'06 IN PF/C Luke Harangody (Notre Dame Verbal)

wadc45 said:
I really believe Harangody is an impressive player, and would add great depth, especially if we got Oden for a year or two. but if we are able to land Oden, Cook, Conley, and Lighty, I would really like to see Raymar Morgan with that group, especially with Dallas Lauderdale waiting in the wings.

Don't forget we also have B.J. Mullens coming in in '08, and he's supposed to be a top 25 talent in his class. Man is Matta doing a great job. We just have all of these studs looking at OSU now.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Luke Harangody entered a recent meeting with Indiana University coach Mike Davis as a skeptic.

He left the meeting with a scholarship offer -- and a fifth school to add to his list of finalists.

The 6-foot-7 Andrean junior center will weigh offers from Indiana, Purdue, Ohio State, Northwestern and Notre Dame as he nears a decision on his college future. Indiana didn't show any interest during Harangody's first three years at Andrean, but jumped into the running last month.

"It did kind of come out of nowhere," Harangody said. "They said the reason was that they really didn't recruit anybody during that period of time because Coach Davis said he was too involved with his job and taking care of his players with all the rumors about him losing his job."

The Hoosiers missed the NCAA tournament for the second consecutive season, and IU athletic director Rick Greenspan issued what amounted to a win-next year-or-else mandate.

"I was kind of skeptical," Harangody said. "(But) that was the first day that college coaches could come to recruits and he came to Andrean first. I thought that was a good sign.

"He's just a coach that cares about his players and he's always there for them and wants to take care of them."

Harangody has a busy week ahead of him. He will take an unofficial visit to Notre Dame on Thursday, and he's scheduled to take the SAT on Saturday.

If he decides on the Hoosiers, he'll continue a family legacy at the university. Harangody's father Dave played for the IU football team. His brother Ty, a member of Andrean's Class 3A state championship football team, will enter coach Terry Hoeppner's football program on scholarship next fall.

The rest of the finalists for Harangody's services have been in the running far longer than Indiana. Purdue coach Matt Painter was a frequent spectator at Andrean games this past winter.

"It's been real hard," Harangody said. "It's gonna be a real hard decision for me. I'm really high on all the schools."

Though he plans to make the most of his official visits, Harangody left the door open for that to change. Informed that Merrillville running back James Aldridge was so impressed with Notre Dame that he canceled the rest of his trips before verbally committing on Monday, Harangody didn't discount the notion that he, too, could make a decision soon.

"That could happen Thursday," he said.
Sources are saying this battle will come down to Ohio State and Purdue.

By Kyle Lamb
Date: May 10, 2005

So much of the focus from Buckeye basketball fans has been on Indianapolis Lawrence North duo Greg Oden and Mike Conley, but there is another player from Indiana who the Buckeyes are very interested in. Luke Harangody of Merrillville Andrean is one of the state's top big men, and he has been interested in Ohio State for quite some time. Kyle Lamb had a chance to speak with Harangody and got the latest on his recruitment.
</TD></TR><TR><TD colSpan=3>
Although much of the frenzied hype and speculation has centered around Indianapolis Lawrence North’s Mike Conley and Greg Oden, who made official visits to Ohio State this past weekend, another Indiana standout has quietly remained peacefully under the radar. Monday afternoon, Bucknuts brought him to the surface to get the latest on his own recruitment.

Luke Harangody, a 6-8 PF/C combo from Merrillville (Ind.) Andrean, visited Notre Dame on Thursday and is listing Ohio State as well as a few other Big Ten schools. We asked the four-star junior according to ScoutHoops.Com to update us on what has been going through his mind.

Harangody averaged 24 points and 12 rebounds this past season as a junior for Andrean. He is being looked at as a possible four or five in a 2006 recruiting class that Ohio State is hoping to complete by the end of the summer.

If Ohio State were to land Oden, Harangody could be viewed as a possible four, or even a center that would take over the reigns after Oden left Ohio State in a couple of years. Currently, Oden is down to Ohio State and Wake Forest with Indiana looking in from the outside.

But here is the latest on Harangody…

Bucknuts: So you took a visit to Notre Dame this past weekend?

Luke Harangody: “Yeah, I did, actually.”

BN: How did that go?

LH: “Well, it wasn’t an official, it was an unofficial visit actually, and it was just on Thursday.”

BN: So you were only up there Thursday?

LH: “Yes.”

BN: How far is South Bend (Ind.) from Merrillville?

LH: “About an hour and a half.”

BN: What all did you do while you were there?

LH: “I met with Coach (Mike) Brey for a while and walked around with the players on campus.”

BN: I remember you mentioned a couple of weeks ago that you had not heard from them (Notre Dame) in a while, have they been recruiting you since then?

LH: “Yes, they have.”

BN: Have they offered you a scholarship?

LH: “Yes.”

BN: Did they do that this weekend or before?

