Copley at Green

What, when, where: Suburban League game, 7 p.m., Green Memorial Stadium, 1737 Steese Road, Green. Call 330-896- 7544.

Records: Copley 4-1, 1-1; Green 4-1, 2-0.

What to watch: Can Copley bounce back from last week's decisive loss to Tallmadge? Can Green use last week's come-from- behind win over Wadsworth as an impetus? Copley needs to find a way to create running room for Delone Carter. Green needs to find a way to keep Carter on the sidelines. Green needs to find a way to fully utilize the talents of Corey Welch. Copley needs to find a way to minimize Welch's touches. The respective quarterbacks, Copley's Jason Borchik and Green's Kade Wagner, need to have time to make plays, and neither defense can tolerate multiple turnovers.

FWIW.. Carter started at Hoban but in Freshman year saw Sutton was going to be the man for the next three years .. so he transferred to Copley... where he certainly did very very well for himself...

WADSWORTH - Copley senior running back Delone Carter makes carrying the football look so easy.
His running style is a pleasure to watch. He's fluid, graceful and elusive in the open field, but he also can use his strength to run directly through a would-be tackler.
Friday night at Wadsworth, Carter ran every which way, amassing 375 yards and four touchdowns on 25 carries in a 47-15 Suburban League win for the Indians (5-2 overall, 2-2).
It was the second time this season that Carter has exceeded the 300-yard mark.
How good was it for Carter on Friday night?
He had 226 yards at halftime and 304 yards and three touchdowns after his 78-yard run on Copley's first play of the second half, with 8:20 left in the third quarter. The score helped give the Indians a 33-7 lead.
``The coaches put it in our minds this week that our backs were against the wall,'' Carter said of the Indians' two-game losing streak. ``We knew we had to come out fighting.''
And to show his full range of talents, Carter caught a 51-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Jason Borchik. And he also registered a sack as a linebacker.
Carter did it all.
``What can you say about the kid, he's just a great player,'' Copley coach Dan Boarman said. ``But we have a great bunch of kids who hate to lose.''
Is Carter the area's best back?
``I want to be considered the best, but everyone has their own opinion so I just have to go out there, trust myself and play as hard as I can,'' Carter said.
Wadsworth coach Greg Dennison has been around the sport a long time and has seen some special players in his days. Dennison was impressed with Carter, a Syracuse recruit.
``He's a great back, but we didn't hit him,'' Dennison said. ``When you don't hit a great back, he's even greater.''
For the Grizzlies, (4-3, 1-3), and Copley for that matter, Friday night's game was a must-win as far as the Suburban League race was concerned. Tallmadge is unbeaten at 4-0 in the league after beating Barberton on Friday night.
Now, the Grizzlies can only hope for some kind of miracle to stay in contention for the league title. Wadsworth's final three games are against Tallmadge, Highland and Revere.
``We still have a lot to play for,'' Dennison said. ``We'll regroup, and we'll be better for this.''
Meanwhile, as Carter was leading Copley's offense, the entire defensive unit did an effective job in limiting the Grizzlies' big plays.
Linemen Mike Nitz, A.J. Meyer, Joe Matesevac and Virgil Walker, linebackers Chase Klingenstein, Rico Binford, Nick Towns, Drew Miller and Walt Harris and defensive backs David Arnold, Nick Louis and Utomhin Okoh allowed just one touchdown through three quarters.
The unit also scored a touchdown, as Okoh returned an interception 75 yards with 1:01 left in the second quarter to enable the Indians to hold a 26-7 halftime lead.
Grizzlies running back Dru Jones rushed for 133 yards on 20 carries, and quarterback Scott Saylor scored Wadsworth's two touchdowns on short runs.

Revere at Copley

What, when, where: Suburban League game, 7 p.m., Copley Stadium, 3807 Ridgewood Road, Copley. Call 330-644- 4833.

Records: Revere 4-3, 3-1; Copley 5-2, 2-2.

What to watch: Let's face it. The league race is over. So this game is more about computer points, bragging rights and ownership of the Bell Trophy, a tradition begun shortly after the league's inception in 1966. Revere is one of the hottest teams in Summit County, knocking off Cloverleaf and Green the last two weeks to climb into sixth place in Division III, Region 9. Copley, despite suffering back-to-back losses to Tallmadge and Green the last two weeks of September, is less than one point out of the eighth and final playoff spot in highly competitive Division II, Region 5. With Delone Carter running wild, Revere defenders such as Jamie Mackie, Louie Clark and Dan Zarkovacki will have their hands full. Copley has won the last three meetings, but Revere has won eight of the past 14.

COPLEY - Copley turned to its star for the decisive play to beat Suburban League rival Revere 23-20 Friday night.

With Revere leading 20-16 and attempting to run out the clock with less than three minutes left, Copley senior linebacker Nick Towns came up with his second interception of the game, this one giving the Indians the ball at their 45-yard line.

``We just keep coming back and showing people that we're no joke,'' Towns said. ``I just did what I could do to help our team. I saw the ball in the air and just went and got it.''

Copley (6-2, 3-2) wisely relied on senior running back Delone Carter from that point. Carter took a handoff on the next play and dazzled the home crowd with a run that won't soon be forgotten.

Carter seemingly made the entire Minutemen defense miss in the backfield, eventually breaking free down the right sideline for a 41-yard run down to the 14-yard line with just two minutes left.

As was the trend all night, the Revere defense was stout, forcing a fourth-and-3 from the 6. But a Revere player jumped offside, and Carter leaped over the top two plays later from the 1 to account for the winning margin with just 57 seconds left.

Revere failed to attain a first down on its final drive.

