Ryan Kerrigan: Boiler Superman
Not fond of nickname; Hope calls it accurate.
By Pete DiPrimio
of The News-Sentinel

Ryan Kerrigan could do without the Superman nickname. Seriously. Purdue's senior defensive end has more important things to think about ? starting with Saturday's game at No. 11 Ohio State ? than a reference to a comic book superhero.

?I don't own any Superman shirts,? he said. ?It's flattering, but it's not a nickname I want to say, like I'm Superman. It's embarrassing. I don't want to seem like a cocky guy.?

Perhaps it's his personality. Off the field Kerrigan is easygoing and relaxed, a guy who enjoys golfing (even though he struggles to break 100), fishing and going to the movies. On the field, ?I kind of flip the switch. I'm more intense.?

Former teammate Mike Neal labeled Kerrigan Superman a couple of years ago, and the name stuck. If Kerrigan could choose his own comic book nickname, what would it be?

?I guess it would be Superman,? he said with a laugh. ?He has the best of it all.?

Kerrigan's best includes leading the Big Ten with 5.5 sacks and 14.0 tackles for loss, even though teams constantly game-plan to stop him, ranging from double teams to running plays away from him.
