'07 OH QB Clay Belton (Miami of Ohio Signee)

Mitchell Evans

I have seen Mitch play for the last few years and he is the real deal. Mitch is a legit 6'3 and probably 200-205. He ran a 4.49 forty at a passsing camp. Michell does not have the passing stats that some other area QB's have but his numbers are a product of the system he plays in. He will never have 40 passing attempts in a game like some other QB's. I believe that the college he chooses will determine what position he plays. He was all state as a safety last season. Ohio High School Magazine has a pretty good write up about him (#20 statewide). They say that he is the best QB in the state. I would like to see him to to Oxford because it would be cool to see him progress at the next level. I don't think OSU is actively pursuing him as a QB or safety.

why would you post this in the Clay Belton thread and not in the Mitchell Evans thread we have on BP?

Northmont QB Belton sidelined

Standout senior has broken thumb and will miss 'DDN' Game of the Week at Wayne.

CLAYTON ? A hit hasn't been delivered between Northmont and Wayne, but the Thunderbolts already have been thrown for a loss.
Northmont will be without quarterback Clay Belton Friday in the Dayton Daily News high school football Game of the Week at Wayne. The standout senior was diagnosed with a broken thumb on his left (throwing) hand. In a cast, he's expected to miss Northmont's next three games, then return.
"Judging by what the experts say, he'll hit the ground running and pick up where he left off," said Northmont coach Lance Schneider, whose team is 4-0 and ranked No. 8 in the state Division I rankings.
"If is was his other hand, we'd just pad it up and go. But the thumb and index finger are the two most important fingers to a quarterback. He just can't grip it without pain taking over."
Belton led the area in passing last year and is on most Midwest major college radars. He broke his thumb on a teammate's helmet last week against Miamisburg. Junior John Nussman took over and completed 14 of 19 passes for 207 yards and a TD in a 20-18 win. Nussman will start at QB while Belton recovers.
Ironically, A.J. Combest returns to Northmont's lineup. The senior gained over 1,300 yards last year, but broke a fibula last July and is yet to play.
"We lose star No. 1 and get back star No. 2," said Schneider.

Belton's surprise return sparks Northmont win

By Greg Billing

CLAYTON ? Halloween remains a few weeks away. But Northmont High School's football team pulled off some stunning trickery on Friday, especially in this day and age of Internet gossip.
The Thunderbolts fooled everyone into thinking sensational quarterback Clay Belton would miss his third straight game with an injured thumb on his throwing hand. From the hand cast before the game, the lineup with John Nussman at quarterback to Belton's clandestine pregame warmup in Northmont's gym, only four people knew that Belton would start. And Belton's presence help lead Northmont to a 27-7, must-win defeat of Troy in a Greater Western Ohio Conference matchup.
Troy coach Steve Nolan admitted he and his team were not ready for Belton.
"It was a little tricky. There was a little shock value," Nolan said. "Obviously, we didn't handle it very well."
Belton received medical clearance to play Monday. But Northmont coach Lance Schneider told only Belton, Belton's father and his own father, also a coach on the T-Bolts staff, that Belton would play. "This team just needed something to get them back in the mode we were in the first three weeks of the season," Schneider said.
Belton needed all of three passes to throw his eighth touchdown. That gave the Bolts (5-2, 1-1 GWOC North) a charge. He completed 20-of-36 passes for 253 yards and three interceptions. Brad Herr had 10 catches for 140 yards, and Nate Wilburn-Ogletree eight for 100. Northmont's defense also returned to early form. The Trojans had 156 yards on offense and just 44 rushing. Troy was averaging 332.
"Up front, we really dominated the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball," Schneider said. "That's not something you can normally do against Troy. They ran around and hit people. That's the Gang Green defense I know and love."
The Trojans (5-2, 2-1) managed just two first downs in the first half and generated just a third-quarter scoring drive despite intercepting three passes and recovering three fumbles.

Northmont hosted Glen Este but was not physical enough in a 28-14 loss. Wayne traveled down I-75 and had a quiet bus ride home after a 24-19 loss to Sycamore.
Glen Este (9-2) handled Northmont on both the offensive and defensive lines. The Trojans, using the wing-T offense, rushed for 249 yards on 59 carries. Donnie Talbott, a 6-foot, 230-pound fullback, ran 31 times for 134 yards and three touchdowns.
Northmont, which trailed 14-0 at halftime, could get little time for quarterback Clay Belton to throw the ball.
Glen Este, led by 6-5, 230-pound Matt Winegardner, kept pressure on him all night.
Belton was 8-of-15 passing for 81 yards and was sacked five times before leaving with an injury late in the third quarter.
Winegardner blocked two punts, one each in the second and fourth quarters, which led to Glen Este scores.
Northmont's scores came on a 1-yard run by A.J. Combest and a 4-yard pass from John Nussman to Rob Hathcock.