LH: “They offered me before I came up.”

BN: You’re hearing more from Indiana now, too. Where do they stand in the process?

LH: “They are just saying they would really like me to come to school there and they think it would be a great fit for me with my brother being down there (on a football scholarship) too.”

BN: Have you had a chance to take any other visits these past few weeks?

LH: “No, I haven’t.”

BN: Do you have any lined up?

LH: “Actually I might me coming to Ohio State here in a little bit, maybe in a few weeks, but we’ll see.”

BN: What schools are you seriously considering right now?

LH: “Right now it’s still probably Northwestern, Notre Dame, Indiana, Ohio State, and Purdue as the schools I’m most serious about.”

BN: Has Ohio State talked to you about their recruiting efforts and their desire to reel in a few other Indiana players in Mike Conley and Greg Oden?

LH: “Yeah, they have talked to me about that.”

BN: What are your thoughts on the idea of playing with them, especially being Indiana kids?

LH: “I think Coach Matta could bring in a great class and it would be really great for Ohio State. That could be a great team.”

BN: How is your AAU season coming as you guys (SYF Players) had a real good tournament down in Houston at the Kingwood Classic?

LH: “Yes we’re doing really well. We haven’t got to play since then.”

BN: I am guessing you’re really anxious to get back out on the court?

LH: “Definitely.”

BN: Talk about one of your teammates, (6-8 PF) Jamil Tucker. I have seen his name pop up a lot more this spring.

LH: “He just can go inside and out. He has gotten a lot more aggressive and rebounded a lot better. I think he’s gotten a lot better and I think he’s grown up a lot more too. He can bang the three as well.”

BN: I guess I heard him described as a three-point shooter, is that accurate or is that something he does well on the side?

LH: “He does that well too, but he does a lot pretty well but he can also drive and score inside too.”

BN: Is he a legit 6-8 or 6-9?

LH: “I would say that’s right.”

BN: Are you going to take any officials soon or unofficials, or do you know?

LH: “I have to see if I can get anything lined up, but I don’t know here at the time.”

BN: Are you planning to start winding things down this summer?

LH: “Yep, that’s the plan.”

Notre Dame, Ohio State, Purdue, Indiana and Northwestern are his top five and he wants to stay in the midwest. He has visited all the schools on unofficial visits, at this time he does not have any official visits scheduled.

At the State AAU tournament at Warren Central High School in Indiana over the weekend, Luke scored 15 points in a victory. Harangody is watching his diet and lifting on a daily basis. His top five teams are still Indiana, Notre Dame, Purdue, Northwestern and Ohio State. He says he is close to a decision and that no school on his list stands out but that he just wants to get it over with.

At the Indiana AAU state championship, Luke's team won the championship 85-71, Harangody scored 19 points and did it all in the final.

Luke says he will make a decision sometime this summer. He is described as a throwback player.

I saw Harangody in the Indiana Jr/Sr game Wednesday - if he is watching his diet it didn't show. He looked out of shape, VERY slow, and was totally ineffective. Just watching his mechanics, footwork, shooting form, defensive positioning, etc., I am not convinced that he will ever be a strong Big 10 caliber player. Of course I could easily be wrong, but I was not at all impressed.

<!--All Star Team Logo New--> PENDLETON, Ind. -- It had all the trappings of a typical casual All-Star exhibition. A midweek game with lots of autographs, smiles, and dunks in warm-ups. However, somehow that message was lost after the first tip went in the air. First because there would be three more such tips as it took triple overtime to decide this one...

If the All-Star game officials designed these exhibitions with the Juniors in an effort to test the Seniors, consider it mission accomplished. Unlike most All-Star affairs where fancy passes create oohs, and wide open lanes end with crowd pleasing dunking ahhs, every bucket on this night was contested.

Although primadonas aren't usually diving on the floor in groups of four or five fighting for loose balls. And coaches? Aren't these sorts of games just for show? Coach Joe Buck was on the floor repeatedly, once even crossing the center court to protest a call. There was a moment when this old corner thought I might see my first ejection in a Jr/Sr game.

No, this was a classic from start to end, and to make matters even interesting, I was able to enjoy the whole affair sitting among a dozen or so Varsity Club members.

Approximately 2000 other diehard fans packed a fire pit of a gym to see Lapel's Jason Holsinger bomb his way to a team high 22 points on 7 of 8 timely shots from beyond the arc. More backcourt fireworks for the Seniors came from LN's Brandon McPherson with 18, and Richmond's Dominic James starring with 17. Mr. Baskeball, Washington's Luke Zeller added 15 points and 7 rebounds.

For the Juniors it was a dominant front court that grabbed the attention of the nets. Lawrence North's Greg Oden powered his way to a game high 29, which included one thundering dunk that nearly brought the entire basket rigging down. Andrean's Luke Harangody and Gary West's Jamil Tucker also combined for 19 rebounds.

