'06 OH WR/TE Jeff Cumberland (Illinois signee)

tOSU seems to take one borderline academic kid a year, could this be our one this year? He definatly seems to have the size, flexibility and athletic ability to make it at tOSU. I have even seen quotes from JT that admissions or whomever allow him one "academic project" scholorship a year.

Glenville vs. Columbus Brookhaven

What, when, where: Nonleague game, 1 p.m., Byers Field, Ridge Road and Day Drive, adjacent to Parmatown Mall. Call 216-541-8326 or 216-268-6000.

Records: Both teams are 1-0.

What to watch: Everything -- just don't look away in the opening game of the new Charity Game doubleheader. Last year's Division II state champion, Brookhaven, had a cakewalk last week in a 48-7 victory over Chillicothe. Brookhaven has an outstanding quarterback in Mike McGee, talented running backs in Markell Lacy and Rodney Holmes, and a solid receiving duo of Jeff Cumberland and Kameron Taylor. However, Brookhaven is now in Division I, and Glenville is one of the top big schools in the state. Quarterback Arvell Nelson, running back Bruce Frieson and receivers Raymond Small, Bryant Milligan and Daven Jones had their way in a 32-0 opening-week win over Mentor. The Tarblooders' speed gives them the edge.

Went to the Brookhaven - Centennial game tonight. Left after the 3rd qtr score was 42-0 and could have easily been worse than that. Anyway Cumberland had 3 TD's on 3 catches for probably close to 135 yards. His 1st and 3rd catch he was able to show off his speed. The boy has a second gear. Attitude wise there was one play I thought he could of showed a little more character. On the 3rd Td he was gone down the sideline for something like 75 yards, but slowed down for the last 15 to let a saftey get somewhat close and then flipped the ball to him after the TD. I was hoping to see coach say something about that as he came off the field , but instead was greeted with a high five and pat on the back. Our coaches could straighten that out though. Jeff also was used as a rush end on 3rd and longs although he never really did anything on D. He looked good on kickoff coverage though.

I have a feeling that Cumberland is going to be one of the kids that got away (ala Wheelright) because of grades, as I hear that he would like to be a Buck through rumors.
But believe me when I say that he is not short on talent, he will be a major D1 player.
