'09 OH QB Devontae Payne (Eastern Michigan Signee; Transfer to Findlay)

Devonetae plays for my old HS, Cleveland South. He's been coached by a former teamate of mine, great guy, Jarvis Gibson. From the film I've seen, he's actually pretty mobile, more like a Jermarcus Russell, as has been mentioned. He has several rushing TD's this season.

As far as the Cleveland Senate League goes, it is improving, because of Glenville. South, under Gibson, has put itself in pretty close to second in the league. They made the state playoffs last year for the first time in school history, so they are getting a look at stiffer compition.

This guy is definitely a project, but with TP, it will be hard for tOSU to recruit any top QB's at least until next year, and maybe for the next two years. We'll need someone to backup TP and Bauserman, and Devontae may just be a good fit. He would RS next year, compete for 2nd string in '10, and have the opportunity to compete for the starting job in '11, at that point it's up to him and how hard he works. I think he has the physical side to be pretty good. From his side, he will have to decide weather he wants playing time right off at a MAC school or is he willing to wait his turn with a shot at the big boys.

Great story either way.

Semantics I know, but mobile in this case is not referring to being a dual-threat QB. He is playing behind a struggling OL and has to improvise often but there should not be any confusion that he is not a scrambling threat. He is big and strong in the pocket and has some feel for pressure, but he is not someone a team gameplans to contain on the ground.

Sorry if there is already a thread on this kid. I thought it was time to start talking about Payne as a possible recruit. Big, but raw kid with a big arm.
