'09 VA QB Kevin Newsome (Penn State signee - transfer to Temple)

This has an impact on PSU too. They have been really wanting to land Forcier and with Newsome no longer a scUM verbal, they have to be the favorites now. PSU really needs a top QB in this class so you gotta think if Forcier does turn blue, they have to go after Newsome hard. For the record, I think he ends up a Hokie (Newsome that is).

The same buddy who feeds me all of my VT info (whether I want it or not ) is hearing that PSU is not a real player here. Apparently Newsome is 50/50 between VT and UNC... as always with info like this, TIFWIW

Newsome's probably done with Michigan. Oh well. What I think will happen is Newsome will look at VT, PSU, (Never heard UNC but you said them so I'll add them) UNC, and Florida (TJB on GBW said this).

Only thing I don't get is VT. He'd would have Tyrod Taylor in front of him, then that 2010 really amazing QB (Sims?) behind him. At Penn State he'd probably start yeah, but they haven't developed anybody (best QB under Jay Paterno was 45th in efficiency). I'm not trying to justify him back to Michigan, I think he's gone forever.. I'm just trying to figure out where he would go. What do you all think?

I've read that he really likes the coaching staff at UNC. PSU would provide the easiest path to playing time, but as you stated, their QB track record is pretty poor. Michael Robinson is probably the best QB they've had in the past decade and he's a backup RB in the NFL now. His family seems to want him to got to VT and that would be my bet right now.

I agree with many and think VaTech is the main player here. While UM fans can spin it any way they want, the kid was flat out lied to. RR said "Your our guy", and then came the commitment of Beaver, also maybe Forcier. No matter if the kid is afraid of competition or not, the kid apprently just dosen't like being lied to.

It was pretty common knowledge from the beginning of this class that Rodriguez was taking two QBs to fit his offense. If Newsome decommitted because he thought they were only taking one, what took him so long to decommit?

Hey now...don't let logic or reality get in the way of us hating RR.

You raise a good question...what did take him so long to decommit?

ESPN - Pep Rally: Newsome exploring his options - Insider

Yes, it's ESPN, but catch this little snippet.

"Kevin Newsome Sr. told us Wednesday his son was informed by Rodriguez in the very beginning that Michigan was taking two quarterbacks in 2009. With just one set of keys to the Wolverines' new spread offense, it was inevitable either Newsome or Beaver would be employed elsewhere with their striking athleticism. It now appears Newsome is no longer taking any chances or is at least exploring his other options. He announced Tuesday he was decommitting from the Wolverines. "

It was common knowledge (Beaver and Newsome) and one would assume Newsome was aware of that. Perhaps it was rr's continued recruitment of Forcier that swayed him.

I don't necessarily buy into that, I think he just commited a little too early and is bowing to the pressure of his family to take a harder look at other schools.

In my opinion, we had a bit of a catch-22 on our hands. Rodriguez was recruiting QBs because Newsome's commitment wasn't solid, and Newsome's commitment wasn't solid because Rodriguez was recruiting QBs? I don't know for sure. Either way, I highly doubt he's a part of this class

Wow...I reverse field on this one, and say maybe he was afraid of competition. Thing is about QB there is usually just one who plays most of the snaps. Unlike RB or WR.
I don't buy that at all. He's a blue chip recruit and an athlete has to have confidence in himself. If VT is the real favorite right now, he'll have competition there as well. UNC also. His clearest path to playing time is PSU, but they don't seem to be a real player at this point.

Hey now I never said I flat out thought he was afraid of comp. Newsome Sr. comments just swayed me to believe it wasn't all shady RR. Fact is I still think it was RR recuiting the other QB's, namely Forcier.

Also Newsome wouldn't face much comp at VaTech. Tyrod Taylor would be a junior his freshman season. He would only have to wait two years, maybe one. Nothing at all like having to beat out two other freshman(if Forcier does pick UM) at your position. PSU on the other hand he would have a great chance to play early. But Penn State is were talented QBs go to die.

You made a suggestion, and he offered up a rebuttal. Don't worry, we weren't looking to your post for the absolute truth behind this story :)

Rich sold newsome on being the face of um's new offense, and was not selling the current 08 qbs short. They are a stopgap at best, and possibly much worse.

He told newsome he was his hit, and then went out and secured beaver's commitment soon after, and chased a number of others... Some combo guys ATH/qb/db, some polished passers like Tate (which was a terribly kept secret).

It seems perfectly reasonable to feel misled (whether that's Kevin or dad), and also smart of rr to not put all of his apples in Kevin's cart, especially with such heavy local and family pressure to not go to UM.

The only way Taylor is gone in 2 yrs is if he pulls a Marcus Vick. There was serious talk about redshirting tyrod a few months back, I have no idea if that's out to rest or not. Either way newsome will sit for 2 years at either unc or vt. Clearly it's about more than instant pt.

Yeah Taylor is a long ways away from being NFL ready. But you know how some of these kids are, guys who leave early and aren't ready. I was just throwing out that possiabilty.

At UNC Newsome could sit for a while. The stater Yates was only a RS Freshman last year. Then they redshirted Mike Palies(sp?), a four star pocket passer from New York. So he could be wearing the headset for a while.

I agree, PT isn't the biggest factor. I think he looking for what most recuits are looking for, a place that feels like home.
