?[Long is] doing what we?re asking him to do,? said STAB coach John Blake. ?He?s doing very well at finding his receivers, setting his feet, and throwing good balls. If he can continue to do that, we?re going to be OK.?
The Saints (2-0, 0-0 ODFC) outgained North Cross by 230 yards on the ground thanks to a mammoth size advantage on both sides of the line.
Junior Jack Thomasson racked up 104 yards on the ground after stud tailback Colin Pehanick went down with a mild ankle sprain midway through the second quarter. Pehanick joined teammates Hunter Thompson and Brian Linthicum on the sideline. The Clemson-bound Linthicum also fell victim to an ankle sprain, while Thompson injured his shoulder. The severity of the injuries is unknown, but all three hope to play next week.
Despite the bumps and bruises, Blake was encouraged with what he saw on the field - regardless of the quality of the opponent.
?We saw good things on both sides of the ball,? said the 10-year head man. ?It?s hard to simulate what they do. I think it was good for us to see them because we?re going to see some of that stuff next week against Trinity.?
Ryan Caldwell reeled in two catches for 98 yards and two touchdowns, while teammate Steve Brown hit paydirt twice as well, including a 15-yard scamper on fourth-and-inches.
The Saints accumulated 16 first downs compared to just five for the Raiders, who fell to Covenant last week, 34-24.
Few starters saw second-half action for STAB, which allowed North Cross over its side of the 50 just three times all night.
?Last week, we didn?t get a chance to play the second group a whole lot as a unit,? said Blake. ?We got a chance to get those younger guys in there tonight and they played well.?
While little brother Howie claimed the glory Friday night, Kyle Long has his sights set on bigger things.
?Nothing short of a state championship will make us happy,? said the 6-foot-7, 280-pound lineman. ?Since the day we lost the state championship [last year], we?ve been in the weight room, working together as a team. From Day 1, we?ve come a long way. Our team has come together and we?re ready to show everyone what we can do.?
While coach Blake might not want his boys thinking state championship quite yet, his team?s bravado has led to a 97-7 discrepancy on the scoreboard after just two games - and there are no signs of slowing down.

HOWDY HOWIE Pro Football Hall of Fame defensive lineman Howie Long will be on the Ohio State campus today. Long is in town to meet Tressel, watch OSU?s practice and tour the campus. His son, Kyle Long, is a 6-foot-7, 275-pound offensive lineman at St. Anne?s Belfield in Virginia. He is one of the country?s top recruits and is considering Ohio State. Kyle Long will attend the Penn State game along with several other blue-chip recruits.

From most of the info i have read about Kyle, it seems like Virginia is our main competition...it definitely cant hurt that Virginia is not a very good football team and Groh's seat has to be getting warmer by the day or should i say loss.

Your correct...and I would much rather be in OSU's shoes than Virginia's to say the very least.

Virginia Rivals - 09/20/06

Kyle has four offers - Ohio State, Virginia, Kansas State, and Louisville. He will visit Ohio State this weekend, and plans on seeing several other schools this year.

In the article, Kyle admitted to being an ardent Virginia fan, and stated that distance will be a factor (family ties). My take: However, when discussing Virginia, Kyle's "tone" seemed somewhat sentimental, if you know what I mean. FWIW.

OSU HAS GOOD SHOT AT LONG

Kyle Long, a 6-foot-7, 280-pound offensive lineman from St. Anne?s Belfield High School in Virginia, is seriously considering Ohio State. Long is just a junior, but he is one of the top-ranked offensive linemen in the Class of 2008.

The son of Hall of Famer Howie Long already is enamored with Buckeye Head Coach Jim Tressel. Long visited Ohio State over the Easter holiday. He took a tour of campus with Tressel in a golf cart.

?He?s like the governor of Ohio,? Long said. ?He was incredible. You step on campus there and meet Coach Tressel and Coach (Jim) Bollman. They?re responsible for the success Ohio State has had. You can feel football when you walk on the campus. ... It just turns you on.?

Long watched the OSU-Texas game on TV. He rooted for the Buckeyes. Games like that are a reason Long wouldn?t mind going to OSU.

?They have all those big-named Big Ten teams, and then they play a Texas and a USC. National respect is on the line, and I?m a big respect guy,? Long said. ?Ohio State has gained the respect of everybody in the country.?

His top schools, in no order, are OSU, Notre Dame, Virginia (where his brother plays), Kansas State and Louisville.

Football may not be Long?s only avenue. He was an all-state baseball player on St. Anne?s state championship baseball team. He played outfield and pitcher. And yes, there is a chance he could be drafted after his senior season.

?I?m in high school, and I don?t like one more than the other,? he said. ?I figure if I?m having success in both sports at the end of my senior year, I will have a tough decision to make. I?m going to take my visits for football, play baseball and see what happens.?

FAMOUS DAD

Long said his father will not make the decision where he goes to college. ?He wants me to go to a place where I feel comfortable,? Long said. ?And he wants to feel comfortable sending me away.?

That is why Howie Long flew to Columbus last week. He watched practice, toured the campus and met Tressel in person. He said on a radio interview two years ago that Jim Tressel is the kind of guy who ?could coach his son.?

FAMOUS GROUNDS CREW

St. Anne?s used to have the world?s most famous grounds crew. Howie Long and acclaimed author John Grisham used to paint the lines on the field. ?We just got turf, so they?ve been demoted to the stands,? Kyle Long said.