The Juniors were able to take a 5 point edge into halftime, but a 47 point second half outburst by the Seniors forced the first OT. The Seniors finally pulled away 16-9 in the final extra period for the win, 118-111. In the girls contest the Seniors methodically pulled away from their Junior counterparts, 91-77, Corydon's Dana Beaven topped the Seniors with 14, while Junior Northfield's Courtney Reed had a game high 19. Next up for the All-Stars is a trip to Richmond High School for another exhibition with the Juniors Thursday, June 23.

RICHMOND, Ind. -- The way the boys Junior All-Stars played Thursday night in their 109-96 victory over the Indianapolis Star Indiana All-Stars at Richmond High School, one would think they were the team that had spent the past two weeks practicing together every day.

Executing behind-the-back passes and alley-oops, the Junior All-Stars led by 15 at the half, and despite a run by the seniors in the middle of the second half, the Juniors' lead was never in doubt in the last five minutes.

"We played as a team," Lawrence North High School star Greg Oden said. "We passed the ball. We played decent defense. And all their 3s weren't going in, so that helped."

The Juniors' dominance of the boards also was key.

"When you get outrebounded 50-28, you're going to have a hard time winning," Indiana All-Stars coach Joe Buck said. "In the first half especially, I think they were a lot more aggressive in all points of the game."

The juniors, led by Oden, dominated the inside, forcing the seniors to take more outside shots than Buck wanted to see.

The All-Stars were 9-of-30 from 3-point range.

Richmond High School grad Dominic James, the clear crowd favorite, led the All-Stars with 26 points.

Adam Arnold had 20 points for the seniors and Jason Holsinger, suffering from shin splints, had 14.

Lawrence North's Mike Conley led the juniors in scoring with 24 points and had 10 assists.

Both Conley and Grayson Flittner completed some crisp, flashy passes to Oden, who finished with 17 points.

"We didn't play together this year," Flittner said of Conley and Oden, former Spiece Indy Heat teammates. "But we hang out a lot, play a lot together. I think our team chemistry lasted from years past."

Chris Kramer supplied the icing on the juniors' win, scoring 13 of his 23 points in the last five minutes.

The All-Stars' final game against Kentucky is Saturday night at Conseco Fieldhouse.

Luke Harangody and Jamil Tucker could be part of a basketball power at Ohio State, and Tucker said the decision of other star players to join that school could impact his selection.

The Indianapolis Star reported Lawrence North teammates Greg Oden — the USA Today National Player of the Year — and Mike Conley were planning to verbally commit to Ohio State.

The pair of players, who have won two straight Class 4A state championships, will make an official announcement on Wednesday.

Tucker said Oden’s and Conley’s decision has put Ohio State at the top of his list.

“It helps, knowing they’ll be there. It makes it easier going there. And I still do want to go there,” said Tucker, who plays with Oden and Conley on their Spiece Indy Heat AAU team and was offered a scholarship by the Buckeyes.

Harangody didn’t feel as strongly about Oden’s and Conley’s choice, but said Ohio State could become a national power.

“That really has no effect on my decision, but I wouldn’t mind playing with those guys,” Harangody said. “We talked about going to Ohio State together and about coach (Thad) Matta’s vision, but I don’t think it will have any effect on my decision.”

Harangody, the Post-Tribune Player of the Year after averaging 23.2 points, 12.3 rebounds and 1.0 blocks per game as a junior, said he did not know when he would make a final decision. Ohio State, Purdue, Indiana, Notre Dame and Northwestern have offered scholarships to the 6-foot-7 center.

West Side coach John Boyd said he hopes Tucker will choose a school by the end of July. Indiana, Arizona, San Jose State, USC and Miami are among the several schools that have offered a scholarship to Tucker, a 6-9 guard/forward who averaged 18.6 ppg, 8.7 rpg and 4.7 apg for the regional-champion Cougars. Tucker said Purdue is not on his list of schools.

“(Regarding Ohio State), there were some things on the table a while ago, but he’s got a number of schools looking at him now,” Boyd said. “He and his family are going to come to a decision.” Oden, a center, is the only other junior besides LeBron James to win the National Player of the Year award, while Conley is considered one of the nation’s top point guards. Oden had been considered a possible No. 1 pick in the NBA draft until the implementation a league rule change last week requiring players to be at least one year out of high school to be drafted.

* One More?: With four players in the fold already, there is still room for one more player in this class. Matta would probably like to land a power forward, and according to Conley, he has his eye on one that he likes. He even asked Conley to take a look at him.

"I'd like to see Luke Harangody from Adrian in this class," said Conley.

"He played on the junior all-star team, the one he (Matta) told me to look at. He was very good. I liked the way he played. He was physical and tough and would do all the dirty work. I said we need somebody like that. We don't need all super-super stars that can jump out of the gym. We need a big man who can do the little things as well."
