevich was excited that the guest list would include coaches from the University of Miami, Florida State, Florida, Notre Dame, Stanford, Kansas State and some 20 other colleges from around the nation.

The Tuesday night contest attracted fans, recruiting services and parents to see what everyone had been talking about throughout the month of May. It was that kind of month throughout Broward as well as Palm Beach.

In anticipation of one of the most talented senior classes the two counties have ever produced, this spring saw more university and college coaches at practices and games than ever before, as up to 50 players had been looked at as elite performers.

Running back Antone Smith of Pahokee went into the spring as one of the nation's elite players, but there were others who needed to step up and show recruiters that they also could play. One of those was Northeast linebacker Demetri Stewart.

The 6-foot-3, 210-pound linebacker was in the spotlight from January up until the final day of May. Stewart was offered scholarships by up to 40 schools, including Miami and Notre Dame.

"This was a very exciting spring for all of us at this school," Stewart said. "Last year, it was all about [running back] Dimitri Linton [who signed with Rutgers]. Now, we have had the chance to step into the spotlight."

Stewart and Northeast weren't the only headliners this spring. Heading into the summer, Broward athletes will be fielding calls, heading to camps and getting ready for a season that could produce up to 40 Division I-A prospects in February.

Other athletes who will be coveted by Division I-A programs include Plantation lineman Jeffrey Owens (6-3, 280 pounds) and receiver Cedric McGee (6-2, 205); Dillard linebacker Elijah Hodge (6-1, 195) and defensive lineman Edward Bradwell (6-1, 215); Piper defensive lineman Vladimir Richard (6-2, 255); Ely offensive linemen Ronnie Wilson (6-2, 320), tight end Michael Holton (6-3, 220) and defensive back Walter McFadden (5-9, 155).

Miramar receiver Kimbrick Baker (6-2, 206) and teammate, linebacker Artis Warthen Jr. (6-2, 205) also are players who watched their respective stock go up. Coaches were thrilled with the play of Boyd Anderson linebacker Gerald Williams (6-4, 210), who has more than 15 major college offers. McArthur defensive end Chris Pino (6-3, 220) didn't have an outstanding spring, but is still coveted by many schools.

At Deerfield Beach, the Bucks have a pair of defensive standouts who have been sorting through offers -- linebacker Wendy Napoleon (6-2, 220) and safety Jarvis Hicks (6-2, 200). South Plantation cornerback Brandon Williams (5-11, 175) also is a player to watch.

Perhaps no player made more of a jump into elite company than Hollywood Hills quarterback Paul McCall. The 6-2, 190-pounder went from being a low Division I-A player into one of the most coveted passers in the state. The same happened to North Broward Prep receiver Mike Moore (6-1, 180), who was impressive at every practice.

Before he ever kicked a ball at St. Thomas Aquinas, American Heritage transfer Joe Surgan watched the offers pour in. His 60-yard field goals in practice had something to do with that.

When the 2003 season ended, the Broward player everyone wanted to keep an eye on was running back Amod Ned, but the 5-10, 190-pounder didn't play during the spring because of a hand injury, which will put the pressure on for him to prove himself in the fall.

In Palm Beach County, Pahokee's Smith is making a push to become one of the state's top runners ever. But this is an area loaded with quality football talent.

In addition to Smith, there's also Wellington transfer wide receiver Jessie Hester Jr. (5-11, 175), who will be moving to Glades Central for his final season.

Hester's new teammates, defensive end Tommie Duhart (6-3, 255) and defensive back Randy Phillips (6-1, 175) are quality performers as well.

Palm Beach Lakes quarterback Jarrett Brown (6-3, 190) and running back Jetavious Best (5-9, 190) are major college prospects who have had positive showings at every practice, camp and in the spring game.

Royal Palm Beach lineman Carl Spitale (6-6, 330) watched his stock rise. So did Atlantic running back C.J. Francis (5-8, 190) and teammate Courtney Robinson, a 6-1, 190-pound safety.

After all the quality seniors John I. Leonard had a year ago, there is wide receiver Charlie Coley (6-6, 180) and defensive back Kevin Rogers (5-10, 190), who have colleges talking about their ability on the field. After three years of putting together a program, Boynton Beach finally has its first major college prospect in 6-1, 215-pound linebacker Baxter Grigsby. Palm Beach Gardens is back on the map with 6-1, 195-pound running back Derrick McCray.

Other major college prospects to keep an eye on are Jupiter running back Roderick Hill (5-11, 177), Dwyer lineman Chris Tessitore (6-2, 270) and versatile (running back/defensive back) athlete Chris May (5-10, 190), and Santaluces tight end Steven Dell, a 6-2, 215-pounder.

HH- do you agree that this year is an exceptionally good year in Broward and Palm Beach???

Any of the other players listed in the article camping at tOSU?

Thanks as always HH!

Nice post, Buckskin! It pretty much sums up SFla recruiting up to this point.

At least one other player on the list has some interest in Ohio State:

Baxter Grigsby
Outside linebacker
Boynton Beach (FL)
Height: 6-foot-1 (Nike)
Weight: 216 pounds (Nike)
40-yard dash: 4.66 seconds (Nike)
Bench reps: 17 (Nike)
Vertical leap: 29 inches (Nike)
Shuttle time: 4.62 seconds (Nike)

No other info; no offers; OSU in his top 5.

That's why Miami rose to prominence in the 1980's-Schnellenberger and Jimmy Johnson realized that if they could get whomever they wanted from those counties, they would have a mega-powerhouse. They actually called those three counties "the State of Miami".

