Massillon senior will attend Penn State

Massillon senior Andrew Dailey has given an oral commitment to continue his football career at Penn State University on scholarship.
Dailey, a 6-foot-2, 225-pound safety, helped the Tigers (13-2) reach the Division I state championship game last season and finish runner-up to Cincinnati St. Xavier.
At safety, Dailey led the Tigers with four forced fumbles, returning one for an 80-yard touchdown in the championship game. He had 55 solo tackles and assisted on another 26 tackles.
Dailey will move to outside linebacker this season, a position he is expected to play in college. He chose Penn State over scholarship offers from Florida, Illinois and Purdue.
Ohio State, Notre Dame, Michigan, Nebraska and Syracuse also showed interest.

Massillon's Dailey enjoys role as 'Hero' under icon
Area athlete is No. 2 at strong safety slot in Paterno's defense

Andrew Dailey was enjoying football at Massillon in 2006 and was getting looks from a variety of Division I colleges and universities.

While he was pondering his decision, then-equipment manager Jerry Vance suggested a school he hadn't considered.

''He told me that his son was at Penn State and loved it and I should check it out,'' Dailey said.

And Dailey did.

''When I went there, it just felt like home. It is a small town and there is nothing really around it like Columbus. Fall games are really special,'' Dailey said. ''It is a great place to play and had great academics, and it is a clean program.''

Dailey, a redshirt junior, has become a major component of the Nittany Lions defense, playing what is called ''the Hero.''

''The Hero is the strong safety position and now I'm No. 2 at that position, and it's a lot of fun to play. Hopefully, I will also be in the nickel package, where I played some last season,'' Dailey said.

PSU redshirt junior Dailey, hero against Indiana, to give up senior season

Redshirt junior safety Andrew Dailey, the hero of Penn State's win over Indiana on Saturday as he made a game-changing blocked punt, has decided not to return for his final year of eligibility.

Dailey is listed among the 18 seniors who will play their final home game Saturday against Michigan State. PSU spokesman Jeff Nelson confirmed that Dailey, who is on pace to graduate in December, will forgo his final season of eligibility.

Dailey suffered a stinger injury in week seven against Minnesota and said he has been battling some effects of that. He has been playing, mostly on special teams.

"I've been battling a lot of stingers," Dailey said after the Indiana game. "It's from the neck going back, you get a lot of nerves running down the back of my neck all the way down to my arm."

Dailey blocked a punt with the game tied at 24 late in the third quarter against Indiana, and teammate James Van Fleet scooped it up and returned it for a go-ahead TD that led the Lions to a 41-24 victory.

Dailey was named Big Ten co-Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday.

Dailey has 13 tackles in 10 games.
