Wauseon's Mealer chooses Michigan
By MATT MARKEY
BLADE SPORTS WRITER

"I was raised a Buckeye. I loved the Buckeyes - and I still do," Mealer said yesterday. "But I'll have to buy some different clothes now, since a lot of my stuff is all Ohio State."

"I think the picture changed a little when Ohio State got those other guys in, but Michigan had been very persistent all along and I think Elliott was very comfortable with them," Wauseon head coach Mark Emans said.

"The interest in him just snowballed after last season, and Michigan's been involved for a long time. It's just kind of funny that, until about 8:30 last night, he was a big Buckeyes fan."

I was kind of waiting on Ohio State to see if they were gonna offer, and I'm sure now some people thought this was just me getting back at them, but that just is not true," Mealer said. "The advice I got from a lot of people was that you would know when things felt right, and it's been that way with Michigan for a while now. This was never meant to be disrespectful at all towards Ohio State. I really like the coaches on the staff there too."

I really like the potential in this kid, and it sucks when it is just a matter of numbers.... Having said that you never know what the season holds and what schollies could open up etc...

Regardless, Meatchicken got a great player and great kid!

From the UM site...plenty of comments by Mealer's coach about what type of player he is. His coach says he is 100% solid to Michigan and will not be swayed no matter who continues to recruit him.

If our chances decrease with Jenkins I wonder if the staff would extend an offer to Mealer and if he'd consider us again. I know he grew up a huge Buckeye fan. In that scenario I would think Mealer would have to take another hard look at the Buckeyes.

Mealer was never really considered...Jenkins recruitment will likely not have any effect on Mealer.

I don't know how accurate that statement really is...When Mealer came to OSU for the spring game, Long had no verballed to FSU and everyone is town thought Jenkins was an OSU lock all the way. And the things that Tressel said kinda gave the impression that they wanted Mealer to wait a little longer...

Mealer is not considered anymore, because right after the spring game, he verballed to Michigan.

False...what you are insinuating from what JT said is just not accurate...I know for a fact the staff is not and never was very interested in Mealer. If they had been they would have asked him to hold off on a decision to see where some other chips fell. The staff made no such effort and were content to let him accept the offer UM made without pushing. If they missed on every OL target on their board Mealer would still not get an offer because he was never on the staff's board.
