'10 OH OL Matt James (Notre Dame Signee - RIP)

Or it could mean that the pipeline of Cincinnati athletes at parochial schools is still strong. St Xavier(along with Elder, Moeller and LaSalle) almost always sends high caliber players to ND.

The "that" that he was referring to is the thought that OSU may have backed off, not the fact that he may be favoring ND.

Can you guys elaborate a little more about this situation? That is if you are able to. Thanks.

No clue on why they backed off...certainly not talent. Speculation of standing with other targets, but nothing concrete.

We've been down that 'pass/slowplay on a legit prospect while waiting on a "bigger fish" road' before...hopefully this one works out better than the past few.

You Guys is obviously a request for the BPRT elaboration but DL does respond to some questions on his blogsite:
Matt James - Duane Long's OSU Buckeyes Football Report

"Do you think they backed off because it was made clear that James was all ND? "

DL's reply to this and other various questions:
"That would go against everything I was hearing about James. I was telling a good friend who knows line play like no other just in the last few days that I had been scrutinizing lineman closer recently and I was not as high on James but I am talking from a 5 to a 4.5, not from a 5 to not Buckeye caliber. . ."
"I could get right with a Donnal offer. That would be the right tonic for what ails me. That is the other side of this. The stock of Norwell, Hurst and Donnal went up when I broke them down, and Donnal is the left tackle of the bunch. Not as high on Schofner either. . .
I am going to have to have to go back to my original opinion of James. After I posted on the blog that I was not as high on James, someone IM'ed me and asked if I was using Mark Porters video. I said yes. The poster asked if I noticed that Marks was sophmore tape. I had not. I was pointed in the direction of the Rivals junior film and the Youtube film that I had forgotten about. I am back to seeing a five-star player for James. He is coming off the ball better than he was in the sophmore tape and he is showing more drive at the point of attack. . .
"Not worried if we can get Henderson, Hurst or Donnal.
Just give me one and I will shut up."

He has an OSU offer so if he really wanted to be a Buckeye he would of committed.

Amen! We continually
neglect local kids like
Cadogan and James.
This staff will never
learn. :nerd: :nerd:

I've had a feeling for a little while that this may be like that Pat Muldoon situation from St. X last year... Had an early offer, but once the staff started evaluating other players and offers they moved on... I think (not know) that that may have happened with Matt too...

Whatever happened to Chauncey Incarnato? Those were the days.

I think he may have transferred out of.....Notre Dame I think. Or somewhere.

Anyways, other than Duane, has anybody else expressed some reservations on James after evaluating his film? I'm just trying to figure out what has the staff "backing off".

I'm sure the staff knows what they are doing with James, but I do hope they bring in at least 4-5 lineman in with this next class regardless of the James situation. I haven't exactly been a big fan of the limited number of scholarship O-linemen over the years. It would really be nice to redshirt a bunch of linemen rather than waste the redshirt and play kids out of necessity. O-linemen just take longer to develope and an extra year can only help.

Duane retracted that statement. He was watching his soph highlights on scoutingohio. Once he watched his junior tape, he bumped him back up to being an elite prospect.

I didn't state that correctly. I have been on Duanes Blog several times and did see his statement retraction.

Let me try again.

Are there any recruiting evaluators not named Duane that have expressed reservations about James that are perhaps shared by the coaching staff.

I hate the idea of OSU backing off of Matt James. Who cares if he favors ND? Recruit him more intensely. And yet, we did not back off from Steve Rehring, Kyle Mitchum, and Connor Smith. Unbelievable. Sure, I'll trust the coaching staff's ability to judge O-Line talent, but then I keep thinking about the last three names I just mentioned.......