I'll have to see this kid. I work here in Boynton... Right next to Bru's Room (Brudzinski's) sports bar/restaurant. I'm assuming that Beau Brudzinski is Bob's kid and I'm also assuming that he'd have to say yes to the Bucks, considering Bob is from Fremont, OH and was a BUCKEYE.

Jarrett, the QB from Palm Beach Lakes, won't be academically eligible for college according to one of the coaches from Lakes. My wife teaches there and I just recently met the coach. He had to tell me that he went to a coaches clinic and listened to coach T and coach T was "boring". I said "what was he doing giving a lecture on rules and regulations or something?" He said "how'd you know?"

I should have a final list for camp by tomorrow. In SOUTHEAST Florida we are looking at 6 kids from 6 schools including Dillard to Miami Edison. In addition, Beau Brudzinski, son of All-American Bob, will be at the second session.

Didn't see this post.

I went and listened to Schnellenberger talk a few months back at the Rotary Club meeting and he said that when he built the Miami program (he's a character) that he used local kids on purpose so that there'd be a grass roots feeling for the home team. He said he's also trying to do that with Florida Atlantic (FAU) now. Looks like he's having some success with that, too, seeing how they almost went to the 1AA Championship where the Fighting Blue Hens ripped my Purple Raiders of Colgate.

9/20/03: Plantation only threw the ball twice in the game, but one was a 34-yard TD pass to McGee that gave the team a 14-0 lead three minutes into the game. Three minutes later, McGee made it 21-0 on a fumble recovery in the end zone.

Here is a little video of Mcgee. He is #9 in red and catches a TD all alone in the endzone about 3/4 of the way through the video.

Eljiah Hodge-Insiders premium

Hodge named two favorites Miami (home school) and Iowa (where is brother goes)- he has offers from both

Richard Gordon- Insiders premium

Gordon is naming Florida State, Florida, Nebraska, Ohio State, and South Florida as his favorites- all have offered- he has 12 offers and still waiting for a Miami offer. It seems like he might be favoring FSU and S. Fla above the rest.

Dimitri Stewart- Insiders Premium

He is up to 57 offers and his top 5 is Miami, Notre Dame, Ohio State, LSU and Oklahoma. He is a big fan of Mike Doss, who was his favorite player. But Miami is his favorite and there is good chance he goes there.

Looks like we get a visit from Adkins :osu:

free insiders article on Spencer Adkins

A DNA analysis might be in order for coaches scouting Naples linebacker Spencer Adkins. You see, he occasionally trades in his football prowness for a spot on Golden Eagle Comic Relief Team. Last season, he switched jerseys with a fellow teammate who had a similar body type, just to fool college coaches who had come to scout him. Fortunately for those coaches in attendance, the Naples staff let the cat out of the bag.

Mark McLeod: What has been your focus this summer?

Spencer Adkins: "Lifting. I'm trying to get bigger, stronger, and faster. I haven't attended any camps at all. I'm just focused on getting better. I really want that ring."

Mark McLeod: What have you patterned your workout routine with high school coaches, personal trainer, or advice from a college player?

Spencer Adkins: "No. Everything that I've done has been the routine that our high school coaches have taught us. Coach (Sam) Dollar has been a big inspiration to me."

Mark McLeod: Is everybody recruiting you as a linebacker? Has anybody mentioned D-End?

Spencer Adkins: "No. Everybody is recruiting me at linebacker. That's where I'll play."

Mark McLeod: Which teams are recruiting you the hardest?

Spencer Adkins: "I would say Georgia, Florida, LSU, and Florida State."

Mark McLeod: Have you determined your visit list?

Spencer Adkins: "Right now it's Florida, Florida State, Georgia, and Ohio State. I'm going to take an unofficial to Miami."

Mark McLeod: Is there a school that you have looked at as a favorite?

Spencer Adkins: "I've been a Miami fan all of my life."

Mark McLeod: Of all of the coaches recruiting you, who has been the most impressive and why?

Spencer Adkins: "Zook. Because he talks to you like you're a person. He talks straightforward. He doesn't get into this business of trying just to get you to go to their school. I like his aggressiveness too."

Mark McLeod: Who else has made a strong impression on you?

Spencer Adkins: "Richt. He's straight up. He also talks to you about other things besides football."

Mark McLeod: What will be that one thing that does it for you when it comes time to determine which college is best for you?

Spencer Adkins: "Well, it will be one way -- that moment that I step on campus and just feel like this is the place for me. That will be the thing that lets me know where to go. It'll be wherever I feel the most comfortable."

Mark McLeod: Are you an athlete looking for a school to help improve your game while getting an education or do you consider yourself a student-athlete trying to get an education, while trying to go to a school that can help me athletically?

Spencer Adkins: "No, I'm an athlete who is is looking to improve his game. I really think that any of the schools that I attend will give me a good education"

Mark McLeod: What will you major in?

Spencer Adkins: "Business"

Mark McLeod: If you had to arrange three criteria...depth chart, education, and coaching staff in level of importance to you, what would they be?

Spencer Adkins: "Coaching staff, depth chart, and education"

Mark McLeod: What games do you most want to witness on your recruiting visits?

Spencer Adkins: "Of all the games that I could attend this fall, I'd like to go to the state match ups the most. I'm really looking forward to the season opener between Miami and Florida State. I'd also like to go to the Florida/FSU game. I'll probably stay in state."
