Still, i cannot help but see Donte Whitner whenever I see Derrell. I would assume he receives an offer early on. We could a very fast start to '09 withi Whiting, Klein, Simon and Mason... who should all eventually end up being Top 100 players by the end of the recruiting season.

They won't end on the top 100 list becuase they should be early verbals. Early verbals don't sell subscriptions, so I expect them to be on it at some point, but off of it at the end.

I gotta say, I dont see the donte whitner in him. Donte was a 5'11 highschool cornerback who was real compact and could hit. Derrell is a 6'1 lankier kid who could grow into a linebacker, and at this point in time, doesnt have the same speed that Donte had in highschool.

Gotta disagree on them not being on the Top 100 at the end. I think all of them will be. They are too good not to be.

The Irish solidified their playoff position by defeating Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary.

OhioVarsity.com - Mason scores three TD's in Ursuline win

Special to OhioVarsity.com

As the rain fell Friday night at Green Street Stadium in Akron it was easy to get things confused between Akron St. Vincent St. Mary (8-2) and Youngstown Ursuline (8-2). Both schools carry the nickname "The Fighting Irish," both schools proudly wear green and gold and both schools suffered a loss to nationally ranked Youngstown Cardinal Mooney. So it should be no surprise that in Ursuline's thrilling 33-30 overtime victory much of the success was created by confusion.

With just three minutes and eight seconds left ? and Ursuline trailing by six ? McQueen began to use his big-play ability to engineer an 86-yard, 14-play touchdown drive. The quarterback completed passes of 11 and six yards and ran for 33 yards before workhorse running back Darrell Mason punched it in from two yards out. Mason, a junior, finished the game with just 55 yards rushing, but had three touchdowns.

Junior highlights.

My take: Certainly looks the part...good size and speed for a junior. Runs like Peterson/McFadden...very tall, which used to be considered a flaw but now more and more coaches are looking for big kids who can run and technique is not as important. Keep his feet underneath him well...shortens his steps into contact to maintain balance. Gets his pads going north and south and attack the line of scrimmage. Based on these clips and the one time I have seen him in person I would say he is OSU caliber.

AUSTINTOWN - Ursuline High football coach Dan Reardon isn?t surprised that his Irish found the inspiration to pummel South Range, 31-7, in Friday?s Division V Region 17 playoff.

Reardon, Ursuline?s fourth-year coach, said his players had chips on their shoulders after reading, hearing and seeing their team disrespected by the Mahoning Valley media in the days leading up to the Week 13 contest.

?All week, our kids have been hearing about how much heart South Range has and how much of a work ethic they have and how well-coached they are,? Reardon said. ?And they are.
