11. JAMES GAYLE, 6-4, 220, DE, BETHEL (HAMPTON). Virginia and Virginia Tech both have offers out to Gayle, so how could you call him a sleeper? (That was my first impulse) His father and his uncle played at Ohio State, his uncle than had an 11-year NFL career, so how long before the Buckeyes jump in? N.C. State and Syracuse are among the seven I-A schools that have offered him.

BETHEL'S GAYLE A COMMODITY

If his recent interest is any indication, Bethel High defensive end James Gayle may be the area's next big thing on the football recruiting scene.

Gayle, who stands 6-foot-4 and weighs 220 pounds, has offers from Purdue, Syracuse, North Carolina State, Central Florida, Marshall, Richmond, East Carolina, Hampton and Liberty. Virginia Tech offered Gayle when he attended its camp on July 12.

There, he cleared the 40-yard dash in 4.5 seconds.

Gayle's father, Jimmy, played at Ohio State along with his brother Shaun, who went on to play with the Chicago Bears. Jimmy said that the plan is to take a trip to Ohio State ... ahem, THE Ohio State soon.

But right now, Gayle is leaning toward Tech.

Hokies nab 9th recruit
By Doug Doughty | The Roanoke Times

James Gayle, a 6-foot-4, 220-pound defensive end from Bethel High School in Hampton, has become the ninth football prospect to commit to Virginia Tech for 2009.

Gayle was timed in 4.5 seconds for 40 yards at a recent one-day Tech camp and received a scholarship offer on the spot. He said he had offers from nine Division I-A or I-AA programs, including North Carolina State, Syracuse, Purdue and ECU.

Gayle also attracted the interest of Virginia during a one-day camp there and was supposed to return to Charlottesville before ending his recruiting.

?What sold me was the one-day camp at Tech,? Gayle said. ?It felt like a good fit.?

Gayle?s father and uncle played at Ohio State. His father, Jimmy, finished his Buckeyes? career as one of the top 10 rushers in school history. Uncle Shaun Gayle, a defensive back, played on the Chicago Bears? 1985 Super Bowl-winning team.

Tech's James Gayle was a disruptive force against Marshall.

BLACKSBURG --

The first time James Gayle crossed paths with Tajh Boyd was in 2007, Gayle's junior year at Bethel High in Hampton. Gayle was starting for the first time, in a cross-city game against Phoebus and its quarterback, Boyd.

"I sacked him in that game," Gayle said. "He knew I was out there. He actually spoke to me a couple weeks later at a basketball game about it."

Gayle and Boyd now are both third-year sophomores on their college teams ? Gayle as a defensive end at Virginia Tech, Boyd as Clemson's new starting quarterback. Gayle and Boyd still keep in touch, and Saturday night, they will meet on the field again when 13th-ranked Clemson visits No. 11 Tech.

"This is probably my biggest game of my life thus far," Gayle said. "I just can't wait."
