Coach's Comments: "Raymond is a self-starter," said head coach Joe Koch. "He is a pleaser who is out to please his mother and coaches. He didn't grow up with a whole lot, and he is determined to make something for himself. He is a good student, and wants to find a place where he can maximize his potential."

His current favorites are Iowa, ND, Miami(FL), LSU, PSU, and Ohio State

Landing Henderson will be difficult for Notre Dame, but the Irish might be making some headway.
Henderson received a sparkling review as he used his size, strength and tenacity to terrorize Oak Creek High School opponents. He recorded 104 tackles and 19 sacks as a junior while establishing himself as a near 4.0 student in the classroom.

Sounds like a nice fit for Notre Dame, but there were a few snags. One, Henderson talked about going to the same school as linebacker Travis Beckum, a high school teammate rated just slightly ahead of Henderson as the No. 1 prospect in the state. Beckum likely doesn’t have the grades to end up at Notre Dame, throwing a potential wrench into Notre Dame’s recruitment of Henderson. Secondly, a teammate of Henderson’s in 2003, defensive end Rhyan Anderson, chose Miami in February.

Landing Henderson will be difficult for Notre Dame, but the Irish might be making some headway. As reported by Pete Sampson of BlueandGold.com, Henderson received an in-person visit from just one college head coach during the May evaluation period, and that was none other than Tyrone Willingham.

“Notre Dame is recruiting me really hard,” said Henderson recently to Sampson

Henderson said he wants to attend the Notre Dame-Michigan game on Sept. 11 in Notre Dame Stadium. One of his official visits will go to LSU this fall. Others in the running, in addition to Notre Dame and Miami, are Tennessee, Ohio State, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Arkansas.

This would be a huge catch for the Irish, literally and figuratively. Henderson is a man. He’s a powerful, compact athlete who could very well end up being an outstanding three-technique. He’s 250 pounds now but could easily transform himself into a 295-pound tackle down the road. And yet he has the quickness and technique to be a dominant strong side defensive end in college.

Getting tackled by Henderson is like getting bear hugged. He wraps up ball carriers and doesn’t let them go. Henderson clamps down on ball carriers and engulfs, no, consumes them.

The competition for Henderson will be stiff, but it appears the Irish have made some inroads. If Henderson were added to the Irish commitment list, it would be their most significant catch of the class so far, which presently totals eight. It appears Notre Dame has a fighting chance for Henderson, although this battle likely will carry on through the balance of 2004.

Henderson is ranked No. 9 among defensive ends and is regarded as the No. 2 prospect in Wisconsin by rivals.com.

Not even a year has passed since similar things were stated about another Oak Creek athlete, Rhyan Anderson, who is now at the University of Miami.

But even as scouts from schools such as Florida State, Miami, Ohio State, Tennessee, Notre Dame and Oklahoma knock one another over to get their hands on these talented seniors, Beckum and Henderson carry on, content with being themselves.

Roaring engine
Henderson doesn't need the thought of stolen money to bring out the savage-like behavior found in defensive players.

He's just got it.

Everything needed to wreak havoc is already found mentally and physically in Henderson, a 6-5, 255-pound end.

"His No. 1 asset is definitely his motor. He never quits on a play and he goes as hard as he can. He's still got a ways to go fundamentally like all of these kids do, but you can work with somebody who's got a good attitude," Koch said.

The Knights feed off Henderson's dogged determination and gut-wrenching collisions.

"He's the battery of the team," Beckum said. "He keeps us energized, gets us hype. He's a big hitter and he's a leader.

"I don't think we would be as energetic as we are day to day without him on the team."

Henderson, a transfer from Milwaukee Vincent, also carries a 3.4 GPA.

"Everybody preached about grades to me, and that was real important," Henderson said. "Right now, I'm doing excellent. The last two marking periods, I got a 4.0. I know that's important to get it done in the classroom and bring it out to the field."

An electrifying speaker, Henderson gave the commencement address for eighth graders at St. Aemilian, a Milwaukee school where Koch's wife, Linda, works.

"I told them how I came from nothing to now, where I can go anywhere in the nation because of my scholarship," Henderson said.

Another source of Henderson's inspiration has been his mother, Lenore Henderson, who had a heart transplant when Raymond was 10.

"That's the main thing that inspired me to push myself a little harder," Raymond Henderson said. "I always wanted to do something to make her proud."

Henderson has scholarship offers from numerous major Division I programs, including Louisiana State, Miami, Ohio State and Penn State.

If all goes as planned, Raymond will be the third of his siblings to attend college. His brother, Raishaun Henderson, is a former track state champion (2000, 110-meter hurdles) now playing football at Northern Iowa. His sister, Shannon Sibley, is a student at Southern University.

Ready to move on
For now, Beckum's and Henderson's attention is on Oak Creek football.

Both were on hand as the unbeaten Knights surrendered a double-digit lead to Arrowhead in the fourth quarter of the state semifinal and lost, 26-25, last November.

This version of the Knights does not have the experienced personnel of the 2003 season, but Beckum and Henderson are ready to do their part in order to make this season a special one for Oak Creek.

"If we can get that far, we might as well take it all of the way," Beckum said. "It's got to happen before I graduate. It just brings you back for the next year to play even harder."

We have no shot at this kid, let's face it.

We don't have any shot for any Blue chip DE's this year.

Why? I don't know.

Loseing out on many blue chip DE's will cost our defense in the long run, mark my words.

And Doug Worthington is what?? As the #4 DE in the country, that seems pretty blue-chip to me. I don't believe we have a stellar shot at this particular duo, Henderson & Beckum, but that's because they want a package deal.

Don't sell Ryan Williams short either. The kid has a real nice burst coming off the edge and turned down Oklahoma to come here. While I agree we could use another DE in this class the guys that are coming ain't exactly chopped liver.
