Investigator to study Channels' move to Wayne

By Mark Gokavi
Dayton Daily News

Recruiting allegations have spurred the state high school athletic association to investigate the transfer of Martin Channels from Xenia to Wayne.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association originally approved the transfer of Martin and brother Lamar Channels after affidavits were signed on Sept. 16.
The senior football players dressed but did not play against Springfield South that night. Last Friday, the brothers did not dress as the Warriors played at Xenia.

"We are conducting an investigation based on new information that was brought forward to us last week," Bob Goldring, the OHSAA's director of information, said Monday. "Some recruiting allegations have been forwarded to us and we are launching an investigation on the recruiting end of things.
"We did not tell (Wayne) not to play him on Friday. It appears they were proactive in not playing him based on, if something did turn up, it could cause forfeits.

"We have a private investigator that's been hired. Hopefully, this can be wrapped up quickly, as early as this week, but it just depends on what the investigator is able to turn up."

Channels is eligible, but Wayne football coach Jay Minton said Friday he did not want to risk anything the Warriors (4-1) have done so far.

Xenia football coach Ed Mignery said Friday night some officials at his school did ask the OHSAA to investigate certain aspects of Channels' transfer.

Martin Channels, a 6-foot, 310-pound defensive tackle, has drawn interest from several Mid-American Conference colleges. A team captain at Xenia, he withdrew from Xenia on Sept. 14 and enrolled at Wayne the next day.
Channels is the second Xenia football player to transfer to Wayne in the past year. Donnie Evege transferred after football last season.

OHSAA bylaws state, "the term 'recruit' shall mean the use of influence by any person connected or not connected with the school to secure the transfer of a prospective student-athlete."

Goldring said that could include school administrators, students, alumni, fans, parents, boosters or others.

"In this case there was enough information forwarded from credible sources that we felt it was necessary to conduct an investigation using an investigator," Goldring said. "I think it was because of the uniqueness of the case, (the communities basically) being next door and in the same conference."

Wayne hosts Beavercreek (1-4) Friday night.

OHSAA: No recruiting in Channels' transfer

Defensive tackle will play for Wayne tonight

By Mark Gokavi
Dayton Daily News
The state high school association found no violation of recruiting bylaws by Wayne High School in the transfer of Martin and Lamar Channels from Xenia.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association announced Thursday that an investigator ruled the Channels' transfer to Wayne followed all OHSAA regulations regarding proper residence and that the high school didn't recruit.

"We knew we didn't do anything wrong," Wayne football coach Jay Minton said of the recruiting suspicions. "That was so false. I know some people say that because kids (transfer) in here, they say we recruit," Minton said. "But we don't do that."

OHSAA Commissioner Dan Ross called Wayne school officials Thursday morning.

"Our independent investigator has filed his report and he has found no violations," Ross said in a press release.

"We appreciate the cooperation of both schools in the case and are satisfied that the investigation was thorough and complete."

Martin Channels, a 6-foot, 310-pound Division I recruit, was a team captain at Xenia. He and his brother transferred Sept. 15, but the seniors have not yet played for the Warriors.

That will change tonight when the Warriors (4-1) play host to Beavercreek (1-4).

"I'm ready to play," Channels said. "I always started and never missed a game my whole high school career. It was kind of hard (to watch). I had to stick to it."

Minton said Channels, a defensive tackle, will play but the amount of plays isn't set.

"He's been practicing with us for a couple weeks," Minton said. "He's ready to go, champing at the bit. He's in our rotation. We try to keep our D-line as fresh as we can. Part of (each player's time) is according to how they play.

"Everybody wants to play but we have a great group of guys that think of the team first. I had one player tell me, 'Coach, I really want to play.' He said, 'If he's better than me, I understand.' It's a very delicate situation."

The Channels brothers were previously approved for eligibility when a notarized "Bona Fide Residence Affidavit" was signed by their parents.
Late last week, the OHSAA received information that the Channels were influenced to transfer.

"When we receive detailed information from credible sources that there may have been a violation of the OHSAA bylaws, we will investigate," Ross said.
"That was the situation here, and I'm pleased that this one turned out positively."

