'10 OH OL Matt James (Notre Dame Signee - RIP)

This is a terrible situation for the family, regardless of alcohol abuse or not.

A young man lost his life, and as others more eloquent than I have stated, this is an ultimate tragedy.

Thoughts and prayers to the family, what a difficult thing to suffer.

I think that to the extent the discussion has taken place so far, this thread is as good as any. I wouldn't want to see a separate thread where people felt that good manners don't matter as much.

I'm glad to see that people have tempered their comments so far on that aspect of the situation.

I hope this gives people an opportunity to reflect on the way the decision-making of recruits and their parents are discussed in other threads. This past recruiting season alone I've seen guys like Henderson and Anderson (and/or their parents) spoken of rather harshly for their "questionable" decision-making, and right or wrong none of them did anything that led to a tragic and untimely death. I think folks are showing here that they can be moderate in their comments, and I hope that there can be a carry-over. In the end, a lot of the decisions that we treat people harshly for around here are quite trivial compared to something like this.

I agree. BP'ers have made appropriate posts. One look at some of what has been said made me very pleased to be a part of this fan community.

Good kids make mistakes. Sadly, some of those mistakes end in tragedy.

I hope Matt's family can mourn the loss of their good kid, and remember the bright lights he provided them in his too-short life.

Tough Easter for the James family.

My thoughts exactly. Matt will leave his memories with all those who knew him and they will likely remember him for the joy he brought to those around him. If you read Coach Specht's comments, I think it is pretty evident Matt's legacy will not be remembered for this mistake that cost him his life, but for the positive impact he had on those around him.

I'm not sure what I'd do if I lost one of my children. I'm just taken back by the devastation the James' family must be dealing with now. There's nothing more important than your children and my heart goes out to his entire family but most especially his mother and father. May peace and joy somehow find their way back into your lives after this most tragic of losses.

Notre Dame recruit Matt James remembered by St. Xavier community | cincinnati.com | Cincinnati.Com

By Mike Dyer - [email protected] - April 8, 2010

CINCINNATI - The friends and family members of Matt James will remember a young man this weekend who liked participating in family snowball fights and did his best to blend in with other children at family Christmas gatherings despite being 6-feet-7 and 290 pounds.

A public visitation for the St. Xavier senior, who died April 2 in Panama City, Fla., will be held at St. Xavier High School from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday. The funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Francis Xavier Church, downtown.

James' size made him hard to miss, but members of the St. X community this week said the Notre Dame football recruit never needed to be the center of attention.

"My (7-year-old) son and nephews talked about playing with him all the time," said Craig James, the cousin of Matt?s father, Jerry James. "He was such a lovable jungle gym."
