Jones gets notice with display

Sunday, April 27, 2008 Mike Peticca
Plain Dealer Reporter

If Garfield Heights junior Carl "Tay" Jones wasn't already on the radar screen of Ohio State University basketball coach Thad Matta, he may be now.
Matta was in Memorial Hall, the former home of University of Akron basketball, on Saturday. He was among personnel representing nearly 200 college basketball programs. They're scouting prospects at any of 48 area gymnasiums during the third annual Applebee's King (LeBron) James Shooting Stars Classic.
Matta, West Virginia coach Bob Huggins and others were treated to a 31-point effort by Jones, a 5-11 guard. Jones, canning two 3-point shots and displaying a variety of moves to the basket, scored 21 of his points during a seven-minute span of the second half, then scored six more points in overtime as his Ohio Basketball Club edged The Family (Detroit), 59-55, in a 17-and-under game.

Jones, the lone junior among five players named to The Plain Dealer's seven-county 2007-08 all-star team, has fielded scholarship offers from more than 15 Division I programs. Ohio State has not made an offer, and for now, Jones is giving serious consideration to offers from Iowa and St. Joseph (Pa.).

Gonna need some weight on that frame to really be able to compete at a high level...
Yeha, well the kid is a Sophomore in HS... adding weight happens when your body matures enough to gain weight. It'll happen, both naturally and through har work in the weight room.

He is a junior about to be a senior...

And yes I know that he will obviously add weight, but the question is how much weight will his frame hold...He doesn't have the ideal frame to hold the weight for college bball at a big time school...

Is that to say he couldn't play here??? Of course not, I am just pointing out that it is a question mark...

With Golden decommitting, do the Buck's now show interest in Jones? I know he was not listed among the recruiting possibilities in the Dispatch this morning.

I don't think so...We will have 3 guys on our roster in 09...They are recruiting Johnson in 10' and with him having us in the lead...You would think they would just wait till then...

In 09 we have Crater and 2 seniors with Simmons and Hill...
In 2010 we would have Crater and Johnson hopefully...

Coaches see just 1 Ohioan

Monday, July 07, 2008 Elton Alexander

Plain Dealer Reporter
Many games were available for lots of college coaches to see the premiere talent Sunday during the second of four days at the LeBron James Skills Academy at the University of Akron.
However, only one player was from Ohio on the list of 80 players invited to participate in the elite camp. Garfield Heights senior Carl Jones, a slight 5-10 guard with quickness and scoring ability, was the only Ohioan to make the cut.
"That's big for him," said Sonny Johnson, his high school coach.
