If he is going to wait until the Spring:( signing date, I think that is really going to put the coaching staff in a bind because we will really need a big guy for 2009 if BJ leaves early. I know we will still have Dallas but we will need another big guy to supplement him even if we do get the transfer from Iowa State.

McGuinness' Orton names favorites

By Brandon Chatmon
Staff Writer
After saying he was wide open throughout the recruiting process, Bishop McGuinness forward Daniel Orton named seven schools as his favorites.

Kentucky leads for Orton's services, followed by UConn, Ohio State, Kansas, UCLA, Texas, and Oklahoma.
"Kentucky has great fans,? Orton said. "And I experienced that (when he went to Kentucky's elite camp a few weeks ago).?
Orton said his relationship with Billy Gillispie also played a key factor in the Wildcats sitting atop his list of favorites. The 6-10, 260-pounder, who is ranked No. 9 overall in the Rivals Top 150, said he will definitely take official visits to UConn, Kentucky and Ohio State. Oklahoma remains a strong contender thanks to the talent the Sooners have brought in behind the recruiting prowess of Jeff Capel. Orton will keep close tabs on the fan support the Sooners have with Willie Warren and Blake Griffin leading OU in 2008-09.

  • I talked to Wall after I spoke with Oklahoma big man Daniel Orton, another top UK target from the '09 class. As Wall was getting up from the table, Orton came over and said "did you tell them we're going to Kentucky?" Both players smiled and Orton said, "let's just do a press conference here." He laughed and Wall didn't say a word.
  • Speaking of Orton, he said he's still only 85-90 percent healthy because of his ankle and knee injuries and noted that right now "all the schools are pretty equal." He did say that UCLA, Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Connecticut and Kentucky were high atop his list "not in any particular order."

Mom's health scare affects recruit's play at camp

By Jerry Tipton

Daniel Orton has Kentucky and six other schools on his list.

? Jerry Tipton's UK basketball blog

AKRON ? It isn't often that a recruiting analyst admits he underrated a prospect and apologizes. It happened at the Nike-sponsored LeBron James Skills Academy.
The subject of the devaluation and apology was Daniel Orton, a 6-foot-9, 258-pound power forward from Oklahoma City. His sin? He wasn't dominating. He was simply playing well.
Then he explained the mental and physical problems he's carrying onto the court these days. An unsolicited apology followed from an unidentified analyst in a group interview.
Orton's mother almost died recently after being rushed to the hospital. Orton was on the summer basketball circuit and couldn't be near his mother.
Plus, he was hobbled by ankle and knee problems while competing against players who knew they could enhance their reputations by outplaying a highly regarded prospect.
I'm doing a terrible job keeping my consistency out there,? Orton said. ?I'm not playing that well.?

The colleges he mentioned were UCLA, Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Kentucky and Connecticut. ?In no certain order,? he said. ?Everybody's pretty equal.?
