'07 FL RB Chris Rainey (Florida Verbal)

yeah 21, stop being so conservative...

back to Chris Rainey...does Noel Devine transferring out of state open the door for this kid to be the top back in the state in '07?

I think so. I just dont know if people will respect him because he is not a RB that can go up the gut a lot. He is very durable, fast, and smart and he can break tackles. The problem is his size. All the kida from Lakeland run into that problem. LHS always turns out top notch talent but they are never "fit" to their position.

I don't get why everyone claim Devine to be so much better. You guys do realize that Devin actually averaged LESS yards per carry than Rainey right? Keep in mind that all you've seen are highlight tapes. I know Devine's highlight tapes might be more entertaining(he did face terrible tackling defenders), but keep in mind that despite how much more impressive he seemed on the highlights, he must have been at LEAST that much more pedestrian in games not shown on the highlights in order to average LESS yards per carry than Rainey.

Rainey also faces much better competition. Keep in mind that Devine would've never been able to break so many tackles as a 5'8 160lb guy if the tacklers weren't absolutely horrible. Rainey's tacklers were way better, and he used pretty much purely his instincts and speed to get that 12 ypc average while Devine relied very heavily on tacklers missing extremely easy tackles(some as simple as reaching out and grab his jersey).

lets just say this... they are BOTH phenomenal athletes, and I think we would be more than ecstatic to get either of them to come to Ohio State. I am yet to be convinced that we have an ice cubes chance in hell for either of them...

what? no one claimed anything like that...I simply asked if this meant that Rainey had a clear shot at being the top back in FL in '07. I don't live in Florida, nor do I follow Florida high school football that closely. I simply know that from reading these boards everyone seems to have high regard for Devine, and equally high regard for Rainey. If you can't serve up an opinion without taking a shot at another kid, then don't say anything. If you want to promote Rainey, that's fine, but you are toeing the line with regard to your comments about Devine...I think Devine deserves a little more credit than you are giving him (i.e. "Devine relied very heavily on tacklers missing extremely easy tackles.")

Well I am not saying devine is horrible. I just found that people talk about him like he is God and most people even on other forums bash Rainey and say he can never be close. There are a lot of things other than football that form my opinions of Devine. I heard rumors of him having kids, school troubles, and so on. granted they are rumors so I will take them somewhat lightly, but never the less, people have been trying to say all over the internet that Devine runs a 4.1 and that he could shoot fireballs from his eyes and lightning bolts from his butt. Also, Lakeland doesnt really have a polished o-line. Most of the linemen in those reels are sophs and jrs. We only had one senior consistant starter on that line and then a senior who played both ways but mainly as a DT which got him an offer from FSU (Kendrick Stewart)

As for OSU getting Rainey, you prolly have a good chance. LHS always has amazing programs but never was a school for churning out stand out talent. The coach, Bill Castle, does very well making his players perfect as a team more so than as individual talent. I am sure Rainey would pee himself to play for the likes of a Big Ten school like OSU, UM, Iowa, and so on. There is a good chance one of the big 3 in Florida could get him, but with all the talent at WR/RB that Miami and FSU took the only logical choice would be UF. So dont lose hope. I hope he comes to the Big Ten. I see a Desmond Howard, Ginn mix in this kid.

Wad, I wasn't talking specifically to you, I was talking to the guys who say something like "Devine's just on a whole other level". I simply pointed out that all indications are that Rainey may just be the better back. Of course I could give Devine more credits like his amazing vision, excellent acceleration, and wonderful body control, but that's been stated so many times already. The purpose of my post was not to give an analysis of Devine's game; the purpose of my post was the point out what people seem to NOT realize or consider enough, and that's that he was very pedestrian in a few games against better competition that were not shown on the highlight, which resulted in his YPC average LOWER than Rainey's.

dingyibvs and LHSDreadnaught -

Thanks for clarifying...I just wanted to make sure that you all weren't trying to pump up Rainey by taking Devine down a notch. I am certainly hoping that you will continue to give us some input about Rainey during the Fall.
