Means the coaches asked him to walk-on...

Does he get to travel? Is he in line for one of the famous senior year schollies? I guess I just dont know what the difference is between him and a regular walk on. If I tried out for the team at walk on tryouts, and the coaches said "Would you like to be on the team" that wouldnt make me "preferred".

The way I understand a preferred walk on is that he will receive a schollie down the road in the next year or so.

Not necessarily, but he's in line for one his senior year if he plays well (doesn't need to actually break the 2-deep or anything, just play hard on scout teams, etc.).

Jon Thoma was a preferred walk on, and received a scholie for his Soph season and looks like for next year as well.

scholarships are technically offered on one year basis.

it means this coaches asked him, he didnt go to open tryouts or whatever the verbiage is.

it means that if he works hard he as a chance to be rewarded, plenty of walkons have played, plent have received scholarships, plenty have been broken in half

thoma also officially visited osu. isn't there some ncaa rule that says if a preferred walk-on officially visits, they have to go on scholarship if they play in a game?

lavoie never officially visited osu.

That is correct, and thus Lavoie isn't guaranteed a scholarship if he gets onto the field...however, JT has a history of putting preferred walk-on long snappers on scholarship by the time they are set to take on the starting role.
