Not much info out there right now on Channels, but he should be one of the top DT prospects in the state. Xenia's coach, Ed Mignery, has a son that played TE for Scum. Channels was named All-Area on defense. Some game articles on Channels and Xenia can be found here.

Channels leaves Xenia for Wayne

Football star transfers to rival during season

By Mark Gokavi
Dayton Daily News
HUBER HEIGHTS | Eight days before trying to beat the Wayne Warriors, Martin Channels joined them.

The 6-foot-1, 310-pound defensive tackle enrolled at Wayne High School on Thursday morning. By the afternoon, Martin and his brother Lamar were at football practice.

So instead of dressing as a Xenia (2-1) team captain against Centerville (3-0) tonight, the NCAA Division I recruit likely will join Wayne (2-1) against Springfield South.

Messages seeking comment from Channels were not returned.

"I don't have any answers because I really didn't get any answers," Xenia coach Ed Mignery said of his final conversation with the family. "They withdrew from school right at the end of the day (Wednesday) and I didn't get a lot of answers."

This shocker comes about two weeks after a Wayne football player and wrestler transferred to Centerville. And while Wayne football coach Jay Minton gets a standout player, he's not a fan of the system that allows it. He said he told Mignery that exact thing Thursday morning.

"We just lost Lance Wagner two weeks ago to Centerville," Minton said. "I'm more concerned about the rule how it stands now because we've been on both sides of it."

It's a strange case of midseason musical chairs in the Greater Western Ohio Conference for three Division I playoff contenders.

"I think we have to be careful on how much latitude we leave for families," Minton said. "I know they say if you move, you're automatically eligible. They did move. What's to stop one of our kids that get mad at us ... and get an apartment somewhere else?"

As part of the recruiting process, Channels and Mignery were both at Ohio State's game against Texas on Saturday. Five days later, Channels provided proof of residence in the Huber Heights district and enrolled at Wayne.
Minton said he asked Channels why he would leave a school after three games.

"There were just some personal things," Minton said. "That's really between him and coach Mignery and him and Xenia."

After last football season, Donnie Evege transferred from Xenia to Wayne. Along with Channels' move, this heightens the strong feelings leading up to next week's game in Xenia.

Minton said he doesn't know if Channels will play much tonight but could be ready to go against Xenia. "I would ask any coach in the state of Ohio if Martin Channels came to your school is he going to play for you?" Minton said. "Take that poll. See what they would say."

A defensive tackle and state tournament wrestler, Wagner will dress for tonight's game between Centerville and Xenia. The Elks will be at Wayne on Oct. 14. Wagner's old wrestling coach, Alan Bair, moved from Wayne to Centerville this summer.

"I don't know if that had anything to do with that," Centerville football coach and athletics director Ron Ullery said. "I know the wrestling coach did not contact (Wagner) first."

The Ohio High School Athletic Association is studying several regulations, including its bylaws regarding transfers.

"Once your season started, if you have to make a move at that time, I think you ought to have it cleared by the OHSAA," Minton said. "Right now, you don't. If you move, you're automatically eligible."

Well that certainly is a touchy situation right there. Not so sure exactly what side of the fence I'm on on this issue, but to up and leave after three games seems a little rash. I'll wait to hear the whole story before passing any judgments though.

Channels waits for shot to play after transfer to Wayne

By the Dayton Daily News
After transferring from Xenia to Wayne last Thursday, 6-foot, 310-pound senior defensive tackle Martin Channels didn't play against Springfield South this past weekend.

Wearing No. 97, Channels watched from the sidelines as his new Warriors teammates won 38-12. Channels figures to get his chance in Friday's Game of the Week against his old teammates at Xenia.

"Coach (Jay Minton) told me I had a chance (to play)," Channels said. "I figured I could wait until (Friday)."

Channels said that the reason he and his brother Lamar (also a senior who wears 87) left Xenia was an issue with football coach Ed Mignery.

"There was some personal things," said Channels, who has two other brothers attending school in Xenia. "We didn't agree on some things."
Channels said he hopes to have the Wayne playbook down as soon as possible. "I know a lot of it but there's a lot of stunts I didn't get," he said. "So I'm waiting."

Xenia loses Channels, but he's already back with Wayne

Transfer storyline spices up GWOC Game of the Week

By Mark Gokavi

Dayton Daily News

HUBER HEIGHTS | There is a lot more to tonight's Xenia-Wayne football game than the transfer of Martin Channels.

But the player, both teams' coaches and others had plenty to say about the in-season move of a 6-foot, 310-pound defensive tackle with NCAA Division I offers.

Channels and his brother Lamar, both seniors, transferred last week from Xenia to Wayne.

He said his father and brother rented an apartment in Huber Heights. He also said his mother and other brothers are still in their home in Xenia.

A week after the switch, Channels and his Wayne Warriors teammates take to Xenia's Cox Stadium at 7:30 tonight ... as visitors.

"Our family thought it was in the best interests to make a move and this is our move," Channels said. "I play football. I'll just go out and do my best."

Personal reasons
Channels said issues with Xenia football coach Ed Mignery were part of the reason he left. He confirmed the reasons centered around a visit to Ohio State when the Buckeyes hosted Texas.

"There's a lot going on and a lot of misinformation," Mignery said. "All I can tell you is Martin attended the Texas-Ohio State game with two of his guests of his choice."

