Too early to look at sophomore football prospects? Not in Andrew Dailey's case. The promising Massillon standout is already receiving mail from major programs. Bill Greene recently had a chat with Dailey to learn more.

In 2005, the Massillon Tigers will be hoping to rebound from what has been two sub-par seasons. The Tigers, coached by Rick Shepas, are not accustomed to rebounding from losing seasons, and all indications are that next year could see the Tigers return to being one of the top programs in Ohio.

One of the top returnees for Shepas is sophomore safety Andrew Dailey. Dailey is listed as one of the top sophomores in the state by Ohio High magazine. The 6-3, 212-pound Dailey, who started every game but one, is known as a big hitter and is drawing the attention of college recruiters.

"I'm getting letters from Purdue, Kansas, Boston College, Notre Dame, Michigan and Ohio State, as well as others. I stopped at Michigan last summer, and I've been to games at Notre Dame and West Virginia. Coach Shepas took me to the Ohio State-Michigan game last season, and that was great," Dailey said.

As one of the top players in a school known for success, Dailey said the Tigers are working hard to turn around their fortunes. When asked about his goals for 2005, Dailey was quite direct and honest.

"We need to make the playoffs and have a deep run in the playoffs. We need to start beating some of the best teams in Ohio. We especially need to start beating Canton McKinley again," Dailey said. "For my personal goals, I'd like to lead the team in tackles. I'd also like to play wide receiver to show my athletic ability. I'll play both ways if that helps us win."

Andrew, who currently has a 3.5 grade average, loves playing at Massillon and enjoys playing for Rick Shepas.

"Playing at Massillon is great because of the tradition. Nothing compares to the Massillon-McKinley rivalry. There's nothing like running out of the tunnel before that game," Dailey said. "Coach Shepas is someone I like a lot. He moved me to safety from linebacker, because he believed in me. He cares about the players and wants what's best for us, not just when we're playing for him, but even after we leave school."

Since the end of the season, Dailey has been busy making himself a better player. His speed has improved dramatically and he hopes to get even faster.

"I worked out in Akron with Butch Reynolds for 10 sessions. We worked on getting faster and I can tell it's working. We started baseball workouts this week, and my 60 yard dash time is .4 faster than last year. I ran a 4.57 forty last summer and I'm hoping to lower that time this year," said Dailey. "I like playing baseball but I feel my future is in football. I've read a lot about Jerry Rice's work ethic and I try to follow what he's done off the field. On the field I try to play like John Lynch."

After a successful season on the freshman team, one might think the adjustment to varsity football would be difficult, but Dailey handled the transition just fine.

"The speed of the game was tough at first, but it got better. I played my best football the last four games. The game seemed to really slow down and I was feeling more comfortable. I can't wait for next season to start. We need to get Massillon football back to where it should be," Dailey said.

Andrew is good friends with another top sophomore football player, Devon Torrence of Canton South. They play summer baseball together and the two talk often, as they push each other to get better.

"Devon and I are close. We're always trying to see who can beat the other one. I raced him a couple years ago and beat him in about a 30 or 40 yard race. I'll never let him forget it either," Andrew said with a smile. "It would be neat if we could go to the same college some day. He's a great athlete."

Andrew Dailey is as mature a person as any sophomore you'll meet. He has a great attitude, as well as tremendous talent, and it appears he has a bright future in football. Dailey is a player that we will track very closely in 2005 at Ohio High magazine.

It may be only a matter of time before the scholarship offers start pouring in for Massillon Washington junior Andrew Dailey. Bill Greene caught up with Dailey for an update and an early top five.

Massillon's Andrew Dailey is listed as one of the top juniors in the state by Ohio High magazine. Dailey, 6' 3" 210 pounds, is a hard hitting safety for the Tigers who will also play wide receiver this season.

Dailey, who is also a fine baseball prospect, has been able to get around to a few football camps this summer.

"I've been to Michigan, Illinois, Indiana and Notre Dame," said Dailey. "I wanted to get to Ohio State but I was in a baseball tournament that week. I hope to get down there this fall for a game. I was at the jersey scrimmage in the spring."

Dailey ran an electronically timed 4.69 forty yard dash at the Michigan camp, and a hand timed 4.59 at Notre Dame. This speed, combined with size and strength, makes Dailey a top college prospect. He's just now beginning to name his favorites.

"I like Michigan, Illinois, Notre Dame, Virginia Tech and Ohio State," said Dailey. "At Michigan, I liked the atmosphere and they want me to come back for an open house. Coach Zook was real impressive at Illinois."

Andrew is playing summer baseball as well as working out with the football team. He's looking ahead to this season with optimism. The Tigers have a new coach, Tom Stacy, and Dailey thinks things will be better for Massillon.