``They sent everyone after me the whole game, so I knew I had to make someone miss,'' Carter said. ``Nick had a big interception, and that gave me the fuel I needed to get it done.''

``Delone never gives up,'' Towns said. ``He's the number one back in the state, and he always plays like it's his last game.''

Until Towns' interception, Revere (4-4, 3-2) appeared to have the game put away, thanks to a remarkable all-around game by senior running back/defensive back/returner Tom Romito. Senior receiver Derek Muffley snagged Romito's halfback pass and took it 43 yards for a touchdown to put Revere ahead 20-16 with 8:09 left.

Revere largely dominated the first half, but junior wide receiver/free safety David Arnold kept the Indians in it with two spectacular plays of his own.
On Revere's second play of the game, Arnold picked off a pass and returned it 77 yards to give Copley a 7-0 lead.

Romito, who also tallied a fourth-quarter interception, capped a 58-yard drive with a 1-yard plunge to even the score. The Minutemen then delivered another big play, as senior quarterback Corey Kurtz found senior receiver Dan Zarkovacki streaking down the sideline for a picturesque 52-yard touchdown pass with just 0.6 seconds remaining in the first half.

Arnold struck again for the Indians early in the second half. Senior quarterback Jason Borchik hit Arnold on a post for a 74-yard touchdown pass.

Copley's Carter: 4,715 yards and counting

Thursday, October 27, 2005 Tim Rogers

Plain Dealer Reporter
Copley's Delone Carter will bid adieu to Medina County on Friday, and probably not a minute too soon as far as three of the county's seven high schools are concerned.

It is common for high school football players to rush for more than 1,000 yards during a season. Carter, Copley's dynamic senior, has a chance to exceed that mark against Medina County schools alone.

In games against Wadsworth and Cloverleaf, the 5-10, 200-pound Carter has rushed for 813 yards and scored 11 touchdowns. That means he needs just 188 yards on Friday to reach the 1,000-yard mark when the Indians close out their regular season against Highland. Carter, who has made an oral commitment to Syracuse University, is averaging 240 yards per game.

"And he has earned every one of those yards," said Copley coach Dan Boarman. "I'll give you an idea of how hard Delone works. After we get through with practice, he takes a football and runs the track for conditioning. The other day after practice I went into the coaches' office to change clothes. Delone was still running when I came out to go home."

Carter, who did not play the final 10 minutes of last week's 42-14 victory over Cloverleaf after gaining a season-high 438 yards, has now rushed for 4,715 yards in his 22 games at Copley.

"I've been coaching a long time, and he's the best running back I've ever coached against," said Cloverleaf's Kevin Gault. "He does so many things so well."

Thanks for the info but wasn't the high school message board created to keep track of weekly stats for high school kids and potential recruits? Especially those who have yet to receive any serious interest from OSU like Carter, Saine, the St. X RB, and most of the Warren kids?

Kanton, the high school board was created to post score updates. Many times with players on the recruiting forum, their stats weren't there or they didn't have any stats. Their threads were being cluttered with info about their high school teams and results as opposed to how they were doing on the field/their recruiting. So, the way I take it, is that player performances can still be recorded in the recruiting threads, but team info goes in the High School Forums.
As far as the players and interest received... A lot of times it is speculative, especially for recruits in younger classes (like the ones that you brought up minus Carter). Threads will be started about guys that tOSU may have interest in during the next recruiting classes. They will be closed down most of the time when interest isn't there.

The warren Kids you are talking about have been receiving OSU interest. There are 6 of the 7 Juniors from Warren on this board getting interest and letters from OSU. They are giving serious interest in 4 of the 6 that are getting interest.

OSUBucks22 and Warren, thank you for your posts. I'd like to apologize for cluttering Carter's thread but I feel the need to further explore this issue. I will try to be as brief as possible and would like to let everyone know that the tone of this post is meant to be humble and it's only my opinion. My irritation with this issue lies in the fact that there doesn't seem to be any consistency with threads that are kept open and threads that are considered closed. For example if you look at the Joe Thomas thread, bucknuts44820 states it's time to wrap up the thread, despite the fact that Thomas has an OSU offer and several people "in the know" claim it's not a done deal. Then when you look at a recruit like Carter, who has been committed for some time to another school, who never had an OSU offer, and who there is no "buzz" about, bucknuts44820 continues to keep the thread open and with all do respect makes a very Bucknutsesque post about why OSU hasn't offered Carter. I see other posts that are kept open with high school statistical updates for recruits who probably are not going to get an OSU offer, for example someone like Mike Hartline. It just makes the board seem a little less clean and tight as it should be, in my opinion. Also if you look at a thread like Chris Wells you'll see that there are at least 3 posts stating that Wells rushed for 300 some odd yards this past weekend. I think it's sufficient to have his weekly stats posted once, I don't think we need to have an article from The Plain Dealer, The Beacon Journal, The Repository, poster X, etc. all saying recruit X rushed for 327 yards this weekend. Also I feel that articles that speak of teams but offer a single blurb about a recruit should probably be relegated to the high school board. An article about the Massillon football team that has a single sentence saying something like, Andrew Dailey is the hard-hitting leader of the defense, should be in the high school forum as it offers little insight into recruiting. Finally, for under classman (like the Warren kids) it's nice to hear they are having great seasons but let's establish that they are on OSU's radar or OSU is on their radars before we start giving updates about how much recruit X benches. If they're getting legitimate interest from OSU that's awesome but let's here about that interest and not just that recruit X is having a great year. There are hundreds of recruits out there who have done impressive things but not all of them are going to receive interest from the Buckeyes. These are all just my opinions about things that could potentially improve this board. I appreciate everything that people contribute to this board and want it to continue to be the best source for free OSU recruiting info out there.