Were the coach and player getting along that night?

"As far as I know, we were," Mignery said. "He was a member of our team at that point."

The Xenia coach said a Boston College assistant coach was to stop by last Friday to recruit Channels. Obviously, that didn't happen. Mignery said all of the offers Channels had were from Mid-American Conference schools.
Paired with defensive back/running back Donnie Evege's transfer from Xenia to Wayne midway through last school year, the situation spices up the game between conference rivals.

"Everybody's going to talk and I can't control that," Mignery said. "People are entitled to whatever they believe. The people that know me know I am a man of integrity and I operate a disciplined program and parents are free to do whatever they choose.

"The people that are close to our program are overall happy and they like what we're doing."

OHSAA paperwork
Wayne Athletics Director Jim Sherard said the Channels family not only registered for school Sept. 17 but signed more paperwork requested by the Ohio High School Athletic Association.

OHSAA Assistant Commissioner Duane Warns said this week that the "Affidavit for Bona Fide Residence" form was recently developed and approved in the past two weeks. The form is available at www.ohsaa.org.
"It's just to make sure, it's just another layer that people were telling the truth," Warns said. "That when they said they moved, they were actually moving and they lived where they said they lived. If you have a notary public on it and you sign it and you're not telling the truth, you're actually perjuring yourself."

Warns said the school, in this case Wayne, is responsible to verify the new residence.

A new 'Warrior'
Wayne football coach Jay Minton said he questioned the Channels' move.
"I talked to Channels and I said, I don't know what happened and all that,' " Minton said. "It's a pretty extreme move, I guess I would say."

Neither Martin nor Lamar played last week against Springfield South.
"We felt like one day of practice (was not enough)," Minton said. "There's some integrity there. I feel bad for all the (Xenia) kids involved in this."

Coaches of the Greater Western Ohio Conference must still prepare for Channels, whose presence can change game plans. And while every OHSAA regulation has been met, South coach Aaron Shaffer said a midseason transfer isn't a good thing.

"I hope everything works out for (Channels). I don't know what the situation was so I really don't want to comment on it," Shaffer said.

"Somebody's got to look at something. It's such a bad precedent. He's not the only kid that's done it, but it's a tough thing."

Moving on

Mignery isn't too worried about any Xenia plays being passed on to Wayne players.

"We're going to do our thing," Mignery said. "Yes, there may be some knowledge going one way or the other. But it comes down to blocking and tackling and putting people in the right places."

He also said his team has turned the page, or at least it will after tonight's game.

"Our team will be on the field with Martin Channels or without," Mignery said. "We'll be out there just like somebody got hurt. ... I think our kids really rallied around the adversity.

"In this day and time where loyalty for some people, most people, it means a lot, but for some people it's a fleeting thing.

"We see it in the college ranks and it drifts on down into the high school level to a program. Some people just choose to go in a different direction."

Wearing Wayne's black and red, the Channels boys will be going in a direction counter to friends, ex-teammates and those who attend school with their other brothers.

"I've got a lot of friends in Xenia; half of them are on my side," Channels said. "I'm going to come out and do my thing."

Interesting article on why Channels transferred.....

link

9/24/05

With Channels wearing street clothes, the Warriors held off the Buccaneers 29-22 in front of 5,000 at Cox Stadium.

The 6-foot, 310-pound defensive tackle and his brother transferred from Xenia to Wayne nine days ago. They wore jerseys but no pads in the Dayton Daily News Game of the Week.

"They wanted to investigate me to see if I did everything right," Channels said. "It basically held me out for this week."

Wayne High School was informed Friday by the Ohio High School Athletic Association that Xenia filed a request to check out Channels' residency. That process will finish early next week.

"I'm not going to jeopardize anything our kids have done," Wayne coach Jay Minton said. "If the state's looking into it, that's good enough for me."

Channels saw a good game. Wayne (4-1) took a 26-3 lead as quarterback Alex Earley dove in from a yard out with four seconds left before halftime.
Earley ran for 112 yards and completed 15 of 31 for 198 yards with touchdown passes to Joe Gilford and Jon Johnson. Gilford added 86 yards rushing.

Xenia (2-3) rallied behind Stanten Hall (111 yards rushing), whose score pulled the Bucs within 26-9. Wayne's Josh Fickert's third field goal made it 29-9. Bucs QB Josh Cousins led a 14-play, 75-yard drive capped by a Zach Furlong TD catch.

"It was a tale of two halves," Minton said. "We have to learn to play 48 minutes. I give them credit, too. Xenia is always noted for its great defense."

Xenia's next drive ended with an interception off a dropped pass — a problem all night. But the Bucs capitalized off a fumble to make it 29-22 with 3:00 left on an Alfonzo Horton touchdown catch. Wayne recovered an onside kick and ran out the clock.

"I think we waited too late," Xenia coach Ed Mignery said. "I'm very disappointed in the first half. The second half, things started going our way."

Minton wasn't too upset Channels didn't play. "I think it was kind of justice," Minton said. "I don't know that it was a good thing that Martin play in this game anyway. . . . I don't think it was good to play against his old teammates."

Minton also credited his defense, which was mostly solid without Channels.

"We're 4-1 and he hasn't played a down of football for us yet," Minton said. "I'm not taking anything away from him. That's what I'm saying about our kids."
