Ohio’s Best Boys Basketball Players
Buckeye state boasts more talent than ever before

By Steve Helwagen

Over the course of the summer, Ohio’s best boys basketball players showed their stuff in various AAU and summer camp events from coast to coast.
These events helped Ohio’s best players earn reputations as the nation’s very best. The national rankings supplied by ScoutHoops.com are dotted with players from Ohio.

Five of the current seniors are in the national top 100, led by Dayton Dunbar’s Daequan Cook at No. 16. Even better is the Class of 2007, where seven Ohio prospects are listed among the top 50. That group is led by the North College Hill duo of O.J. Mayo and Bill Walker, ranked first and fourth nationally, respectively.

The sophomore class in Ohio also boasts two of the nation’s top 15 prospects, including Cincinnati Hughes’ Yancey Gates at No. 5.

“You would be hard pressed to go back and find three years consecutively where there is this type of talent in the state of Ohio,” said HoopScoopOnline.com Ohio editor Chris Johnson. “And there is not only talent but also some size. In that sophomore class, there are four or five really good players who are already 6-8 or taller.”

The Ohio talent quotient would be even better if Herb Pope, a 6-8 forward considered a top-10 national junior, had followed through with his stated plan to transfer to a school in Ohio. Instead, he began the new school year at his old school in Aliquippa, Pa.

With the summer camp and AAU season over, Johnson has reassessed his lists of Ohio’s top prospects and updated them. The following is a look at the top prospects in each class in Ohio high school boys basketball, as rated by Johnson.

Sophomores-To-Be (Class of 2008)

* 6. Kenny Frease, 6-10, center, Massillon Perry – Johnson on Frease: “He is a very skilled center. He probably weighs 235 and is still growing.”

STRONG START

Perry 6-foot-11 sophomore Kenny Frease opened eyes with a strong summer. He’s building on those performances by averaging 15.7 points and 13.0 rebounds in helping Perry to a 3-0 start.

Frease is using increased strength and more developed moves to power his way to points inside. But he also has improved his ball-handling and shooting. He has a reliable jump hook, and he’s hit two 3-pointers.

“He put 25 pounds of muscle on in the offseason,” Perry head coach Rob Toth said. “He worked very hard in the weight room, and he’s a gym rat. He takes pride in his ball-handling. He’s probably a lot further along than people think he is.”

Against St. Thomas Aquinas he made a nice dribble-drive along the right baseline before running into traffic and dishing to a teammate for a shot.
“He helps us a lot,” Perry senior Matt Kolic said after the Aquinas game. “He’s under a lot of pressure from the other teams with double and triple teams. But he’s handling it. ... He helps us get open.”

Jerry Meyer does an update on Frease. Xavier and Cleveland St. have offered, and tOSU is "on him hard". He is also hearing from scUM, Duke, North Carolina, Connecticut, Wake Forest, and Michigan St. He says that Xavier and tOSU are his favorites at this point.

Frease impresses

Perry center Kenny Frease continues to impress his coach with his improvement. The 6-foot-11 sophomore averages 18.5 points and 11.3 rebounds, while shooting nearly 59 percent. In two league tournament games last week, Frease had 49 points, 25 rebounds and shot 21-for-28 from the floor.

“He’s starting to put up those numbers regularly, low 20 points and double-figure rebounds with three or four blocks and four, five, six assists,” Perry coach Rob Toth said.

Frease went for 25 points in the Federal League semifinal game Saturday. Toth made sure to call his young big man the next day to congratulate him for the performance.

“I couldn’t remember if I told him after the GlenOak game how well he played,” Toth said. “ ... When you’re that big, you expect a lot of him. And he played a great game and kept his composure well in a tough game.
“His play all season has been solid. But he’s really stepped it up in the second half.”

Kenny has received offers from Xavier and Cleveland State. He is most interested in Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State, North Carolina, Wake Forest, and Xavier. He was in attendance for Ohio State's game against Illinois and is really impressed with the job Coach Matta is doing.

Kenny Frease has really impressed me this season. His overall game has got so much better than last season. His footwork for a 16 year is unreal, along with his post moves. I would like to see Kenny work on his weight training this off season, he needs to do drills to get quicker. His quickness will come as he grows into his body, which I have heard he is not done growing. I only look for great things for this kid to come, I really hope OSU offers. From the looks of things he will keep getting better, as he is ten times better than he was last year. Hopefully he will keep up his work ethic and keep improving.

Duke Rivals $

3/1

Found this article. It lists possible big-men targets for Duke in 2008. Says that Frease isn't very well known right now, but is have a great year. Mentions that with a big AAU season his stock could soar.

IMO, he is going to be behind Samardo Samuels, Luke Babbitt, and Drew Gordon on Duke's wish list (mainly because Duke will go after a 4 over a 5), so they shouldn't be much of a threat with Kenny.

I watched Kenny play at the King James Classic, and I was really impressed. He seems to have gotten a lot better since high school ball is over. He is running the floor, and shooting great (2 threes and 5-6 15-17 footers). I think you will keep seeing him move up in the rankings, because he is catching up to his body. Kenny is now becoming athletic.
