Brewster Working To Recruit Champlin Park's Maresh

Mike Max
Reporting

New University of Minnesota Gophers coach Tim Brewster is wasting no time starting recruiting. At the top of his list is junior Sam Maresh, of Champlin Park.

A little OT, but what is interesting is that as of right now, of the Big 10 schools only OSU (5), Michigan (2), Minnesota (5) and Wisconsin (1) have any commits so far for 2008. Michigan and OSU (and to a lesser extent PSU and Wisconsin) typically get earlier commits because certain kids jump at the opportunity to play for one of the powerhouses, and then the other schools fill in their spots with kids that are not going to be offered by the powerhouses. This year, though, Minnesota is tied with OSU for the highest number of commits in the Big 10 going into spring game season. Now there is an obvious difference between quantity and quality when it comes to recruiting (every year I could easily find 25 kids to commit to OSU on the day after the previous year's NLOID, but they might not best 25 possible) but Minnesota seems to at least locking up some kids from some traditional powers in Minnesota (Cretin Derham Hall, Eden Prarie, etc.). Maybe Coach Brewster will really be the guy to get Minnesota over the hump.

wow maybe Minnesota will be the Illinois this year in recruiting.

Minneapolis is certainly a more interesting city than Champaign. Then again, in-state recruits committed to the Gophers have a nasty habit of changing their minds if given the opportunity.

ROCHESTER, Minn. Prized Minnesota football recruit Sam Maresh underwent open heart surgery at the Mayo Clinic on Thursday.
Not enough information in the article to hazard a guess on if he will play football again, but I doubt it.

Glad to hear that they caught it. Aortic valve disease often leads to thickening of the heart's muscle and can cause sudden death. Too many kids have already died in two a days in the summer.