Wayne (6-1) vs. Centerville (7-0)

When: 7:30 p.m. today

Where: Heidkamp Stadium, Huber Heights

Radio: WONE-AM (980), WCWT-FM (101.5), WOXR-FM (97.7)

2004 result: Centerville, 35-27

Outlook: Yes, the game will be in Heidkamp. After contemplating a move to bigger Welcome Stadium, Wayne's fans sought to keep the home-field advantage. Big computer points are on the line. A win over Centerville (or at Northmont in Week 9 plus a win over Sidney in any case) could mean a return to the playoffs. The game with the Elks also likely will decide the GWOC East champion. Centerville has the league's best defense (191 yards and 8-point average). The Warriors have the best offense (419 yards and 36-point average). After sitting out last week's win at Fairmont with a shoulder injury, Wayne QB Alex Earley is planning to play. He leads an offense that moves the ball passing (to Billy Viers, Joe Gilford, Dan Snyder and others) and running (Earley, Gilford, Donnie Evege and others). The Elks have dominated defensively and typically use the triple option, field position and special teams to control teams. Last year, the Elks scored four TDs against Wayne after getting the ball deep in the Warriors' territory. Ben Hemenway and Dan Drake have shared the QB spot lately while Jason Combs and James Cravens have picked up tough yards inside. The Elks are in good position to host a D-I, Region 4 playoff spot. After winning at Northmont, a victory at Wayne would solidify the Elks as the area's best team. There's a chance all three teams could make the playoffs and fans may be treated to another matchup involving these teams. Wayne coach Jay Minton is 4-3 against Centerville, winning four straight before the Elks' victory last season. Centerville coach Ron Ullery, who has been on the Elks' staff since the mid-1970s, is 1-4 as a head coach against Wayne

WOW! Wayne beats Centerville 38-0

Centervilles qb was injuried, but based on their offense being out of the option and such, shouldn't be a valid excuse for that lopsided of a lose. By a few accounts Channels looked impressive.

Wayne dominates Elks, 38-0

Warriors claim GWOC East title, enhance playoff hopes with convincing victory

HUBER HEIGHTS | If there wasn't a blueprint on how to beat Centerville, Wayne provided one Friday night

The Warriors provided 8,000 fans at Heidkamp Stadium with a complete and dominant victory.
The only question after Wayne's 38-0 victory over previously unbeaten and state-ranked Centerville was could the Warriors play any better.
"I don't think so," Wayne coach Jay Minton said. "I hate to say that. We'll always find something, hopefully. Good teams do. To beat a Centerville team that's as well coached as they are, then you have to play pretty darn good and we did. Everything was going our way."
The Warriors (7-1) won the GWOC Eastern Division with a 6-0 record. Previously No. 2 in the Dayton Daily News Division I ratings, Wayne will leapfrog ex-No. 1 Centerville (7-1).
Wayne's Region 4 playoff chances were boosted dramatically, pocketing the Elks wins as second-level points. The Warriors took a victory lap for earning their fourth conference title in five seasons. Wins over Northmont and Sidney could mean Wayne's first home playoff game.
"We'll relish this win right here," Wayne quarterback Alex Earley said. "Let us bask in it and then we'll start preparing on Monday."
The Warriors scored on their first possession, overcoming two penalties and a third-and-16. Joe Gilford's 3-yard TD catch set the tone.
Centerville did itself no favors, committing at least one penalty on three of its four first-half drives. After pinning Wayne deep, the Warriors responded with an 8-play, 94-yard drive.
Earley's 26-yard TD pass to Billy Viers with 1:04 left made it 14-0.
"The one thing you have to do with Centerville is you have to get up on them," Minton said. "And the one right before half, you've got to go up two scores of them. They will come back and score on you, usually."
It didn't happen this time. The closest the Elks got to Wayne's end zone was the 24-yard line.
"Our offense is not the type of offense that can make too many errors when a defense plays you as tough as they did," Ullery said. "And on top of that, we get some penalties at inopportune times in the first half and lay the ball on the ground. Then it just starts snowballing.
"But give them the credit. . . I don't know if they played as well as they can play, but they played 38 points better than us tonight, I'll give them that."
Wayne's dominance was staggering. The Warriors had 426 yards of offense and 21 first downs. Defensively, Wayne held Centerville to 11 first downs and 155 yards rushing on 46 attempts (3.37 average). Lamarr Cook recovered two Elks fumbles.
Earley completed 21 of 31 passes for 263 yards and three touchdowns, adding 50 yards rushing. Viers had eight catches for 110 yards.
The Elks got 82 yards rushing from James Cravens. Ben Hemenway played sparingly on defense, and was withheld from offense because of what Ullery called a "mistake." Dan Drake played quarterback, but couldn't find much room to run.
"This gets us closer and closer to the playoffs," said Wayne's Martin Channels, who helped shut down Centerville's triple option. "It's a big win for the team."
