HIGH SCHOOL BOYS BASKETBALL
Goins, Tarblooders rebound from misses

Friday, December 28, 2007 Mike Peticca

Plain Dealer Reporter
It's likely Rayshawn Goins will never again miss four foul shots in the last 19 seconds of a one-point game and yet emerge as a hero.
"I saw it was going to be short, so my instinct was to go after the ball," said Goins, who rebounded his own missed free throw and fed Nicholas Harney for the decisive basket in Glenville's 68-67 boys basketball win over Shaker Heights on Thursday night.
"I saw two defenders come at me. I dumped the ball backdoor to Nick, and he finished. It felt great, like we won the state championship."
Goins scored 25 points and grabbed 22 rebounds for the Tarblooders, who are 8-0 and ranked third in The Plain Dealer's seven-county poll. Host Shaker Heights, ranked seventh, fell to 5-3 with the nonleague loss before a standing-room crowd. The Raiders' 6-1 junior point guard, Anthony Wells, made 13 of 19 field-goal attempts, including five 3-point shots, to score 31.
Goins, a senior forward with a deft shooting touch, is averaging 29 points and 12 rebounds.

Cool, hadn't realized he has transferred to Glenville...
I think near the end of last season he had a philosophical or personal problem with the coach at Rhodes and I think that is one of the reasons he transferred. If you would have stayed at Rhodes, they would have had a very good team this year. If you are familiar with Cleveland schools, going from Rhodes to Glenville is going from the furthest NW quadrant to the furthest SE quadrant of a large city. That is one reason why I do not like open enrollment. With that being said, I have no idea where Goins is headed.

BOYS BASKETBALL#2 GLENVILLE 52CLEVELAND SOUTH 44
Holt able to leap South in a single quarter

Saturday, January 26, 2008 Mike Peticca

Plain Dealer Reporter
He didn't stroll into a phone booth and walk out wearing a cape, but Kendall Holt's imitation of Superman was good enough for Glenville's boys to maintain their winning ways.
Holt, a senior point guard, played only 30 seconds of the first three quarters because of a sore lower back. He scored 10 points in the game's final 4:30, though, to rally host Glenville to a 52-44 win over Cleveland South in a Senate Athletic League basketball game Friday.

The Tarblooders' 6-6 Rayshawn Goins, averaging 27 points, was held to 10 points by a South 2-3 zone defense designed to contain him. The 6-6 Beck (11 points) and center Devontae Payne, also 6-6, pestered Goins most of the game.
"Rayshawn is one of the better power forwards in Northeast Ohio," South coach Byron Bolden said. "We had to try to stop him to have a chance. We played very good defense."

Long time coming

Eagles' upset earns first SAL title since 1969

Plain Dealer Reporter
As the play quickly unfolded, William Marrow II did his best to treat the 22-foot jumper the way he would any late-game basketball shot.
"I knew I had to let it fly," said Marrow, a 6-2 sophomore guard. "That's my job. Just follow through."
Moments after the 3-point shot swished through the net at South High on Friday night, giving John F. Kennedy a 59-57 win over Glenville in the Senate Athletic League boys title game, Marrow began to understand the magnitude of what had happened.

Glenville, which led, 39-28, early in the third quarter, was led by 6-6 senior forward Rayshawn Goins (15 points),
