'08 MD WR Kenny Tate (Maryland signee)

And that strikes me odd given our production of NFL receivers and DB's.

I think of a glamour school as a school that is known moreso for their image than for their performance. I do not mind in the least bit that THE Ohio State Buckeyes may not be known as being a glamour school. Up until the disaster in Glendale, and possibly even including that game, THE Ohio State Buckeyes were at the forefront in many, many glamourous categories. BCS appearances, BCS wins, most wins in a given time frame, yadda yadda yadda. If the fact that our coach wears a sweater vest and we don't exactly pimp our student athletes bothers a couple recruits, i.e. not glamourous enough, then good riddance. These recruits will look back on their choice knowing that they could have been. Ah well. That sounds like a Y.P., as Colin Cowherd would say. Your Problem.

With Stags' Dominance Comes Intense Attention and Competition

You're not likely to find Kenny Tate before or during a game running around the locker room, trying to get his teammates fired up. Usually, he is just sitting in front of his stall, quietly eating two jelly sandwiches on wheat bread before taking the field for pregame warmups.

DeMatha's star wide receiver and safety is likely to be the most-watched player on the field. He was named All-Met as a junior and has dozens of scholarships offers, with college recruiters drooling at his combination of size (6 feet 4), speed and agility.

5.) Is Maryland looking to add another running back to this class, or are they set with Gary Douglas?

Yes, they would like another I am sure with Lance [Ball] and Keon [Lattimore] being seniors. Heading the list is elite DeMatha athlete standout Kenny Tate, who UM is recruiting as a running back. Ralph loves big backs, and had Jason Crawford (6-foot-3) stayed eligible, he could have been the guy in his early years instead of Bruce Perry, or at least they would have platooned.

Tate is 6-foot-3 and a tremendous athlete/playmaker -- perhaps the greatest ever to come through the famed Hyattsville school. Florida and UM could be his top two, and the Terps have a very good shot.

Just as I'm watching the DeMatha game on my DVR, Tate really wasn't all that impressive. He showed some flash on offense but he was nearly non-existent on defense, where I watched him closely. He just appeared not very excited to get in on a tackle.

Baltimoresun.com's Matt Bracken on University of Maryland, local and national recruiting news? College football pick'em | Main

Tate, DeMatha fall in Herbstreit Challenge

Tate was blanketed all day by St. X defenders, often facing double-coverage. DeMatha quarterback Tom Chroniger tried to connect with Tate several times down the left side of the field, but was inches away each time.

The highlight of Tate's day was a 21-yard catch across the middle with three St. X defenders in the area. Other than that, it was a tough day for the entire DeMatha offense.

Tate got a couple carries, as well, but couldn't muster much. According to Keith Cavanaugh of TerrapinTimes.com, Maryland is looking at Tate as a running back. I'm far from a scout or analyst, but I have trouble seeing him playing tailback at the collegiate level, other than on a situational basis.

The debate on his college position has actually been between wide receiver and safety.

"I think he's going to be a pure wide receiver," said ESPN color analyst Tom Luginbill during the broadcast. "...he's got a physically imposing frame."

Tate's partner in the DeMatha defensive backfield, however, was extremely impressive. Jonathan Mason flew all over the field all day long. According to Rivals.com, Mason doesn't have any DI offers, but if that's true, I have to believe it'll change soon.

As for Tate, despite the fact that he (and the DeMatha offense) couldn't get much going from a statistical standpoint, he looks like the real deal at wide receiver. He's physical, has good speed and great hands.

This is definitely stating the obvious, but whatever DI school is lucky enough to land Tate is getting a complete player that can make an immediate impact.

DeMatha Star Headed For Big Things

POSTED: 7:29 pm EDT September 12, 2007

WASHINGTON -- DeMatha High School football receiver Kenny Tate is really good. So good, he's known as one of the top high school prospects in the country.

DeMatha played its first game this season on the national stage and because Tate is so talented, the opposing team double covered him and didn't allow him to score. But last Saturday, in a DeMatha victory, Tate scored his first touchdown of the season.

When Tate touches the ball, it's electric. In an instant, No. 6 can score six. At 6 feet 4 and 220 pounds, with skills that will make your jaw drop, Tate can pretty much punch his ticket to any college program in the country.

Count the contenders -- Florida, Maryland, Penn State, Illinois, Ohio State, Notre Dame and Tennessee.

There's been some debate about which position Kenny Tate (wide receiver, running back, safety) should play in college. Which do you feel is the best fit for him? Is he an instant impact guy in college? Any sense of where he could end up?

I've been fortunate enough to cover Kenny Tate since his sophomore year at DeMatha. If I were to predict what position he will play in college, it would be either wide receiver or safety, but he's the kind of talent that could play both. I don't think he'll play running back because he's built more for a wide receiver (6 feet 4, 215 pounds), but Coach Bill McGregor likes to use him occasionally out of the backfield because he's so dangerous when he touches the ball. Last weekend he only carried the ball once, but it was a 92-yard touchdown run.

Kenny Tate is definitely an instant impact guy in college. His best season statistically at DeMatha was during his sophomore year (24 receptions, 529 yards, four TDs; seven rushing TDs) when he was a relative unknown. Now defenses key on him and he doesn't get the ball as much as he used to, and DeMatha has so many weapons that Tate doesn't need to win games by himself. However, with less attention on him next year I can see him having a freshman season similar to what we are seeing this year with Arrelious Benn at Illinois. Tate is just that good, regardless of where he is ranked on various recruiting Web sites.

As far as next year is concerned, trying to guess where Kenny Tate will end up is like trying to predict who will get the Republican nomination for the 2008 presidential race. Tate is taking his time and I wouldn't be surprised if he made the announcement at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl this January in front of a national audience. But if I were to make an educated guess, it would be either Florida or Maryland. He's also talented enough to make either school's basketball team and see the floor as a freshman, but that discussion can be left for another time.

Status quo for Kenny Tate
DeMatha wide receiver/safety Kenny Tate has been fairly tight-lipped about his recruitment, but for good reason -- there's not much to report. He has unofficially visited Maryland and Florida but hasn't made an official visit to any school just yet.

According to Stags head coach Bill McGregor, Tate's been 100 percent focused on his high school season, bumping recruiting to the backburner. I caught up with McGregor earlier this week to check in on Tate's season and recruiting picture.

How has Tate performed this year?

"He?s done very well. He?s playing both ways -- wide receiver, running back, safety, kick and punt returns."

What position do you think he projects best at for college?

"I don?t know. He?s so versatile. I think he could be a wide receiver, a defensive back, a big running back. He?s tall, so I don?t know. He might even grow into a linebacker."

You've coached multiple players in the NFL, in addition to several more DeMatha alums that currently dot DI rosters. Where does Tate stack up with past DeMatha greats?

"He?s as good as anyone I?ve ever coached. He's a great kid, a great human being, a great person. He's focused on academics. He's very low key and comes from a great family."

What have you discussed with him regarding recruiting?

"Truthfully, we haven?t really talked about it. Basically we?re talking about winning the next ball game. My gut says Florida and Maryland. I don?t know which order, but again, all that could change. Kenny?s priority is high school football."

Do you have any sense as to where he's leaning?

"It?s Kenny?s call. There's pros and cons with both. It's nice being close to home and having a chance to play for Maryland. He could become a household name for the University of Maryland. At the same time, Florida is big-time. There?s lots of glitz and glamour with playing in the SEC. He could end up checking out Ohio State, too."
