'08 GA QB/ATH Deron Furr (Auburn Signee - Transfer to Memphis)

Carver Columbus quarterback nearly says yes to Auburn
DeRon Furr came oh so close to pulling the trigger.
The 6-foot-2, 205-pound quarterback seriously considered giving a commitment to Auburn during an on-campus visit on Sunday. Instead, Furr elected to put a decision on hold.
?I almost committed on Sunday, but something told me to wait a little longer and be patient,? said Furr, who also has offers from Duke, Tulane, Troy and The Citadel.
But Furr made it clear the Tigers are in the lead to land his signature in February.
?Auburn is my front-runner,? he said. ?I feel real welcome there and I related to the coaches real well. I also like the campus and the academics.?
Furr also likes the fact his home in Columbus is a short drive to Auburn.
?That?s real big,? Furr said.
Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville was a big hit with Furr, who wants to play quarterback on the collegiate level.
?Me and my mom talked to [Tuberville],? Furr said. ?He just wants me to come there and be the best player and athlete I can be.
?As soon as I come in, they said the job will be wide open and they?d want me to compete then.?

Furr could be the next Troy Smith...I think he should play at OSU for sure

Looking at all those others schools I think OSU would be a great fit for him. Look how Tressel developed Troy Smith from a back up QB to the best college player in the country last year. It will be interesting but his dad needs to bring him back to Buckeye Country no doubt!

ATH Deron Furr (6-3 217) of Columbus, GA committed to Auburn this summer and says he's still committed to the Tigers, but he plans to take several visits including one to Clemson. "They just recently got back involved," Furr said. "I talked to coach Napier about two or three weeks ago. They're recruiting me as a free safety." Furr also plans to visit Auburn, Alabama, Florida State and South Florida. He's not set any dates but might visit Auburn this weekend. Auburn and South Florida are recruiting him as a quarterback, Florida and Alabama as a free safety. "I like whichever position that will get me to the league," he said. "My Auburn commitment is real firm but I want to make sure I'm making the right decision." This season Furr rushed for 900 yards, passed for 1800 yards and accounted for 28 touchdowns.

AUBURN NOTEBOOK: Furr a no-show at practice Sunday | Opelika-Auburn News

Published: August 4, 2008

DeRon Furr keeps moving. But his latest move appears to have left his head coach in the dark.

Furr, a true freshman, enrolled early at Auburn to play quarterback. Then, after spring practice, he switched to defensive back.

Sunday, Furr was on the move again — although this time, no one seems entirely sure where he’s heading.

Furr didn’t attend Sunday’s practice, Auburn’s second preseason workout. Head coach Tommy Tuberville was evasive when asked about his whereabouts.

“Don’t know,” Tuberville said.

When a reporter repeated the question, Tuberville said, “I haven’t seen him.”

Furr was one of several defensive backs involved in a practice-field fight Saturday, during AU’s first preseason practice. After that scuffle, Furr spent the rest of Saturday’s practice on the sideline.

Furr ended spring practice fourth on the quarterback depth chart, then moved to defensive back over the summer. He is competing for playing time at second-team safety with fellow true freshmen Christian Thompson and Marcus Jemison and redshirt freshman Mike Slade.

DeRon Furr, who left the Auburn football team after a practice-field scuffle with teammate Zac Etheridge on the first day of fall camp, will transfer to Memphis, his father told The Birmingham News this morning.

DeRon Furr Sr. said his son chose Memphis over Florida State, Miami and Georgia Tech after they visited Memphis last weekend and met head coach Tommy West and defensive coordinator Tim Walton. Walton, like Furr, played at Carver High School in Columbus, Ga.

Furr, who was recruited at Auburn as a quarterback but switched to safety after spring practice, will play safety at Memphis, his father said.

Furr, who enrolled at Auburn in January, will redshirt this season as a transfer and will have four years of eligibility starting with the 2009 season.

Furr Sr. said he and his son "want to thank Auburn for the opportunity. We're going to move forward."
