'08 OH DE/TE Greg Scruggs (Louisville signee)

Rivals $

12/6

From the MSU site...talks about his contact with the staffs at MSU and OSU and keeps in contact with Devier Posey. Officially visiting Tennessee this weekend, WF mid-week and NCSU next weekend. Seriously considering an official to MSU and possibly OSU.

Wells and Hale are higher on the board right now...it appears the staff will wait and see how things go with those guys before offering Scruggs...just my opinion.

Late start could still land Scruggs at UT

December 13, 2007

Football coach Steve Specht knew he had something special walking the halls of St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati. If only he could get the school's best athlete on the football field.

It seemed like Greg Scruggs, 6-foot-5 and 230, did everything else. He was a star basketball player and even played drums in the school marching band.

Even with such a diverse transcript, Scruggs needed something more - unless he wanted to be relegated to attending a Division II school on a partial basketball scholarship.

"I told him, 'Coach, I want to get college paid for to make things easier for my family,'" said Scruggs, who is being recruited by Tennessee.

So, it was done. Drumsticks were traded for barbells and football was priority No. 1.

"If God has blessed me with the ability to play at the next level, why not do it?" Scruggs said. "Why not help out my family?"

Scruggs has the ability. Playing at defensive end last season, Scruggs made 40 tackles, 51 quarterback pressures, nine sacks, two forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries.

With less than a full season of football under his belt, Scruggs received a dozen scholarship offers.

"Greg has potential to play on Sundays," Specht said, referring to the NFL.

Scruggs took his first official visit last weekend. The destination? Knoxville, where the Vols got the chance to make the first impression.

"The visit was great," Scruggs said. "I had a good time with all the players and the coaches."

Visits to North Carolina State, Wake Forest, Virginia and Michigan State are also scheduled.

I recall his comments earlier on about getting to go to college for free. UVA and Wake are in a different class of schools than the other schools Greg has listed. If the education really is important to Greg, UVA would be the no brainer.

Agreed...although the appeal of playing with friends Stephon Ball and Darius Ashley at Louisville might be too much to pass up. He also seemed to really enjoy his visit to Tennessee and I'm sure they had him with Ben Martin while he was down there...

St. X football update

St. Xavier senior DE Greg Scruggs has three more recruiting visits scheduled, according to St. X coach Steve Specht.

Scruggs plans to visit Michigan State, Louisville and Wake Forest, Specht said in an e-mail today.

Specht said he doesn't expect a decision until after the Wake Forest visit, which takes place during the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday weekend.

I agree. UVA is an elite school academically, and the way that Groh has the football program turning around lately, Greg could do very well as a Cavalier.

I think that they are a great fit for him as far as being a place where he could develop and succeed as a football player, and then obviously with as intelligent as a guy that he is, he would take full advantage of his oppurtunities in the classroom.

From SpartanMag...will make his final official to MSU this weekend. Talks about his contact with Coach Dantonio and says he will likely decide after this visit but not announce until NLOID.

Hey guys, obviously I am an MSU fan.

We are fading with Perry and I have always wanted Scruggs in this class.

Do you guys think he will go to Louisville due to his friends???

He is visiting this weekend and hopefully we can impress.

Most likely a redshirt candidate but the kid is a freak.

Factors in MSU's favor: (1) Dantonio; (2) Big Ten vs. Big East; (3) program on the rise vs. program on the decline; (4) last visit.

Factors in Louisville's favor: (1) closer to home; (2) friends (Ashley, Ball) already committed to Louisville; (3) Ron English; (4) great official visit.

Sounds to me like Louisville is the leader in the club house, but MSU still has a decent chance to make a good impression this weekend.