"We're working hard to turn things around," said Dailey. "Coach Stacy has the total respect of our team. I like what he's doing. He talks about the Massillon tradition all the time. We're going to be more disciplined as a team. I like the attitude of our team. We're hoping to have a big season, get into the playoffs, and make a run.

"We have great senior leadership in Quentin Paulik, Antonio James, and Brett Huffman. I'll be playing safety again and hopefully more on offense at slot receiver. My receiver coach is Jeff Huffman and he's a great coach. He's telling me to be ready to play on offense. I hope to get the ball a lot."

Ohio High magazine has kept an eye on Andrew Dailey since he was a freshman, and he continues to get better every year. Duane Long, recruiting editor of Ohio High, wrote of Dailey - "Incredibly, played safety at this size. Reminds me of ex-Warren Harding standout Prescott Burgess."

Being compared to Burgess is pretty heady stuff for this junior, but with his skill level, combined with a great attitude, it's easy to see why Dailey is one of the top prospects in the class of 2007. Andrew Dailey is a player that we will track very closely at Ohio High in 2005.

Tom Stacey

Outside of Ohio State, the Cleveland Browns, and the Cincinnati Bengals, the head coaching spot at Massillon Washington High School might be the most visible coaching position in the state of Ohio. New coach Tom Stacey has kicked off his first season at Massillon, and Bill Greene was there yesterday to check it out.
</TD></TR><TR><TD colSpan=3>
The Massillon Tigers opened practice yesterday under new head coach Tom Stacy. Stacy, a former Akron U. assistant, is hoping to turn around this storied program after two losing seasons.

If today's effort is any indication, it would seem the Tigers are headed in the right direction.

I've been to practice at Ohio State and Akron, as well as most of the high schools in Stark County, but today's workout was as impressive as any I've seen. Coach Stacy is quite impressive as both a leader and a teacher to his troops. His enthusiasm and knowledge of the game stands out first and foremost.

"We're excited about the opportunity here," said Stacy. "There will be a lot of electricity in the air on opening night. We're expecting a sellout."

The Tigers open the season with a Thursday night game against Dover. Stacy will go into battle with some impressive weapons on his side. Many of his players are listed among the best in the state by Ohio High magazine.

One of the top players is three year starter Brett Huffman, a senior tight end. Huffman has accepted a scholarship offer to play college football at Duke and he should be a big factor for the Tigers in 2005.

Two other seniors appear to be flying under the radar, but are poised to have big years as well. Quentin Paulik has started at quarterback the past two seasons, but it seems his future will find him on the defensive side of the ball. At 6-3, 225, Paulik has the perfect size for an outside linebacker. Paulik also has great speed, evidenced by a 4.6 forty time. Senior tape at linebacker will determine how heavily will be recruited, but he's a player that college scouts are aware of.

Antonio James is another nice looking athlete. James (6-5, 245) has committed to play football at Illinois, but I don't think that will stop the Ohio States and the Michigans from watching his senior campaign very closely. James will play defensive end in college and has the frame that could carry 275 pounds comfortably. James is a player we will keep a close eye on at Ohio High magazine. I believe we have him rated too low.

Andrew Dailey is a player that has been featured in Ohio High since he broke into the Tiger lineup as a sophomore. Dailey (6-3, 215) is a hard hitting safety, and is clearly one of the top juniors in Ohio. Dailey will also play wide receiver for Massillon, and should have recruiters following his progress throughout his career. Dailey can run a 4.5 forty and had a great summer camp season.

Andrew is enjoying the new coaching staff at Massillon.

"Things are going great. The attitude of this team is really good," said Dailey. "We're looking forward to playing for Coach Stacy."

Sophomore running back K.J. Herring received a lot of reps today, and he appears to be ready to continue the fine tradition of great football players at Massillon. Herring, a state track qualifier, could see significant time for the Tigers in 2005.

Coach Stacy will count on seniors Lanelle Robinson, Dirk Dickerhoof, Rob Morris and others to lead the Tigers in 2005. Another weapon will be the strong leg of kicker Steve Schott, a sophomore. Schott is the top kicker in the sophomore class in Ohio and has a bright future at Massillon and beyond.

The atmosphere in Tigertown is totally different than the past two years. This team is responding to the teaching of Tom Stacy and a quite talented staff. This football team is disciplined and aggressive. Today's practice was structured to the minute, as each drill was scripted and executed by the clock. Even though today was the first day of practice the intensity approached a playoff level.

Speaking of playoffs, what are the chances of the Tigers returning to the playoffs? The schedule is brutal and the overall depth of this team is in question, but I would not be surprised to see this team get on a roll and march into the postseason in 2005. The Tigers just might be ready to restore the roar in Massillon.

Do you mind listing some of the other juniors he listed? For some reason, Ohio High doesn't come to the stores that Bucknuts says it should (Lennox B&N, Central Classroom OSU Bookstore). I'm guessing Torrence and Ben Martin are a bit higher, no?
