'08 NC DE Quinton Coples (North Carolina Signee)

I LOVE tall defensive ends. Thats just me personally. Especially athletic ones. Why? They block passes easier, generally have more upside, usually have longer arms, and have more room to hold good weight as opposed to a 6'1 defensive end.

Sounds a little bit raw with a huge upside. Gotta love guys like that.

Wonder why we aren't pursuing as hard.. That last update from Rivals made it sound like we've cooled, but that he'd be very interested in hearing from staff and our recruits.. But then that newspaper article says we're going after him harder than everyone else..

Any of you guys know which is the case?? Is he still on the OSU rader?

We have not cooled...grades could be the only hold up but the staff is very high on Coples. As long as everything is okay as far as admissions goes, expect the staff to make a huge push for Coples. He or Keith Wells could very easily end up in this class.

Quinton Coples has not narrowed down his list of schools this summer, and as he prepares for his senior season this summer, he is not engaging the recruiting process nearly as hard as some other top prospects. Grades appear to be a slight concern with the big defensive end prospect, and academics will clearly be something to keep an eye on with Coples, even after he signs with a school in February.

He is our target. This looks like it will develope late.

Maybe old news but
Recruiting seems to be somewhat of an afterthought for Coples. (InsideCarolina.com)

He may be our surprise late in the process. I hope the Brew Crew is in contact.

He looks like a 260-270 type of player down the road...

People were ready to write off Worthington because they thought he was too tall to play DL. By all account he had one of the best spring/summers and is ready to be a force in the rotation this year. Coples is already 235 at 6-foot-7 and looks fairly skinny, which makes me think he could at least carry another 15-20 lbs. if not more.

I don't know if it's possible to do this by just eyeballing a kid but how much weight do you think he can put on while maintaining his speed and quickness?

I love the tall DL, especially at DE. As wad said, he could easily get in the 270 range with that frame and if he maintains athleticism, he could stay at DE, which is where I would like to see him. DT is more about leverage so it makes it a bit tougher for a taller guy but I see Coples at DE anyways, using his long arms to get past tackles and to the QB.
