'08 OH TE/DE Kevin Koger (Michigan signee)

Anyone who has read the Rivals article on Koger's commitment can see what a classy kid he is...he grew up a Michigan fan and dreamed about playing there all his life. JT and the staff did a great job (once again) of recruiting him and that is reflected in the things Kevin has to say about OSU and the staff. However (once again) OSU has finished a close second to a kid with family ties to another school (Rudolph, Zordich, McCarthy and now Koger)...and this time OSU's use of the position (in this case TE) also hurt. Best of luck to Kevin.

Little bump in the recruiting road.
We will have a monster year!

Exactly, these bumps are being managed by 17 and 18 olds making grand decisions that many don't have to make at that young age. Family ties are a factor, religious beliefs will have an influence, just as much as child loyalties to teams that "dad" followed or maybe even played for as a kid the same age. I grew up loving the Indians, the Browns, and the Buckeyes because my dad loved them. I still follow these teams (and now the Cavs too) but I also loved the Fins when Zonka, Kick and Warfield played (with TGII my interest has returned). These loyalties are deep rooted and hard to break. We came close with Kevin, but
We will have a monster year!
with or without him.

More Comfortable + More Touches = More Happy

This is what I took out of this Toledo Blade Story this morning. Kevin was more confortable with Michigan, he felt he would get more touches than at tOSU, and he was happier. It sounds as though he did think this through based upon the impressions all left with him.

The last line about winning a National Championship was hopeful IMO but I do believe Kevin will be the best player he can be for them.

Can't use the position if you don't have the horses. We can't throw to subpar tight ends. Rory Nicol, Jake Ballard are solid, but not field stretchers. Any tight ends with that kind of ability either don't come to OSU or end up in jail or Mississippi Valley State or both (Louis Irizarry/Marcel Frost).

Q: Can you name the last "field-stretching" TE at Michigan?

A: Exactly, there are none. They are just utilized more in the passing game.

Q: Can you name 7 field-stretching TE in the NFL?

A: Winslow, Gonzalez, and Gates are field-stretchers while Heap, Shockey, Crumpler, H. Miller, and Witten are just good receiving TE's

Point is, the "field-stretching TE" is not used as much as you think.

Fact is OSU hasn't really used the TE a whole lot for receiving in awhile.
And to call our TE's "subpar" is ridiculous. 2 of them would start pretty much anywhere in the big ten.

Nothing wrong with the fact we don't use the TE a whole lot, but its obvious that Koger felt he would get more touches, with or without Moore there. Maybe JT is looking to start using the TE more, hence the recruitment of several guys like Koger and Gronkowski last year.

I'm glad the kid was able to make a decision that he feels is best for him.

Good luck to him!!

Carson Butler could have been considered a field stretcher, that doesn't mean he is going to beat someone on a fly route, but he can/could have change/d the complexion of a game. Same w/ Massaquoi...

My point was we've recruited great athletes capable of being field stretching TEs, but they have all seemed to like brushes with the law/Tressel's dog house. Ballard and Nicol are solid, as I said. We have had years with subpar TEs...as recently as 2005.

Is it me or does it feel like Ben Hartsock was just here? lol

Good point OWU!! There was a 2-3 year period where it seemed like we were plugging and filling the TE position.....WE found Frost and then he had to leave the program.

I think Ballard is going to be 1st Team All Big Ten before he leaves

Good call. Hartsock was a great leader...on and off the field. We haven't had an impact player like him at that spot since then.

I can remember in 2004, first game of the year, (Cincinnati I think) and Zwick hit Hamby for two long passes and remember thinking and hearing how great it was to have another stud TE....

whoops...

This sucks but I agree with Milli...I still can't see the draw to play up north but I have exrtemely scarlet and gray glasses on when I say that. Also, it is a bit disappointing that we loose two top TE prospects in the state to ND and scUM. I really think that until we have a TE that proves to be a good pass catcher and used more than a 6th OL, we just aren't going to land any big TE prospects that are primarily pass catchers (assuming Stoney stays at WR or a mix). Hopefully Stoney can be used as a hybrid type TE and change that perception because as of right now I can't say that I really blame Rudolph or Koger. The staff made it interesting but close only counts in horseshoes and hand-grenades.

It's interesting that koger felt like he was going to play faster at UM although they have more TE's on scholarship. It makes me feel like we're using our schollies more wisely than UM who have a few TE's they have no use for.

We havn't thrown to the TE's with Troy because he is six feet tall. That's why he fell so far in the draft-he literally can't throw over linemen to the TE's in the middle. On top of that he had the best WR core in the nation. This year we'll use the TE more. If future recruits are like Koger and they want a system that uses the TE, they probably won't have that concern after this season.

Hopefully we'll land a TE this year though so Stoneburner can shine at WR with that big frame.

What I did on my summer vacation: Kevin Koger
Whitmer, senior

BLADE STAFF

WHAT HE DID: The 6-foot-4, 230-pound Koger ? a tight end and All-Ohio defensive end as a junior in 2006 ? kicked off his summer in early June with the first of six 7-on-7 passing tournaments. He attended the Ohio State University camp on June 22, and then the University of Michigan camp eight days later. He took part in five instructional camps at Whitmer, lifted weights every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8:30 to 10 a.m., followed by running for conditioning. He participated in open gym for basketball every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from noon to 2 p.m. On July 10 he made an official visit to Ohio State. On July 12 he made his official visit to Michigan.
